On 3 December 2023, a bombing during a Mass in Marawi, Philippines, killed four people.[1]

Background

Marawi is a Muslim-majority city in Lanao del Sur in Bangsamoro, an autonomous region in Mindanao in the south of the Philippines, a Catholic country.[1] In 2017, over 1,100 people were killed in a five-month siege between Islamic State-affiliated insurgents and Philippine Armed Forces in Marawi.[1]

Bombing

On 3 December 2023, during a Mass being conducted in the gym of Mindanao State University in Marawi, a bomb exploded.[1] It killed four people and injured about 40 others.[1]

Reaction

Police said the bomb was made from a mortar round.[1] They and the military said that the bombers belong to the Maute group.[1] President Bongbong Marcos blamed foreign terrorists.[1] Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. told a news conference there was a strong indication of a foreign element in the bombing.[1]
