Orwell repeatedly points out that he is not using nationalism in its ordinary language sense, and so the essay cannot reasonably be presented as offering an analysis or definition of nationalism as it is normally understood. I summarise Orwell's actual target, which is a tendency to shift one's attention to the relative social status of one or another political unit when in disagreement, as he points out at length in the first two or three pages of the essay. undo
