The school opened in 1992 as one of the original [[City Technology College]]s in England, with initial principal sponsors Martin Landau and the Forte family. In 2005, [[Government of the United Kingdom|HM Government]] invited the school to change its status from a College to an Academy and, on 1 September 2006, the school successfully became an academy.

In January 2018, the College was featured in an article in The Derby Telegraph after it was ranked as one of the top three academically achieving schools in Derby following the release of their Progress 8 and Attainment 8 results.[7] High prior attainers achieved a Progress 8 score of +0.52 while the Progress 8 score for disadvantaged pupils was also above average at +0.27.[6]
