Pinaki Bhattacharya (Bengali: পিনাকী ভট্টাচার্য; born 15 December 1967) is a Bangladeshi exiled[4] YouTuber, blogger,[5][6] online activist and physician[7] known for his vehement criticism of Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League party-led government.[8] He has lived in exile in France since the Bangladesh road-safety protests in 2018.[9][10][11] Pinaki's activism played a crucial role in the ousting of Sheikh Hasina from power,[2] following which he campaigned for the Five-Point Demand issued by the Anti-discrimination Students Movement and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee.[12]

Early life

Pinaki was born in a Bengali Hindu Brahmin family in 1967. He later renounced Hinduism and embraced Islam under the influence of the Tablighi Jamaat.[13][14] He is the elder son of former school teacher of Bogra Zilla School and cultural organiser Shyamol Bhattacharya. He has one brother and one sister.[15] Although he studied medicine from 1985 to 1992, in Rajshahi Medical College and Later graduated from Rajshahi Medical College in 1992. But he is not praticing doctor. He claimed political asylum in France.[16] Pinaki Bhattacharya is best known as a Bangladeshi blogger and social activist.[17] He became popular for his role in the India out campaign in Bangladesh.[18][19] He was an adjunct faculty at American International University-Bangladesh.[20]

Education and career

Pinaki is a medical professional with an MBBS degree and an MBA from a business school, currently pursuing a PhD. After closing his pharmaceutical business and leaving Bangladesh, he moved into a specialized role in global medical relations. He is based in Paris, working as a Global Medical Relations Specialist for L'Oréal, managing medical affairs for five of their skincare brands.

Politics

Pinaki was once involved in leftist politics, being a former member of the Communist Party of Bangladesh.[21] He has written books on the history of Bangladeshi politics and various other subjects. He is a popular online activist, actively posting on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.[22] He has over 2.1 million subscribers on YouTube and over 700,000 followers on Facebook. He often writes and makes videos on the history of Bangladesh, ongoing politics, human rights issues, and issues of neighboring countries.[23]

Pinaki Bhattacharya has criticized the Bangladesh Awami League government's corruption,[24] human rights violations, kidnappings, and extrajudicial killings. His posts and tweets are often critical of Bangladesh's former ruling party, the Awami League.[25][26]

Internationally acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam was arrested by the police for his participation in the 2018 Bangladesh road-safety protests.[27] At the same time, military intelligence officers summoned Pinaki to their headquarters in Dhaka. They did not elaborate on why he was summoned. There are instances where military intelligence officers summon dissidents to their offices, many of whom have disappeared after meeting with military intelligence.[28][29]

Pinaki went into hiding and Intelligence officials raided his residence and office several time.[30] and kept his residence under surveillance.[31][32]

While he was in hiding, authorities banned him from leaving the country, but he was able to leave with the help of friends and reached Bangkok in January 2019.[33] Two months later he reached France and where he is under political asylum.[34][35]

In February 2024, Pinaki advised Bangladeshi actor Mosharraf Karim not to be involved in the promotion of the film Hubba directed by Bratya Basu and Hoichoi or Indian OTT platforms.[36] In May of the same year, he was criticized for spreading rumors on the EC's NID wing website showing fees in ₹ instead of ৳.[37]
