Kumayl Alloo (/ˈkuˈmeɪɫ ˈɔɫˈɫu/; Arabic: كُمَيْل أَللو; Urdu: كميل أللو; Gujarati: કુમાયલ એલુ; Hindi: कुमैल आलू; romanized: Kumaīl Allū) is a Tanzanian-American qāriʾ (Arabic: قارئ, lit.'Qur'an reciter') and research scholar. Distinguished by his unique and melodious qira'at (Arabic: قراءات, lit.'styles of recitation'),[1] his achievements in recent Qur'an competitions have garnered both national and international acclaim.[2][3]

Education

Alloo graduated as class valedictorian[4] from the High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College in 2021,[5] subsequently matriculating at Columbia University on a full, four-year scholarship.[6][7] He then became the only student in his graduating class at Columbia to have been admitted into medical school as a college sophomore[8][9]—two years before the traditional, pre-medical timeframe.[10][11] He is currently a student-athlete[12][13] at Columbia University[14] and a researcher at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in Manhattan, New York,[15][16] with academic interests in neurodegeneration, clinical medicine, cognitive neuroscience, Islamic theology, and Arabic linguistics.[17][18] He speaks English, Spanish, Kutchi, Swahili, Hindi, Urdu, and Gujarati, as well as Classical, Modern-Standard, and Maghrebi registers of Arabic.[19][20][21]

A three-time National Champion and World Champion qāriʾ,[22] Alloo's achievements in numerous Qur'an competitions— coupled with his unique and melodious qira'at—have garnered both national and international recognition.[1][3] Notably, he medalled at the National IMAM Qur'an Competition in 2019,[1] the National Al-Qadr Qur'an Competition in 2020, and the National IMAM Qur'an Competition again in 2021.[2] Then in 2022, he won 1st place in the Global Iqra' (اقرأ) Qur'an Recitation Competition, becoming the first Tanzanian-American to do so.[3]

He has since served as a judge on numerous tilawat, tarteel, and hifz competitions, and has been invited to teach qira'at and tajweed across North American madāris.[23] In 2023, Columbia University's Islamic Center appointed him a Muqri' (Arabic: مُقْرِئ, lit.'reciter') and Mu'addhin (Arabic: مُؤَذِّن, lit.'caller'), positions he continues to maintain.[19][24] He regularly recites religious texts, delivers sermons, and leads prayers for the university's Muslim community[25] as well.[26][27]

Research

In addition to Qur'an recitation, Alloo conducts peer-reviewed, scientific research, centered mostly around neurodegeneration[28][29] and behavioral neuroscience.[30][31] His most recent works have focused on brain development and deterioration in Parkinson's Disease[32][33][34] and Huntington's Disease[35]—common age-related, neurodegenerative disorders.[36][37]
