Late in the fourth or early in the third millennium <small>BCE</small>, the Sumerians, a non-Semitic people from Anatolia, the geographical region including Turkey, began to build the city of Ur. 

Located about 200 miles (325 kilometers) southeast of present-day Baghdad, Ur became the capital of the whole of southern Mesopotamia during the 25th century<small>BCE</small> (first dynasty of Ur). 

Throughout its history prior to Abraham, Ur had variously been an independent city-state ruled by a king, a city-state in vassalage to some other southern Mesopotamian city, or the seat of power that ruled over the entirety of southern Mesopotamia.

In all three phases, a system of city administration and government was established. Labor was highly specialized, and included agriculture, fishing, staff to service the temple, and various skilled craftsmen, such as sculptors, seal engravers, smiths, carpenters, potters, and workers in reeds and textiles. 

Such specialization in labor was made possible by a system in which part of the population received its daily sustenance from a central distribution supply, in return for its labor in non-agricultural pursuits. Agricultural enterprises formed the mainstay of the economy of ancient Ur. 

Utilizing a rotational system, approximately 3,000 acres.


The period usually refers to the 141 years circa 2334-2193<small>BCE</small> defined by the reign of the five kings of the Sargonic Dynasty. The area extended from north of Nippur to Sippar. 

Some scholars add another 40 years to this period to include the two later kings of the city-state Akkad--which has not yet been found by archaeologists. 

Sargon was King of Kish which implied suzerainty over northern Babylonia when he defeated the principal ruler in Sumer -- King Lugalzagesi of Uruk thus uniting the non-Semitic Sumer with the more northerly Akkad under one kingship.

===Third Dynasty of Ur (2112-2002 <small>BCE</small>)===

Ancient historiography ascribed to King Utu-Khegal of city-state Uruk (2133-2113 <small>BCE</small>) the actual role of liberating Sumer by ousting the Gutian hordes. After the death of Utukhegal his brother and general Ur-Nammu asserted his independence and established a kingship in Ur and its surroundings--thus establishing the Third Dynasty of Ur in 2112 <small>BCE</small>. At first however the kingdom of Ur was probably overshadowed by Lagash. 

The period between ca. 2112-2004 <small>BCE</small> is known as the Ur III period. Documents again began to be written in [[Sumerian language|Sumerian]], although Sumerian was becoming a purely literary or liturgical language, much as Latin later would be in [[Medieval]][[Europe]].<ref>Roux, Georges (1996), "Ancient Iraq" (3rd Edition)(Penguin Harmondsworth)</ref>

The Dynasty of King Gudea partly overlaps the reign of Ur-Nammu. Ur-Nammu consolidated his control by defeating the rival dynasty in Lagash and soon gained control of all of the Sumerian city-states. The Third Dynasty of Ur came to an end when the Elamites destroyed the city-state and captured Ibbi-Sin (2029-2002 <small>BCE</small>) and deported him to Elam.

The city-state ruler who finally achieved a temporary supremacy and whose dynasty was in some senses the heir to the Third Dynasty of Ur was Ishbi-Erra of Isin. Larsa alternated with Isin in controlling southern Mesopotamia in the first two centuries of the 2nd millennium <small>BCE</small>. Neither state could properly be regarded as sole legitimate ruler of Babylonia 

The Sumerian legacy included: cuneiform writing and epic narratives; architectural innovations (the column, arch, vault, and dome); increased specialization of the work force (sculptors, seal engravers, smiths, carpenters, shipbuilders, potters, and workers in reeds and textiles) and agricultural irrigation; etc.

By the late 24th century <small>BCE</small>, the Akkadians, under Sargon I, had established their capital at the newly built city of Akkad (Accad or Agade), north of Ur in the northern portion of southern Mesopotamia, and had created a large empire including: Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon; parts of Turkey and Iran; and possibly Egypt, Ethiopia, and Cyprus. In short, the Akkadian Empire was essentially an empire of the entire known world at that time. In the process, a large percentage of the Akkadians had become urbanized.

After coming to power in Kish, Sargon soon attacked Uruk, which was ruled by [[Lugal-Zage-Si]] of [[Umma]]. He captured Uruk and dismantled its famous walls. The defenders seem to have fled the city, joining an army led by fifty [[ENSI|ensis]] from the provinces. This Sumerian force fought [[Battle of Uruk|two pitched battles]] against the Akkadians, as a result of which the remaining forces of Lugal-Zage-Si were routed.<ref>Kramer 1963: 61; Van de Mieroop 2006: 64–66</ref> Lugal-Zage-Si himself was captured and brought to Nippur; Sargon inscribed on the pedestal of a statue (preserved in a later tablet) that he brought Lugal-Zage-Si "in a dog collar to the gate of Enlil."<ref name="Oppenheim 267">Oppenheim 1969: 267</ref> Sargon pursued his enemies to Ur before moving eastwards to Lagash, to the [[Persian Gulf]], and thence to Umma. He made a symbolic gesture of washing his weapons in the "lower sea" (Persian Gulf) to show that he had conquered Sumer in its entirety.<ref name="Oppenheim 267"/>

Another victory Sargon celebrated was over Kashtubila, king of [[Kazalla]]. According to one ancient source, Sargon laid the city of Kazalla to waste so effectively "that the birds could not find a place to perch away from the ground."<ref name="Oppenheim">Oppenheim 1969: 266</ref>

To help limit the chance of revolt in [[Sumer]] he appointed a court of 5,400 men to "share his table" (i.e., to administer his empire).<ref>Kramer 1963: 61</ref> These 5,400 men may have constituted Sargon's army.<ref>Frayne 1993: 31</ref> The governors chosen by Sargon to administer the main city-states of Sumer were Akkadians, not Sumerians.<ref>Van de Mieroop 2006: 62–68</ref> The [[Semitic languages|Semitic]] [[Akkadian language]]became the ''lingua franca'', the official language of inscriptions in all[[Mesopotamia]], and of great influence far beyond. Sargon's empire maintained trade and diplomatic contacts with kingdoms around the [[Arabian Sea]] and elsewhere in the Near East. Sargon's inscriptions report that ships from [[Majan (civilization)|Magan]],[[Meluhha]], and [[Dilmun]], among other places, rode at anchor in his capital of Agade.<ref>Kramer 1963: 62, 289–291</ref>

The former religious institutions of Sumer, already well-known and emulated by the Semites, were respected. Sumerian remained, in large part, the language of religion and Sargon and his successors were patrons of the Sumerian cults. Sargon styled himself "anointed priest of [[Anu]]" and "great ''ensi'' of [[Enlil]]".<ref>Van de Mieroop 2006: 67–68</ref> While Sargon is often credited with the first true empire, Lugal-Zage-Si preceded him; after coming to power in Umma he had conquered or otherwise come into possession of Ur, Uruk, [[Nippur]], and [[Lagash]]. Lugal-Zage-Si claimed rulership over lands as far away as the Mediterranean.<ref>Beaulieu 2005: 43</ref>
He was king for 50 years and his empire lasted 100 years after he died.

Around the last half of the 23rd century <small>BCE</small>, the Akkadian Empire was ruled by Naram-Sin, the grandson of Sargon I. Naram-Sin was a man of despotic pride and arrogance, who took the royal titles of "king of the four quarters of the earth" and "god of Akkad". It may be noted here that he installed his daughter, Enmenanna, in the office of high priestess of the Akkadian moon god, Sin, at the temple in Ur, which was one of the major cult cities in ancient Mesopotamia where the moon was the center of worship.

The Empire of Akkad in 2154 <small>BCE</small>, within 180 years of its founding, ushering in a period of regional decline that lasted until the rise of the [[Third Dynasty of Ur]] in 2112 <small>BCE</small>. By the end of the reign of Naram-Sin's son, [[Shar-kali-sharri]] (2217–2193 <small>BCE</small>), the empire had weakened. There was a period of anarchy between 2192 BC and 2168 <small>BCE</small>. [[Shu-Durul]] (2168–2154 <small>BCE</small>) appears to have restored some centralized authority, however he was unable to prevent the empire eventually collapsing outright from the invasion of barbarian peoples from the [[Zagros Mountains]] known as the [[Gutian period|Gutians]].

Little is known about the Gutian period, or how long it endured. Cuneiform sources suggest that the Gutians' administration showed little concern for maintaining agriculture, written records, or public safety; they reputedly released all farm animals to roam about Mesopotamia freely, and soon brought about [[famine]] and rocketing grain prices.  The decline coincided with severe [[drought]], possibly connected with climatic changes reaching all across the area from Egypt to Greece. The Sumerian king [[Ur-Nammu]] (2112–2095 <small>BCE</small>) cleared the Gutians from Mesopotamia during his reign.

It has recently been suggested that the regional decline at the end of the Akkadian period (and of the [[First Intermediary Period]] that followed the [[Ancient Egypt]]ian [[Old Kingdom]]) was associated with rapidly increasing aridity, and failing rainfall in the region of the Ancient Near East, caused by a [[4.2 kiloyear event|global centennial-scale drought]].<ref>{{cite journal | author = Richard A. After four centuries of urban life, this abrupt climatic change evidently caused abandonment of Tell Leilan, regional desertion, and collapse of the Akkadian empire based in southern Mesopotamia. Synchronous collapse in adjacent regions suggests that the impact of the abrupt climatic change was extensive.".<ref>Weiss. The Sumerian King List, describing the Akkadian Empire after the death of Shar-kali-shari, states:

However, there are no known year-names or other archaeological evidence verifying any of these later kings of Akkad or Uruk, apart from a single artifact referencing king [[Dudu of Akkad]]. The named kings of Uruk may have been contemporaries of the last kings of Akkad, but in any event could not have been very prominent.

Evidence from [[Tell Leilan]] in Northern Mesopotamia shows what may have happened. The site was abandoned soon after the city's massive walls were constructed, its temple rebuilt and its grain production reorganized. The debris, dust and sand that followed show no trace of human activity. Soil samples show fine wind-blown sand, no trace of earthworm activity, reduced rainfall and indications of a drier and windier climate. Evidence shows that skeleton-thin sheep and cattle died of drought, and up to 28,000 people abandoned the site, seeking wetter areas elsewhere. Tell Brak shrank in size by 75%. Trade collapsed.[[Nomad]]ic herders such as the [[Amorite]]s moved herds closer to reliable water suppliers, bringing them into conflict with Akkadian populations. This climate-induced collapse seems to have affected the whole of the Middle East, and to have coincided with the collapse of the [[Egypt]]ian Old Kingdom.<ref>Harvey Weiss, et al., The genesis and collapse of Third Millennium north Mesopotamian Civilization, Science, vol. 291, pp. 995–1088, 1993</ref>

This collapse of rain-fed agriculture in the Upper Country meant the loss to southern Mesopotamia of the agrarian subsidies which had kept the Akkadian Empire solvent.  Water levels within the Tigris and Euphrates fell 1.5 meters beneath the level of 2600 <small>BCE</small>, and although they stabilized for a time during the following Ur III period, rivalries between pastoralists and farmers increased. Attempts were undertaken to prevent the former from herding their flocks in agricultural lands, such as the building of a {{convert|180|km|0|abbr=on}} wall known as the "Repeller of the Amorites" between the Tigris and Euphrates under the Ur III ruler [[Shu-Suen|Shu-Sin]]. Perhaps the most intriguing person is the famed patriarch Abraham, whom plays a prominent and pivotal role in the Judaeo-Islamic history. 
Abraham is central to the mainstream religions that bear his name; Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, and to include–but not limited to–Bahá'í, Druze, Samaritanism, and Yazdânism, hence known as the ''Abrahamic'' religions. For thousands of years his known deeds has heralded an example for humankind, in pursuance of humbleness, patience, kind exhortation, giving of charity, self-discipline, and obedience. It was through these benevolent actions and unwavering faith in G<small>OD</small> سبحانه و تعالى, and steadfast in aiding welfare to those in need, which given him the infamous title of "Friend of G<small>OD</small>"; signifying the ever-bearing special, yet unique relationship between G<small>OD</small> سبحانه و تعالى and Abraham.

Whether Abraham was born into an urbanized or a nomadic Akkadian family remains unanswered. Judaeo-Christian scripture, the Qur'an, and Sahih Ahadith provide no concrete evidence regarding whether Abraham's family was urbanized and lived full time in Ur, or whether they were still nomadic and migrated around the rural areas surrounding Ur. 

Likewise, one simply doesn't know whether Azar and his sons were skilled artisans working in the city, or whether they were agricultural workers or shepherds, who tended their flocks in the countryside.

It was probably during, or slightly before, the reign of the fourth Akkadian king, Naram-Sin, that Abraham was born.[see Appendix XX]]

Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (Rambam) stated: All converts are considered descendants of Abraham because the Torah calls him the father of...nations, and therefore a convert can be called a son of Abraham. This means that the spiritual mission of mankind, which began with Adam, was now transferred to Abraham.Abraham back to Adam. Terah is the tenth descendant from Noah, who fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran; Haran fathered Lot. In addition, B'resheith lists two brothers of Abram, i.e. Nahor II and Haran II, and one nephew, i.e. Lot, the son of Haran II.

According to the P strand of B'resheith, there were ten generations from Noah to Abraham. The Mishnah illustrates that it demonstrates how patient GOD is, for all generations kept provoking Him, until the patriarch Abraham came and received the reward of them all.

There had been ten generations from Adam to Noah, giving humankind the opportunity to fulfill its responsibility to carry out the plan of Creation; they failed, and the Flood wiped them away. Then the mission fell to Noah and his offspring. The cycle was repeated: the next generation failed as well, but this time Abraham was able to prevent destruction. So great was he and so concerned with helping others that he was able to save the world. Simultaneously, he assumed the role that had previously been that of the entire race: He and his offspring would be the people of GOD, and bear the primary responsibility for bringing the Divine Plan to fruition. The children of Noah would be left with the seven universal laws, but Abraham's progeny would accept the Torah with its 613 commandments.

There have been over two hundred attempts to match the biblical chronology to dates in history, few of the more influential being:

*Traditional Jewish dates (circa 1812 <small>BCE</small> to 1637<small>BCE</small>).
*17th century Archbishop James Ussher (circa 1976 <small>BCE</small> to 1801<small>BCE</small>).
*According to the Tanakh, a standardized Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible, places Abraham's birth 1,948 years after the Creation, or 1948 ''anno mundi''. The two other major textual traditions have different dates, the translated Greek Septuagint putting it at 3312<small>AM</small> and the Samaritan version of the Torah at 2247<small>AM</small>. All three agree that he died at the age of 175.
*Abraham appears to have been born circa 2,166 <small>BCE</small>.{{sfn|Dirks|2002|p=11}}

In the book of ''Genesis'', ''J'' strand, indicates that Abraham's original name was Abram. Etymologically the name suggests it was had really been''Abi-ram'' [i.e. "the (my) father is exalted"]. The tractate <i>Berachos 13a</i> interprets the verse (''Genesis'' 17:5) as positive and negative commandments, it is strictly forbidden to refer to Abraham as "Abram." 

Three factors should be considered in evaluating the name change as reported in''B'resheith''.
#the name change is obviously in response to the birth of Ishmael, as Ishaq, عليهم السلام reportedly was not yet born. It is suggested that the name change reported in''P''strand of''B'resheith'' was to thread together two separate traditions, possible two different individuals, and had been merged into the<i>B'resheith/Genesis</i> narrative.
#the etymology utilized in ''B'resheith'' is wrong. "Ancestor of a multitude (of nations)" would be "Abhamon", not "Abraham".

The rabbinical view holds that since after the Flood, Creation now begins anew, for it was Abraham who would bear the burden of holiness in the world.

Furthermore, Abram's name was changed to<i>Abraham</i>, a contraction representing his new status as <i>av hamon</i>—father of a multitude—whereas the name Avram represented his former status as only <i>av Aram</i>—father of Aram, his native country. Although he was no longer associated only with Aram, the letter was retained. 

Abraham's new description as <i>father of a multitude of nations</i> was not rhetorical; it has halakhic implications that shed light on its deeper meaning. In explaining how converts who bring their 'first fruits' (bikkurim) to the Temple can recite the required formula{{efn|"These bring (bikkurim] but do not make the recital: the proselyte, since he cannot say: which the L<small>ORD</small> hath sworn to our fathers, to give unto us’. If his mother was an Israelite, then he both brings bikkurim and recites the declaration. when he prays privately, he shall say:’O GOD of the fathers of Ysra'el’; but when he is in the synagogue, he should say: ‘the GOD of your fathers’. But if his mother was an Israelite woman, he says: ‘the god of our fathers’.}} thanking GOD for the land He swore to give <i>our</i>fathers (''Devarim'' 26:3)—though converts do not descend from the Patriarchs.

Yet, the question remains how one is to reconcile the statement in the ''P'' strand of''B'resheith'' that the father of Abraham was Terah.<-----The identification of Terah as the father of Abraham is also found in ''Joshua'' 24:2. While not part of the''Torah'', ''Joshua''is part of the Hebrew scriptures and this particular verse appears to be from the eigth century <small>BCE</small> ''E'' strand.-----><-----Smith, R.H.; The Book of ''Joshua''. At least four possibilities exist.

#One option would be simply to disregard the ''P'' strand information. However, this course of action fails to result in any harmony between and any synthesis of the Judaeo-Christian and Islamic information.

Two issues immediately emerge in comparing the lineage information found in the''Qur'an'' and in the ''P'' strand of ''B'resheith''. First, the ''Qur'an'' and''P''disagree about the name of the father of Abraham. Second, the ''P'' account gives a much more complete genealogy, than does the ''Qur'an''.

This imposes a few problems with the Abrahamic genealogy contained in the ''P'' strand of''B'resheith''. Normally, a genealogy as complete as that given for Abraham in''P''would establish some measure of confidence in the historical accuracy of the genealogy. Typically, the more detail provided, the more confident one is of the account given. However, there are a number of reasons to question the accuracy of ''P'''s reported genealogy for Abraham. In what follows, two issues are dealt with in reverse order; these reasons are presented below.

That it will be kept with Abraham and his descendants. In exchange for land for his family to flourish, every male among them shall be circumcised as a sign of the covenant.

==Abram and Sarai==
There was a severe famine in the land of Canaan, so that Abram and Lot and their households, travelled south to <!-- northern -->[[Ancient Egypt|Egypt]]. En route, Abram told his wife Sarai, to say that she was his sister, so that the [[Egypt]]ians would not kill him. ({{Bibleverse||Genesis|12:10–13|HE}}) When they entered Egypt, the princes of Pharaoh praised Sarai's beauty to the [[Pharaoh]], and she was taken into his palace, and Abram was given provisions: "oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels." However, God afflicted the Pharaoh and his household with great plagues, ({{Bibleverse||Genesis|12:14–17|HE}}) and after discovering that Sarai was really Abram's wife, the Pharaoh wanted nothing to do with them. When they came back to the Bethel and Hai area, Abram's and Lot's sizeable numbers of livestock occupied the same pastures ("and the [[Canaan]]ite and the [[Perizzite]] dwelled then in the land.") This became a problem for the herdsmen who were assigned to each family’s cattle. The conflicts between herdsmen had become so troublesome that Abram graciously suggested that Lot choose a separate area, either on the left hand or on the right hand, that there be no conflict amongst "brethren". But Lot chose to go east to the plain of [[Jordan river|Jordan]] where the land was well watered everywhere as far as Zoar, and he dwelled in the cities of the plain toward Sodom. During the rebellion of the [[Sodom and Gomorrah|Jordan River cities]] against [[Elam]], ({{Bibleverse||Genesis|14:1–9|HE}}) Abram’s nephew, Lot, was taken prisoner along with his entire household by the invading [[Elamite]] forces. The Elamite army came to collect booty from the spoils of war, after having just defeated the King of Sodom’s armies. ({{Bibleverse||Genesis|14:8–12|HE}}) Lot and his family, at the time, were settled on the outskirts of the [[Sodom and Gomorrah|Kingdom of Sodom]] which made them a visible target. One person that escaped capture came and told Abram what happened. Once Abram received this news, he immediately assembled 318 trained servants. Abram’s elite force headed north in pursuit of the Elamite army, who were already worn down from the [[Battle of the Vale of Siddim|Battle of Siddim]]. When they caught up with them at [[Dan (Bible)|Dan]], Abram devised a battle strategy plan by splitting his group into more than one unit, and launched a night raid. Also, [[Melchizedek]] king of Salem ([[Jerusalem]]), a priest of [[Elyon|God Most High]], brought out bread and wine and blessed Abram and God. Abram then gave Melchizedek a [[tithe|tenth]] of everything. The king of Sodom then offered to let Abram keep all the possessions if he would merely return his people. The alliance of four states would have ruled over cities/countries that were spread over a wide area: from Elam at the extreme eastern end of the [[Fertile Crescent]] to Anatolia at the western edge of this region. In this account, Chedorlaomer is described as the king to whom the cities of the plain pay tribute. When [[cuneiform]] was first deciphered in the 19th century [[Theophilus Pinches]] translated some Babylonian tablets which were part of the [[Spartoli collection]] in the [[British Museum]] and believed he had found in the ''[[Chedorlaomer Text]]'' the names of three of the "Kings of the East" named in Genesis 14. As this is the only part of Genesis which seems to set Abraham in wider political history, it seemed to many 19th and early 20th century exegetes and Assyriologists to offer an opening to date Abraham, if the kings in question could only be identified.

In 1887, [[Eberhard Schrader|Schrader]] was the first to propose that Amraphel could be an alternate spelling for [[Hammurabi]].<ref>{{cite book |author=Orr, James, general editor |chapter=Hammurabi |title=International Standard Bible Encyclopedia |year=1915 |url=http://www.studylight.org/enc/isb/view.cgi?number=T4049}}</ref> The terminal ''-bi'' on the end of Hammurabi's name was seen to parallel Amraphel since the cuneiform symbol for ''-bi'' can also be pronounced ''-pi''. Tablets were known in which the initial symbol for Hammurabi, pronounced as ''kh'' to yield ''Khammurabi'', had been dropped, so that ''Ammurapi'' was a viable pronunciation. If Hammurabi were deified in his lifetime or soon after (adding ''-il'' to his name to signify his divinity), this would produce something close to the Bible's Amraphel. A little later [[Jean-Vincent Scheil]] found a tablet in the Imperial Ottoman Museum in [[Istanbul]] from Hammurabi to a king named Kuder-Lagomer of Elam, which he identified with the same name in Pinches' tablet. Today these dating attempts are little more than a historical curiosity. On the one hand, as the scholarly consensus on Near Eastern ancient history moved towards placing Hammurabi in the late 18th century (or even later), and not the 19th, confessional and evangelical theologians found they had to choose between accepting these identifications or accepting the biblical chronology; most were disinclined to state that the Bible might be in error and so began synchronizing Abram with the empire of [[Sargon I]], and the work of Schrader, Pinches and Scheil fell out of favour. There is rarely ever consensus on any matters involving Bible interpretation; one modern interpretation of Genesis 14 is summed up by Michael Astour in ''The Anchor Bible Dictionary'' (s.v. "Amraphel", "Arioch" and "Chedorlaomer"), who explains the story as a product of anti-Babylonian propaganda during the 6th century [[Babylonian captivity]] of the Jews:

The [[Chedorlaomer tablets]] are now thought to be from the 6th or 7th century BCE, a millennium after the time of [[Hammurabi]], but at roughly the time when the main elements of Genesis are thought to have been set down. Another prominent scholar considers a relationship between the tablet and Genesis speculative, but identifies Tudhula as a veiled reference to Sennacherib of Assyria, and Chedorlaomer, i.e. Kudur-Nahhunte, as "a recollection of a 12th century BCE king of Elam who briefly ruled Babylon."<ref>{{cite journal |author= Hindel, Ronald |title=Finding Historical Memories in the Patriarchal Narratives |journal=Biblical Archaeology Review|volume=21 |issue=4 |year=1994 |pages=52–59, 70–72}}</ref>

The last serious attempt to place a historical Abraham in the second millennium resulted from discovery of the name ''Abi-ramu'' on Babylonian contracts of about 2000 BCE, but this line of argument lost its force when it was shown that the name was also common in the first millennium,<ref name="Thompson">{{cite book |author=Thompson, Thomas |title=The Historicity of the Patriarchal Narratives: The Quest for the Historical Abraham |publisher=Trinity Press International |location=Valley Forge, Pa |year=2002 |url=http://books.google.com/?id=lwrzapZYqFAC&dq |isbn=1-56338-389-6}}</ref> leaving the patriarchal narratives in a ''relative'' biblical chronology but without an anchor in the known history of the Near East.

A few evangelical scholars continue to argue against the consensus: Kitchen asserts that the only known historical period in which a king of [[Elam]], whilst allied with Larsa, was able to enlist a Hittite king and a King of Eshunna as partners and allies in a war against Canaanite cities is in the time of Old Babylon c 1822-1764 BC. This is when Babylon is under Hammurabi and Rim Sin I controls Mari, which is linked through trade to the Hittites and other allies along the length of the Euphrates. This trade is mentioned in the Mari letters, a source which documents a geo-political relationship back to when the ships of Dilmun, Makkan and Meluhha docked at the quays of Agade in the time of Sargon. In the period of Old [[Babylon]], c 1822-1764 BC, Rim Sin I brought together kings of Syro-Anatolia whose kingdoms were located on the [[Euphrates]] in a coalition focused on [[Mari, Syria|Mari]] whose king was Shamsi Adad. At the age of 14, Ishmael became a free man along with his mother. Under Mesopotamian law, their freedom enjoined them from laying claim to any inheritance that Abraham and Sarah had. The Lord’s covenant also made clear Ishmael was not to inherit Abraham’s house and that Isaac would be the instrument of the covenant. The name of an important 2nd Century CE sage—[[Ishmael ben Elisha]], known as "[[Rabbi Ishmael]]" (רבי ישמעאל), one of the [[Tannaim]]—indicates that the Bibilical Ishmael enjoyed a positive image among Jews of the time.{{Citation needed|date=June 2009}}

Rabbinical commentators in the [[Midrash]] [[Genesis Rabbah]] also say that Ishmael's mother Hagar was the Pharaoh's daughter, thereby making Ishmael the grandson of the Pharaoh.  This could be why Genesis 17:20 refers to Ishmael as the father of 12 mighty princes.  According to Genesis 21:21, Hagar married Ishmael to an Egyptian woman, and if Rabbinical commentators are correct about Hagar being the daughter of the Pharaoh, his marriage to a woman selected by the Pharaoh's daughter could explain how and why his sons became princes.

However, according to other Jewish commentators, Ishmael's mother Hagar is identified with [[Keturah]], the woman Abraham married after the death of Sarah, stating that Abraham sought her out after Sarah's death. She was so upset by it that she demanded from her husband, who was now referred to as [[Abraham]], to send Hagar and her son away. She declared that Ishmael would not share in Isaac's inheritance. Abraham was greatly distressed by his wife's words and sought the advice of God. Islamic sources state that Abraham would go between Palestine and Mecca (in Arabia) and later Abraham and his eldest son Ishmael constructed the Kaaba in Mecca. Allaah commanded Ibraaheem and Ismaa’eel to cleanse the House of idols and other impurities so that it would be pure for those who would circumambulate it and stand and bow and prostrate (in prayer). When Ibraaheem built the House, Allaah commanded him to call mankind to perform the Hajj, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

'And proclaim to mankind the Hajj (pilgrimage). They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Hajj)'

Since the 1970s, the custom has arisen of giving the name "Hagar" to newborn female babies. Not long afterward, during the heat of the day, Abraham had been sitting at the entrance of his tent by the [[Pistacia palaestina|terebinths]] of [[Mamre]]. He looked up and saw three men in the presence of God. Then he ran and [[Bowing (social)|bowed]] to the ground to welcome them. Abraham then offered to wash their feet and fetch them a morsel of bread of which they assented. Abraham rushed to [[Sarah]]’s tent to order cakes made from choice flour, then he ordered a servant-boy to prepare a choice calf. When all was prepared, he set curds, milk and the calf before them waiting on them, under a tree, as they ate. ({{Bibleverse||Genesis|18:1–8|HE}})

One of the visitors told Abraham that upon his return next year, Sarah would have a son. While at the tent entrance, Sarah overheard what was said and she laughed to herself about the prospect of having a child at their ages. The visitor inquired to Abraham why Sarah laughed at bearing a child for her age as nothing is too hard for God. Frightened, Sarah denied laughing.

After eating, Abraham and the three visitors got up. They walked over to the peak that overlooked the ''Cities of the Plain'' to discuss the fate of [[Sodom and Gomorrah]] for their detestable sins that were so great, it moved God to action. Because Abraham’s nephew was living in Sodom, God revealed plans to confirm and judge these cities. At this point, the two other visitors leave for Sodom. Then Abraham turned to the Lord and pleaded incrementally with Him (from fifty persons to less) that 'if there were at least ten righteous men found in the city, would not God spare the city?' For the sake of ten righteous people, God declared that he would not destroy the city. ({{Bibleverse||Genesis|18:17–33|HE}})

When the two visitors got to Sodom to conduct their report, they planned on staying in the city square. However, Abraham’s nephew, Lot, met with them and strongly insisted that these two “men” stay at his house for the night. A rally of men stood outside of Lot’s home and demanded that they bring out his guests so that they may “know” them. However, Lot objected and offered his virgin daughters to the rally of men instead. They rejected that notion and sought to break Lot’s doors down to get to his male guests,<ref>({{Bibleverse||Genesis|19:1–9|HE}})</ref> thus confirming the “outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah” and sealing their doom. Early the next morning, Abraham awoke and went to the elevation that looked over the River Jordan plain, at the very spot where he stood before God, the day prior. From his vantage point, he saw what became of the cities of the plain as “dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.” ({{Bibleverse||Genesis|19:27–29|HE}}) This meant that there was not even ten righteous people in any of those cities. ===Abraham and Abimelech===
Abraham settled between [[Kadesh (South of Israel)|Kadesh]] and [[Shur (Bible)|Shur]] in the land of the [[Philistine]]s. While he was living in [[Gerar]], Abraham openly claimed that Sarah was his sister. Upon discovering this news, King [[Abimelech]] had her brought to him. Later, God came to Abimelech in a dream and declared that taking her would result in death because she was a married woman. Abimelech had not laid hands on her, so he inquired if he would also slay a righteous nation, especially since Abraham had claimed that he and Sarah were siblings. In response, God told Abimelech that he did indeed have a blameless heart and that is why he continued to exist. However, should he not return the wife of Abraham back to him, God would surely destroy Abimelech and his entire household. Abimelech was informed that Abraham was a prophet who would pray for him.({{Bibleverse||Genesis|20:1–7|HE}})

Early next morning, Abimelech informed his servants of his dream and approached Abraham inquiring as to why he had brought such great guilt upon his kingdom. Abraham stated that he thought there was no fear of God in that place, and that they might kill him for his wife. Then Abraham defended what he had said as not being a lie at all: "And yet indeed ''she is'' my sister; she ''is'' the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife." ({{Bibleref2|Gen.|20:12|9|Genesis 20:12}}) Abimelech returned Sarah to Abraham, and gave him gifts of sheep, oxen, and servants; and invited him to settle wherever he pleased in Abimelech’s lands. Further, Abimelech gave Abraham a thousand pieces of silver to serve as Sarah's vindication before all. Abraham then prayed for Abimelech and his household, since the {{LORD}} had stricken the women with infertility because of the taking of Sarah. ({{Bibleverse||Genesis|20:8–18|HE}})

After living for some time in the land of the Philistines, [[Abimelech]] and [[Phicol]], the chief of his troops, approached Abraham because of a dispute that resulted in a violent confrontation at a well. Abraham then reproached Abimelech due to his Philistine servant's aggressive attacks and the seizing of Abraham’s well. Abimelech claimed ignorance of the incident. Then Abraham offered a pact by providing sheep and oxen to Abimelech. Further, to attest that Abraham was the one who dug the well, he also gave Abimelech seven ewes for proof. Because of this sworn oath, they called the place of this well: [[Beersheba]]. After Abimelech and Phicol headed back to [[Philistia]], Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba and called upon "the name of the {{LORD}}, the everlasting God." At some point in [[Isaac]]'s youth, Abraham was commanded by God to offer his son up as a sacrifice in the land of [[Moriah]]. The patriarch traveled three days until he came to the mount that God told him of. He commanded the servants to remain while he and Isaac proceeded alone into the mount. Isaac carrying the wood upon which he would be sacrificed. Along the way, Isaac asked his father where the animal for the burnt offering was, to which Abraham replied "God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering". Just as Abraham was about to sacrifice his son, he was interrupted by "The angel of the {{Lord}}", and he saw behind him a [[Domestic sheep|ram]] "caught in a thicket by his horns", which he sacrificed instead of his son. Rabbinic Judaism faced a seeming contradiction with Abraham, in that he lived before the laws of the [[Torah]] had been revealed to [[Moses]].  Therefore, Abraham would not have been knowledgeable of all of the Torah's commandments, besides the instruction of practicing circumcision. The rabbis (traditional teachers and interpreters of the Torah), however, interpreted the narratives of the Torah in Genesis to say that Abraham had in fact known and practiced the Law in its entirety, although there are different interpretations as to how exactly Abraham practiced different aspects of the law.

Rabbi [[Nahmanides]], known as ''the Ramban'', was a medieval Jewish scholar of the 13th century who disagreed with Rashi and Ibn Ezra concerning Abram’s birthplace. The Ramban states that because Ur Kaśdim was settled by Ham’s descendants, this could not be Abram’s birthplace as he was a descendant of [[Shem]]. However, everyone does agree that Abram’s family under the headship of his father, [[Terah|Terach]], had all lived in Ur Kaśdim before being called to move to [[Land of Canaan|Canaan]].<ref name="Singer, 2005"/>

The three Rabbis also agree that Terach’s native homeland was Charan, the biblical place known as [[Haran]] in {{Bibleref2|Genesis|11:31,32|NIV}}, where the ''House of Terach'' was located.{{Bibleref2c|Genesis|12:1|NIV|Gen.12:1}}<ref name="Singer, 2005"/> Since this settlement was established by Shem’s descendants, only Ramban assumed that Charan had to be Abram’s birthplace. In the [[New Testament]] Abraham is mentioned prominently as a man of faith (see e.g. [[Epistle to the Hebrews|Hebrews]] 11), and the apostle [[Paul of Tarsus|Paul]] uses him as an example of [[salvation by faith]], as the progenitor of the Christ (or [[Messiah]]) (see [[Epistle to the Galatians|Galatians]] {{Bibleverse-nb||Galatians|3:16|KJV}}).

The New Testament also sees Abraham as an obedient man of God, and Abraham's interrupted attempt to offer up Isaac is seen as the supreme act of perfect faith in God. "By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, 'In Isaac your seed shall be called', concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense." ({{Bibleverse||Hebrews|11:17–19|KJV}}) The imagery of a father sacrificing his son is seen as a [[Typology (theology)|type]] of [[God the Father]] offering [[Son of God|his Son]] on [[Golgotha]].

The traditional view in Christianity is that the chief promise made to Abraham in ''Genesis'' 12 is that through Abraham's seed all the people of earth would be blessed. Notwithstanding this, [[John the Baptist]] specifically taught that merely being of Abraham's seed was no guarantee of salvation.<ref>[[Gospel of Matthew|Matthew]] {{Bibleverse-nb||Matthew|3:1–9|KJV}}</ref> The promise in Genesis is considered to have been fulfilled through Abraham's seed, Jesus. The Roman Catholic Church calls Abraham "our father in Faith", in the [[Eucharistic prayer]] of the [[Roman Canon]], recited during the [[Mass (liturgy)|Mass]] (see [[Abraham in the Catholic liturgy]]). The [[Eastern Orthodox Church]] commemorates him as the "Righteous Forefather Abraham", with two [[feast day]]s in its [[Eastern Orthodox Church liturgical calendar|liturgical calendar]]. The first time is on 9 October (for those churches which follow the traditional [[Julian Calendar]], 9 October falls on 22 October of the modern [[Gregorian Calendar]]), where he is commemorated together with his nephew "Righteous Lot". The other is on the "Sunday of the Forefathers" (two Sundays before Christmas), when he is commemorated together with other [[Genealogy of Jesus|ancestors of Jesus]]. Abraham is also mentioned in the [[Divine Liturgy]] of [[Saint Basil the Great]], just before the Anaphora. Abraham and Sarah are invoked in the prayers said by the priest over a newly married couple at the [[Sacred Mysteries|Sacred Mystery]] of [[Christian views of marriage#View of the Eastern Orthodox Church|Crowning]] (i.e., the Sacrament of Marriage).

It was prophesied to the patriarch Abraham that he would have a son and that his name should be called Isaac. According to [[Martin Noth]], a scholar of the Hebrew Bible, the narratives of Isaac date back to an older cultural stage than that of the West-Jordanian Jacob.<ref name="EoC1-Isaac"/> At that era, the [[Israelite]] tribes were not yet sedentary. In the course of looking for grazing areas, they had come in contact in southern [[Palestine]] with the inhabitants of the settled countryside.<ref name="EoC1-Isaac"/> The biblical historian, A. Jopsen, believes in the connection between the Isaac traditions and the north, and in support of this theory adduces [[Book of Amos|Amos]] 7:9 ("the high places of Isaac").<ref name="EoC1-Isaac"/>
