Rakesh Upadhyay (born June 1, 1973) is a prominent Indian Bhojpuri folk singer, known for his contributions to Bhojpuri folk music and devotional bhajans.[1] He is a member of the Sant Kabir Academy and has gained recognition both in India and internationally for his performances and dedication to preserving traditional folk music.[2]

Early Life and Education

Rakesh Upadhyay was born in the village of Karaundi, located in Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is the son of Late K.P. Upadhyay and Late Bacchi Devi. Upadhyay completed his early education at Saraswati Shishu Mandir and Gyan Prakash Inter College in Bhalluani. He pursued further studies in agriculture science at Seva Samiti Banwari Lal Inter College in Deoria, followed by undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Ancient History from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University.

Musical Career

Rakesh Upadhyay's musical journey began in his village, where he performed devotional songs, bhajans, and recitations from the Ramcharitmanas.[3] His passion for traditional songs was nurtured by his mother. Upadhyay initially gained prominence as a grade "A" artist on All India Radio Gorakhpur.[4]

Upadhyay was later empanelled by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR)[5] and has performed at numerous prestigious events. His international performances include festivals in South Africa, Bangkok, Muscat, the Netherlands, and Singapore.[6]

Awards and Honors

Rakesh Upadhyay has received several awards and honors for his contributions to Bhojpuri folk music, including:[7]

  • Vidyavachaspati Samman (Doctorate), November 5, 2023 – Vikramsheela Hindi Vidyapeeth, Bhagalpur, Bihar.[8]
  • Sangeet Natak Acadeny Award (2009 to 2019)[9]
  • Saryu Ratna Samman, 2023 – Barhalganj, Gorakhpur.
  • Vidya Bharati Samman, 2020
  • Global Youth of the Year Award, 2005
  • World Book of Records London Samman – For services during the COVID-19 pandemic through online performances.[10]

He has also been recognized by various organizations for his efforts in promoting and preserving Bhojpuri folk songs, and has been featured in numerous albums released by T-Series.[11][12]
