He was a nephew of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon), and a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret.

He was the son of Capt. The Hon. Michael Claude Hamilton Bowes-Lyon and Elizabeth Margaret Cator.[2] His paternal grandparents were The 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck.

He married Mary Pamela McCorquodale (b.1932) on 10 April 1956.[2] They had three children:[citation needed]
