Emory Andrew Tate III[2] (born December 14, 1986) is a retired American-British kickboxer and Internet personality. Following his kickboxing career, Tate made a move to influencer marketing–however his online presence has been the subject of controversy and his activity on the website Twitter has led to his banning. His statements on topics such as sexual assault have been criticized as misogynistic. He has been at the center of legal investigations involving human trafficking and rape charges. His online career includes operating online training courses. Tate is the son of chess player Emory Tate,[5] and he currently resides in Romania.

In 2009, Tate was reportedly employed in selling television advertising, but since 2005, he had practiced boxing and martial arts on the side. That year, he won the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) Full Contact Cruiserweight championship in Derby, England, and was ranked number one at his weight in Europe. Though he had won 17 of his 19 fights, he said it was his first belt and title.[3]

Tate lost the fight for the vacant ISKA World Full-Contact Light Heavyweight Championship to Jean-Luc Benoit on points after 12 rounds. They had a rematch three months later in Luton, England, but this time Tate became champion, defeating Benoit via KO in round 8 of the scheduled 12 rounds.[6][verification needed]

In 2013, Tate won his second ISKA world title in a 12-round match. It was Tate's second world title in two different weight divisions. The fight was held in Châteaurenard, France.[4] Tate took the ISKA World Full-Contact Light Cruiserweight Championship via split decision.[2]

Online career

Tate has used online profiles to steer traffic to his website offering training courses on getting rich and "male-female interactions". According to the website, he operates a webcam studio using girlfriends as employees.[7] Tate and his brother Tristan have been accused of using webcam girls to sell 'sob stories' to desperate men and making millions of dollars doing so.[8] Tate set up the private online academy Hustler’s University (which is not an accredited educational institution), where members pay a monthly membership fee in order to receive instruction on topics such as dropshipping and cryptocurrency trading. Members also get a substantial commission for recruiting other people to the website. Tate became highly prominent during 2022 by encouraging members of Hustler's University to post large numbers of videos of him to social media websites, including TikTok, where videos of him have been viewed over 11.6 billion times.[9]

Controversies

In 2016, Tate gained public notoriety following his removal from the 17th season of Big Brother after the release of a video in which Tate appeared to beat a woman with a belt. He was subsequently removed from the show. Tate said the actions were consensual[7] and shared a clip to Facebook of a woman claiming to be the woman in the video saying, "it was pure game."[10]

He received attention for his tweets delineating his view of what qualifies as sexual harassment amid the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases and for tweeting several statements about his view that sexual assault victims share responsibility for their assaults.[7] In 2017, Tate said that depression is not a real illness, receiving significant backlash.[11] Three of Tate's Twitter accounts were suspended at different times. In 2021, an account he created to evade his previous ban was verified by Twitter contrary to their policies. The account appeared to have been part of a promotion with Bugatti. The account was subsequently permanently suspended, and Twitter said the verification occurred in error.[7]

Tate has said on a now-deleted video posted to his YouTube channel that it is easier to get off on rape charges in Eastern Europe and that is "probably 40% of the reason" he moved to Romania.[12] In April 2022, The Daily Beast reported that Tate's house was raided by Romanian police in relation to a human trafficking and rape investigation, prompted by reports that an American woman was being held at the property against her will. Romanian authorities found both a Romanian woman and an American woman at the property. As of April 2022, Romanian authorities said the investigation was still ongoing. A U.S. State Department spokesperson referred to the reported abduction but declined to comment further, citing privacy considerations.[13][better source needed]
