Business career
PNN Group
PNN Group is a family business founded in 1993 by his father Nizami Piriyev and Nasib.[11] Currently, PNN Group is a London-based international holding company with subsidiaries and investments in the energy, finance, food, luxury and media sectors. Through PNN, Nasib has developed numerous projects in Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Far East.[12]Through a former subsidiary, Buta Fashion Group, PNN Group previously known to own the franchise and distribution rights in Azerbaijan for known fashion, jewelry and accessory brands including Alfred Dunhill, DeBeers Diamond Jewelers, Nina Ricci, Brunello Cucinelli and others. Buta Fashion Group was sold in 2015 and PNN Group retained the rights to the DeBeers Jewelers and Steinway & Sons brands.[12]
In 2001, Nasib Priyev joined his family’s business, which specialized in manufacturing parts for crude oil refineries and gas condensate processing units. As the head of business development, he led the company through a period of significant growth, overseeing the completion of several key projects across Central Asia and beyond.[13]
One of his early achievements was the construction and commissioning of a 500-ton-per-day gas condensate processing unit in Kungrad, Uzbekistan, in 2003. Two years later, in 2005, he successfully completed a 100-ton-per-day oil refinery in Hayratan, Afghanistan. Continuing this expansion, he led the establishment of a 500-ton-per-day oil refinery unit in Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan, in 2006.
By 2008, under Priyev's leadership, the company had commissioned a 10,000-metric-ton-capacity oil terminal in Kalmykia, Russia, further solidifying their presence in the region. In 2009, he initiated the construction of a 2,000-ton-per-day methanol plant in Garadag, Azerbaijan, marking another milestone in the company’s growth.
Between 2003 and 2015, under his guidance, PNN Group also became a prominent player in commodity trading, with activities spanning Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Ukraine, the Baltics, and Turkey.[14]
AzMeCo
In 2007, the Piriyev family embarked on an ambitious project to develop a petrochemical complex in Garadag, Azerbaijan, with the centerpiece being a state-of-the-art methanol plant. To facilitate this venture, Azerbaijan Methanol Company (AzMeCo) was established under the leadership of Nizami Piriyev. Nasib Priyev, taking on the role of CEO, oversaw the construction of the 2,000-ton-per-day methanol plant, marking a significant milestone in the region's petrochemical industry.
As CEO, Nasib Priyev was instrumental in developing AzMeCo’s corporate structure and governance, collaborating closely with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to align the company with international standards.[15]The Piriyevs led in sustainable practices by incorporating green technologies at AzMeCo, including a CO2 capturing unit that boosted production and reduced emissions, establishing the company as a regional eco-leader.[16]
Nasib Priyev led AzMeCo in securing a $120 million non-recourse loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the largest ever for a private company in the Caucasus region. The loan agreement signing ceremony at the AzMeCo site in Garadag was attended by Britain’s former Prime Minister Tony Blair.[17] In addition to EBRD, Nasib conducted successful negotiations with other major European banks, including Credit Suisse, BNP Paribas, DEG, FMO, and the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank.[18] He also closed financing deals with Russia's leading banks, VTB and Sberbank.[19]
In 2012, Nasib Priyev led a two-year negotiation with global firms, including Vitol, Mitsui, Mitsubishi, and BP, securing a take-or-pay methanol off-take contract with BP.[20] He established AzMeCo’s HRM strategy and positioned the company as a symbol of integrity, efficiency, and advanced technology in Azerbaijan. The methanol plant was completed in 2014, with its first product exported to international markets via BP.[21]
PNN Lifestyle
In 2010, Nasib diversified the family business into the food, consumer, and lifestyle sectors, acquiring franchise and distribution rights for prestigious brands like De Beers, Alfred Dunhill, Nina Ricci, Steinway & Sons, WHSmith, and Superdry. Nasib founded AFK Ltd, which opened Azerbaijan's first KFC in 2011. He later sold the company and established UFC Ltd, launching KFC’s first restaurants in Kiev, Ukraine, in 2012.[22][23] In 2013, Nasib acquired a food court at Tsvetnoy in Moscow, transforming it into Tsvetnoy Bazar, a farmers' market offering gourmet and artisan foods, and opening an Azeri restaurant, Quzu, to promote Azeri culture and cuisine.[24][25] The next Bazar was developed in Baku and opened in Port Baku mall in 2015.
In 2013, PNN Group secured the rights to open WH Smith’s first large bookstore in Baku, near Port Bazar, and began expanding the brand in the region, with the first shop opening in Paveletsky Railway Station, Russia, in 2014.[26][27]
In 2013, Nasib opened a De Beers Jewelry boutique in Baku, marking the start of his fashion group's expansion. The group later acquired several luxury stores on Baku’s Neftchilyar Avenue, including Alfred Dunhill, Brunello Cucinelli, Santoni, Nina Ricci, and Sergio Rossi.[28]
Recognizing chovgan as the predecessor of polo, Nasib founded the Baku Guardians, the first Azeri professional polo club in London, after UNESCO recognized chovgan as part of Azerbaijan's Intangible Cultural Heritage. In May 2014, he organized an exhibition match and charity event with HRH Prince William captaining the team.[29]
Nasib has actively promoted chovgan since his early years. In September 2014, he organized the Chovgan Twilight Polo event in Richmond, Surrey, with Princess Tamara Czartoryski and Natalia Vodianova. The event featured an exhibition match with Baku Guardians and included a Gala night with a charity auction raising funds for War Child and the Naked Heart Foundation.[30]
In 2015, Nasib, his wife Olena, and perfumer Maria Candida Gentile launched Lankaran Forest perfume, inspired by Azerbaijan’s Lankaran forest. The fragrance, housed in a Lalique crystal flacon, debuted at an after-party for the 2nd Buta Festival at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The event featured an immersive "perfume sculpture" and attracted numerous British celebrities.[31][32] [33]
Investments
PNN Capital
After relocating to London, Nasib focused on restructuring PNN Group and has been actively investing in publicly traded businesses, including on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in China, since 2019.[34]
In 2020, Nasib joined a consortium that made a £400 million bid to acquire a controlling stake in West Ham United FC and redevelop the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The bid, which required owner David Sullivan to relinquish control, was rejected as Sullivan chose to sell a 27% stake to Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky for £200 million while retaining control of the club.[35]
Woodford Finance
In 2022, Nasib Piriyev’s PNN Capital Ltd. established Woodford Finance in partnership with Lord Woolley, Baron of Woodford. The first turnaround project for Woodford Finance was the distressed public company Lottery.com (NASDAQ: LYTRY) and its subsidiary Sports.com. Facing de-listing and major challenges, Woodford Finance invested in and worked to revitalize the company, currently engaging in a legal dispute with its existing management.[36][37]
In 2023, Woodford Finance launched 360Sports, a new sports and entertainment venture. 360Sports sponsors the 2024-25 Maltese Premier League and is developing a mobile fan engagement platform.[38] In the same year, Woodford Finance helped PNN Group reestablish its food and hospitality arm, Buta Kitchen, in the UK.[39] In 2023, Woodford Finance launched Lyned, a fintech product that began its rollout by onboarding its first banks in Europe and South Asia.[40]
Culture and Philanthropy
Buta Arts Centre
In 2004, Nasib established Buta Arts Centre, a non-for-profit organization which aims the development of Azerbaijan’s arts and culture. His non-profit Buta Arts Centre grew and created several branches like Buta Creative Lab (design and artwork), Buta Films (film and media production) and Buta Festival of Arts in London.[41][42]
Buta Arts Centre organized over 150 cultural events in Baku, Moscow, London, and beyond, producing numerous books, CDs, documentary films, and articles on Azerbaijani history, art, and culture. It became known for supporting both emerging and established Azeri artists in touring, recording, and development. From 2004 to 2016, Buta Arts Centre produced concerts, tours, and albums for Shahin Novrasli, supporting his musical career.
Buta Arts Centre's most impactful projects included organizing Andrea Bocelli's concert in Baku in 2009, Placido Domingo's concert in 2010, and producing Ennio Morricone's concert, where he conducted the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra and Choir. Other notable projects by Buta Arts Centre included Nino Katamadze at the Green Theatre, Andron Konchalovsky at Mugham Centre, and Keiko Matsui at Heydar Aliyev Palace.
Nasib has participated in numerous forums and conferences to promote Azerbaijan's culture, art, and music. In November 2020, he appeared on the BBC radio show "Forum" to discuss the Azeri ethnic music genre, mugham.[43]
Prosecutions
In 2015, Nasib and his father clashed with the Azerbaijan government. Azerbaijan authorities arrested his father in May 2015 and issued an Interpol arrest notice for Nasib Piriyev that same year. Azerbaijan government said the PNN Group did not repay a loan it obtained from the state-owned Azerbaijan International Bank. The Piriyevs claimed that these actions were politically motivated and deny all wrongdoing.[44][45]
