Philip G. Kreyenbroek is a Dutch Iranist and known for his research on the Kurdish and Yazidi culture.[1]

Education

From 1966 he studied Persian, Arabic and Turkish at the University of Amsterdam from where he obtained a BSc in 1970.[2] He transferred to the University of Utrecht, from where he received an MSc in Persian, and Iranian studies in 1972.[2] He then followed up on his studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies(SOAS) at the University of London, where he attended lessons on Zoroastrianism, Gujarati and Iranian language.[2] In 1982, he obtained a Doctorate from the University of Leyden[2] with a thesis on the Sraoša in the Zoroastrian Tradition.[1]

Academic Career

Since 1985 he lectured Iranian Studies at the University of Utrecht.[2] He left Utrecht in 1988 and between 1988 and 1993[3] where he lectured of Kurdish and Pashtu at the SOAS in London[1] and between 1993 and 1996 he was appointed the Reader for Iranian languages and religions at the same University.[3] From 1996 onwards he was a Professor on Iranian studies at the University of Göttingen where he succeeded David Neil MacKenzie.[3] He went to Göttingen for his interest for the Yazidi culture and the fact that the existed a large Yazidi diaspora in Germany.[1] He retired from Göttingen in 2016.[4] According to his own account given in his farewell interview from the University Göttingen, he speaks 34 languages.[4] He has published numerous books on oriental languages and culture[1] and has also written for the Encyclopædia Iranica.[5]
