(born 17 July 1963, in [[Surakarta|Solo]]) is the Chairperson of [[Democratic Party (Indonesia)|Democratic Party]] Faction in the [[People's Representative Council]] (lower house) of the Republic of [[Indonesia]] and Deputy Chairperson of Democratic Party for 2013 - 2015. She used to be the Vice-Chairperson of the [[Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation]]. A member of the People's Representative Council since 2004, she was re-elected in 2009. During her first term (2004-2009) Dr. Assegaf was appointed Special Staff to the First Lady of the Republic of Indonesia. Alongside these duties, as a strong proponent of women’s empowerment and gender issues, she also hosted and directed the television programme “Women’s Perspective” on the Republic of Indonesia TV Channel ([[TVRI]]). Dr. Assegaf had been Managing Director of the Business and Financial Consultant (Assegaf & Partners Ltd., 1998-2004) and, before that, an Associate of Winarto Soemarto & Associates (1993-1998).


Her early activism in her university years and her strong engagement with political and social issues as well as international affairs moved Dr. Assegaf to become a patron and founder of a number of institutions and think-tanks dealing with issues pertaining to youth, women and children’s rights, democracy, and education. In 2003, she joined the [[Democratic Party (Indonesia)|Democratic Party]], becoming active in the party’s organizational structure, including as Deputy Secretary-General and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Department.

Sejak diberi amanah sebagai ketua Fraksi Partai Demokrit pada bulan Mei tahun lalu, menggantikan bapak Jafar Hafsah, Ibu Nurhayanto, begitu sapaan akrabnya, terus memikirkan bagaimana untuk mendukung program pemerintah. Menurutnya, faksi partai di DPR merupakan kepanjangan tangan dari pemerintah. Sebagai partai berkuasa, dia akan memastikan monitor Partai Demokrit untuk mendukung terealisasinya program-program pemerintah yang pro rakyat.
Meskipun tidak mudah memimpin anggota Fraksi Partai Demokrit DPR RI yang berjumlah 148 orang, tetapi ibu Nurhayanto selalu optimis dan yakin bahwa dengan menjalin komunikasi yang baik secara intens dengan para anggota partai maka tidak akan ada jalan buntu pada setiap persoalan yang ada. Tidak hanya itu, ia juga mendesak anggota FPD DPR RI untuk mengunjungi konstituen mereka setiap Jumat sampai Minggu selama reses parlemen.
Sebelum bergabung dengan partai, Nurhayanto membuat perubahan karir yang cepat dari seorang ibu rumah tangga menjadi pengusaha, kemudian bergabung dengan sebuah konsultan keuangan dan bisnis sebagai asosiasi, sebelum mendirikan Assegaf dan Partners.
Pada 1990-an dia mendirikan organisasi relawan untuk anak-anak jalanan dan imigran, dimana hal ini bisa membuatnya bersentuhan langsung dengan kebijakan pemerintah saat itu. Misalnya, imigran yang overstay, harus segera dikembalikan ke negara asalnya. Saat itu, ia juga sering mengunjungi rumah tahanan mereka di Cengkareng, Banten, dan menjadi mediator antara imigran dan kedutaan besar mereka.

Karier Parlemen
Dalam perjalanan karir politiknya di parlemen sejak tahun 2004, Nurhayanto terlibat di komisi VI Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Republik Indonesia, bidang Perdagangan, Industri, Investasi, Usaha Kecil dan Skala Menengah, BUMN, dan National Standardisasi, dan Komisi I Pertahanan, Intelijen, Luar Negeri, Komunikasi dan Informasi.
Saat ini, ia adalah Ketua Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-Indonesia) dan Panitia Kerja MDGs (Tujuan Pembangunan Milenium), yang sebelumnya juga sebagai Wakil Ketua Badan Kerjasama Antar Parlemen. Dia juga bertindak sebagai Focal Point dari Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Republik Indonesia untuk Konvensi PBB dalam memerangi Desertifikasi.
Nurhayanto menyadari bahwa untuk sukses dalam politik, maka harus mandiri secara finansial. Dia memilah dan memilih partai politik yang sesuai dengan tujuan perjuannganya dan akhirnya mata dan hatinya secara mantap tertuju pada Partai Demokrit.
Nurhayanto adalah staf khusus ibu Negara yang bertugas untuk menulis pidato-pidato ibu negara. Ia juga memprakarsai koleksi pidato ibu negara karena sebelum bergabung di istana, belum ada koleksi-koleksi pidato ibu negara.
Pada saat kongres pertama Partai Demokrit tahun 2005, dia menjadi satu-satunya perempuan yang dinominasikan menjadi kandidat ketua umum Partai Demokrit bersaing dengan bapak Hadi Utomo, adik ipar ibu Ani Yudhoyono yang terpilih menjadi Ketua Umum Partai Demokrit. Dengan berpartisipasi dalam kompetisi ini, dia memotivasi para perempuan bahwa perempuan bisa memainkan peranan dalam politik.
Pemilu legislatif 2009, Nurhayanto kembali ikut meramaikan bursa pencalegan untuk Daerah Pemilihan Jawa Timur V yang meliputii Kota Malang, Kabupaten Malang dan Kota Batu atau Malang Raya. Dengan berbekal kerja keras, kerja cerdas dan kerja ikhlas untuk kepentingan rakyat, Nurhayanto terpilih menjadi anggota legislatif periode 2009-2014.
Kefasihannya dalam berbahasa Inggris dan Jepang, serta pengetahuannya tentang bahasa Arab dan Perancis, menjadikannya memilih duduk di kursi Komisi I DPR yang membawahi urusan luar negeri, pertahanan dan komunikasi. Dengan kemampuannya berkomunikasi dalam berbagai macam bahasa inilah, Nurhayanto sering diundang sebagai pembicara, baik dalam skala nasional maupun internasional. Ia juga menjalin hubungan baik dengan para duta besar dalam berdiplomasi maupun sharing gagasan dalam membangun hubungan bilateral dan multilateral.
Inter-Parliamentary Union
Sejak bergabung dengan delegasi Indonesia ke konferensi Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr. Nurhayanto Ali Assegaf telah aktif baik sebagai peserta dan ketua dalam pertemuan-pertemuan komite dari Inter-Parliamentary Union(IPU), khususnya sebagai anggota Komite Eksekutif dan Sub-Komite bagian Keuangan. Saat ini, ia adalah Presiden Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Komite Koordinasi Parlemen Perempuan.
Dr. Nurhayanto Ali Assegaf memimpin Delegasi Indonesia ke 124 Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Majelis dan pertemuan terkait di Panama City, Panama, pada 2011, dan ke 123 IPU Majelis dan pertemuan terkait di Jenewa, Swiss.
Potensinya yang kuat dalam mengembangkan dimensi regional kerjasama parlemen, Dr. Nurhayanto Ali Assegaf telah memainkan peran aktif dalam forum regional seperti Pertemuan Parlemen Asia (APA); ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA); Forum Asia- Parlemen Pasifik untuk Pendidikan (FASPPED), dan Uni Parlemen Negara Anggota OKI (PUIC).

Nurhayati Ali Assegaf, M.Si., M.P. (born 17 July 1963, in Solo) is the Chairperson of Democratic Party Faction in the People's Representative Council (lower house) of the Republic of Indonesia and Deputy Chairperson of Democratic Party for 2013 - 2015. She used to be the Vice-Chairperson of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation. A member of the People's Representative Council since 2004, she was re-elected in 2009. During her first term (2004-2009) Dr. Assegaf was appointed Special Staff to the First Lady of the Republic of Indonesia. Alongside these duties, as a strong proponent of women’s empowerment and gender issues, she also hosted and directed the television programme “Women’s Perspective” on the Republic of Indonesia TV Channel (TVRI). Dr. Assegaf had been Managing Director of the Business and Financial Consultant (Assegaf & Partners Ltd., 1998-2004) and, before that, an Associate of Winarto Soemarto & Associates (1993-1998).

Her early activism in her university years and her strong engagement with political and social issues as well as international affairs moved Dr. Assegaf to become a patron and founder of a number of institutions and think-tanks dealing with issues pertaining to youth, women and children’s rights, democracy, and education. In 2003, she joined the Democratic Party, becoming active in the party’s organizational structure, including as Deputy Secretary-General and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Department.

National Parliament

In the course of her parliamentary activities since 2004, Dr. Assegaf has been involved in a number of Commissions in the People's Representative Council, notably Commission VI on Trade, Industry, Investment, Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises, State Enterprises, and National Standardization; and Commission I on Defense, Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, Communication and Information.

She is Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Union[1] (IPU- Indonesia) and of the Working Group on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and Vice-Chairperson of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation. She also acts as Focal Point of the Indonesian House of Representatives for the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

She is notorious with her comments and actions. She criticized the very popular governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo ( now elected President of Indonesia) for fires in the capital. This comment earned her public wrath, public knew her comments were baseless and politically motivated. And now she is the motor of the condemned " walk out " during the voting in the Parliament, in which the Parliament reversed existing laws for governors and mayors to be elected by the people.

Inter-Parliamentary Union

Since joining the Indonesian delegation to the IPU conferences, Dr. Assegaf has been active both as a participant and chairperson in the meetings and committees of the IPU, in particular as a member of its Executive Committee and its Sub-Committee on Finance. She is President of the IPU Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians.

Dr. Assegaf headed the Indonesian Delegation to the 124th IPU Assembly and related meetings in Panama City, Panama, in 2011, and to the 123rd IPU Assembly and related meetings in Geneva, Switzerland.

Believing strongly in the need to develop the regional dimension of parliamentary cooperation, Dr. Assegaf has played an active part in regional forums such as the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA); the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA); the Forum of Asia-Pacific Parliamentarians for Education (FASPPED); and the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC).
