Lux Balmaceda Pascal (born 4 June 1992)[1] is an American-born Chilean actress and transgender activist.[2][3]

Early and personal life

Born in California as Lucas Balmaceda,[2] she is the child of José Balmaceda and Verónica Pascal, both Chileans exiled after the 1973 coup, because her mother was the cousin of Andrés Pascal Allende, leader of the Chilean Revolutionary Left Movement.[4] She was the last of four siblings, among whom is the actor Pedro Pascal.[2] At the age of three she returned to Chile with her parents and brother Nicolás.[5]

In Chile she studied at Saint George's College, and in 2010 she entered to study theater at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.[5] She is due to graduate with her MFA in acting from the Juilliard School in 2023.[6]

She revealed she is a transgender woman in February 2021, changing her name to Lux Pascal, taking her maternal surname.[3]

Since 2011, she has been in a relationship with the actor José Antonio Raffo.[7]

Career

In 2014, while she was in her fourth year of theater, she starred in the play La noche obstinada, by Argentine choreographer Pablo Rotemberg.[8] That same year she made her television debut, joining the cast of the series Los 80, broadcast by Canal 13, where she played "Axel Miller".[9] In 2015 she was co-star of the TVN soap opera Juana Brava, and the following year she acted in the soap opera Veinteañero a los 40 on Canal 13. At the end of 2016 she had her film debut in Prueba de actitud, by Fabrizio Copano and Augusto Matte.

In 2017, she had her first appearance in an international series, when she played Elijah in the third season of the Netflix series Narcos, where she starred with her brother Pedro.[10]

In 2019, she participated in three Chilean film productions: No quiero ser tu hermano, by Sebastián Badilla, Ella es Cristina, by Gonzalo Maza, and El principe by Sebastián Muñoz.
