Hermes (Russian: Гермес)[3][4][5] is a family of modularly-designed guided missiles developed in Russia by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau.

Hermes-A is used by Kamov Ka-52K helicopter while Hermes-K is used by Pantsir-ME CIWS. A new Hermes-2 (or Izdeliye 305) is an upgraded variant, used by Kamov Ka-52M and Mil Mi-28NM helicopter. Hermes-2 featuring a new propulsion system allowing a maximum speed of Mach 6-8, their hypersonic speed can destroy any armored heavy-weight vehicle even outfitted with an Active Protection System (APS).[6]

Description

The Hermes system features a multistage rocket missile with a high-powered booster, and fire-and-forget capability with laser guidance and infrared homing.[7] It is designed to engage single and multiple targets (including tanks and other AFVs, fortifications of various types, naval surface targets and high-speed flying vehicles) with single or volley fire at ranges of up to 100 km and can track and destroy over-the-horizon targets.[8]

The high speed of the Hermes-2 likely gives it better target-penetration characteristics than subsonic anti-tank missiles. ~110 kg as heavy and Mach 6-8 speed, the Hermes-2's kinetic energy is ≈500 megajoules (or equal to 120 kg TNT explosive energy). This kinetic energy is easily to destroy any tank, even without missile's explosive warhead. Its Mach 6-8 speed means that it cannot be intercepted by existing Active Protection System and its precision makes it lethal to heavy targets such as main battle tank.[9]

It can be fired from aerial platform (Hermes-A, Hermes-2), land based (Hermes-S) and naval platforms (Hermes-K). The newest Russian combat helicopter Mi-28NM/Ka-52M will be able to carry up to four Hermes-2.
