Terry McCrann
[edit]Hi. I guess almost the last thing I did was put the welcome message on you page before heading off to sleep, whic is why I didn't answer sooner. I assume that this is what you want:
is what I used here.
would also work.
By changing the px number you can make it bigger or smaller but 200 or 250 is probably a good size. I notice that the page you have the picture on has been tagged as not having it's copyright status listed. You need to get that fixed. Where did the picture come from? As to the deleting of the article, well that does happen fast sometimes. What you need to do is to try and set the whole article up beforehand on your own computer. Make sure that you have the categegory(s) and if necessary the stub tags on the article. Also make sure it's Wikified. That is put as much as is possible (and sensible) within the [[, check out Wikipedia:Tutorial and Wikipedia:Tutorial (Formatting). Hope this helps. If you need any more help just leave a message on my talk page. I will be on for the next few days from 0600 - 1300 Coordinated Universal Time. CambridgeBayWeather 18:45, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
- OK if you click on the picture or go to [[:Image:McCrann Terry.jpg:Terry McCrann] you will see that there is a tag about the copyright status of the picture. You need to get it fixed up. I'm not sure what you need to do so I think you will have to try and find an editor that has some idea of copyright info. CambridgeBayWeather 12:46, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
Hi. I deleted Terry McCrann for violating the copyright of the article from which it was clipped. I didn't see any indication it was used with permission. Even if it had been, it would still need a major overhaul, as that is not an encyclopedia article but a promotional blurb. If you want to write something in a more serious and encyclopedic form it almost certainly would not be deleted. -R. fiend 14:27, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
- First of all, you need to avoid copyright violations. This is easily avoided by putting things in your own words, and not doing a cut/paste. It's also important that you keep the article neutral and factual. Avoid superlatives, glowing praise, and anything that really sounds like it was written by the man himself. Also try to keep an encyclopedic tone. ""Will interest rates be cut? Will the dollar fall? Which companies are headed for troubled times?" For more than 20 years Terry has provided critical analysis on these issues and a wide range of events and personalities that have shaped the nation" is not really encyclopedic. Certainly some of that information can be incorporated into the article, but not that way. Finally, it's always best to have more than one source. This is far from always done, but it helps greatly. Good luck. -R. fiend 14:49, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
- Lol. I see the prob. cool, thanks. I'll hopefully get it right next time, although this won't be for a while (with end-year exams, etc. I'm a tad busy now).ZPMMaker 07:34, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
You can just put a speedy tag on it, and someone will be along and delete it. You have to be an admin to delete it yourself. If it keeps getting created enough times that user will probably end up blocked. You could also ask them to stop! Rx StrangeLove 00:41, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Cleanup taskforce
[edit]There are two articles on your taskforce desk (I just added the second).
The new one is Transcience of time. You listed Psychology as an interest and this is an article that the other editors aren't sure is a real psychology term or maybe misnamed. Maybe you can figure it out (the article has been moved to talk:Transcience of time. Otherwise just pass it along.
I put this here because I'm not sure everybody checks there desk as often as I do. Speaking of desks, yours doesn't have the template for the little box that tells the maximum number of open tasks you want. If you want you can tell me the number and I'll set it up for you (I'd just copy it off my desk instead of having to look for the usage details). RJFJR 01:40, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- I added the template for desk size and interests to your desk. You probably want to edit yoru interestes to be clearer. Tables of content appear when there are enough headings for it to need a table of contents, unless it is suppressed. I edited Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/Loung Ung so the heading would be on that page and added a bullet in front of a comment. And I moved the taskforce notice from article to the talk page for Loung Ung. RJFJR 13:50, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
- I just added your name to the list at Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/Are you active? RJFJR 16:14, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
I read the comment you put at talk:Transcience of time. Looks good to me. Thank you for taking the time to work on this article (especially since it was mainly to prove it wasn't about anything). RJFJR 17:06, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
- I put it up for AFD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Transcience of time. RJFJR 14:36, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
How to AFD
[edit]The procedure to nominate an article for deletion is at WP:AFD. Take a look through what has been nominated and how the voting is running before deciding if something should be deleted. (For instance, schools, no matter how trivial, almost never make it through AFD.)
In a few special circumstances an article can be speedied and deleted much quicker than going through AFD. The circumstances and conditions (and the procedure) are at WP:CSD (CSD is an acronym for Candidate for Speedy Deletion).
Hope that helps, RJFJR 14:16, 11 November 2005 (UTC).

Loung Ung (revisited)
[edit]Hey hunter, nice to meet you. A Featured Article usually becomes such after it has been reviewed by peers (Peer Review), perhaps many times, and criticisms have been addressed. Then that person who wishes to will nominate it (Wikipedia:Featured article candidates). It will then be reviewed by very critical members of the Wikipedia community. None of this occurs until those who collaborate on the article feel that it is ready, sort of a consensus, and request Peer Review. At any rate, this article is far from complete, in my opinion. There is still much to be done to bring it to FA status. If you'd like to remove the tag, go right ahead. After all, you put it there, lol :)) --RogerK 02:36, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Your VandalProof Application
[edit]Dear Hunterd/f06-07,
Thank you for applying for VandalProof! (VP). As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact with the new 1.2 version release it has even more power. As such we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. The reason for this is that that you have too few edits in the main article namespace. Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again in the not too distant future. Thank you for your interest in VandalProof. —Xyrael / 19:06, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. I just saw this}. I do not require payment... but I am willing to go halves with you on the work. Unfortuately the reason that I offered the bounty is that I don't have enough Wikitime to bring the main article or the locations article to FA status. Hi, the userbox issue has been a pretty hot potato, and the acceptability of such userboxes has been very hotly debated. I realize that you of course don't really subscribe to whipping people at work, but I feel the joke is a more than a bit insensitive. We don't need to go all that far back in history to find this kind of physical abuse in several countries during the industrial revolution, and I would certainly not be surprised if this brutal practice takes place today.
I want you to compare your box to the climax of the "userbox wars". Someone created a pedophilia userbox ("This user identifies as a pedophile"), and in the aftermath which was promptly deleted. Another user decided to make a parody userbox ("OMG! This user has been attracted to underage females"), which also upset a lot of people. In the end, the fighting which took place over the userbox resulted in two users being temporarily banned and two admins winding up desysopped (three further admins had their adminship restored). The userboxes were of course meant as a joke, but it was a joke in bad taste, and a joke which offended people.
In general, there has been a consensus that userboxes which jokingly promote violence (e.g. "This user thinks pacifists make good target practice") are candidates for speedy deletion, in particular, they meet criterion T1 which Jimbo Wales himself introduced, calling for the deletion of "divisive and inflammatory templates". Several admins and users interpret this criterion very broadly, making it include userboxes which represent a religious or political belief. I personally do not subscribe to such a wide interpretation (indeed I have frequently voted to undelete userboxes which I feel were wrongly deleted), but I do feel that violence boxes (as well as some anti boxes e.g. "This user hates America") are such candidates.
In the case of the Scourge box, I originally did not delete it myself, because T1 is itself rather controversial and quite a lot of grief has arisen from admins deleting userboxes unilaterally. I therefore tagged the userbox for speedy deletion so that another admin could review it, and the speedy delete was confirmed. When you recreated the userbox, I deleted it again, having it confirmed that the box was indeed a T1 candidate. However, since most people don't bother to read userpages, I (reluctantly) decided to allow you to keep the raw code on your userpage. Also, the edit summary you used when recreating the box was... not particularily helpful, calling people "dickheads" does have a tendency to lead to a lot of hard feelings and distress. There are people behind each username, volunteers who donate time and effort to write an encyclopedia, so it's a good thing to be nice to them.
To summarize, I feel that the box you created was made as a good faith joke, but that it was insensitive, and you cannot always expect everyone to get the joke. Userboxes can sometimes be fun, but sometimes it's best to have the fun within your own userspace, and not let it spill over to the "official" namespaces such as Template.
Sorry for a long-winded response, if you have further questions feel free to ask.
Best wishes, Sjakkalle (Check!) 11:32, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

- Hi! I stumbled across the article by accident, while doing some stub sorting, so I took the opportunity to fix other things that could be fixed... bio-stub is reserved for people only; films should be tagged with film-stub or any of the derived stub templates. In fact, I now see that such a template really exists: bio-film-stub - and I just edited the article accordingly... GregorB 12:24, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Equal Measures
[edit]Bugger. I'm sorry that it has been viewed that way, but I was just trying to add relevant details there. Equal Measures is a first season episode of Transformers: Beast Wars. I created it as part of an agrrementbetween myself and another user. Articles like Cheetor and Rattrap have large portions of material in them that are little more than episode summaries that arent really relevant to the character, so we thought it was best if we moved them to a list of Beast Wars episode synopses instead of having the useless info in the articles. Probably shouldn't do it that way in future. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.SMegatron 10:24, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
Don't worry about it. I've just been trying to semi-wikify it and add details as to what it is, infobox, etc. And I get what you say about most people wanting to delete it(can't say I blame them), but its better than having random episode synopses cluttering up the page. Take a look at the differences between Optimus Primal and Cheetor for a good example. The idea was that as soon as we'd gotten that stuff into separate articles we'd clean up the articles to a higher quality. But thanks for your input and your patience. SMegatron 10:41, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
Heh. No argument from me.SMegatron 10:46, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
No worries. I had an abundance of time during that week, which I wasn't expecting, which was why I listed it with the taskforce. Like I said on the Taskforce page, now it just needs some better verification. --Kerowyn Leave a note 09:54, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Episode IV
[edit]Hey, yeah I actually had submitted it for FA status. But their demands are too large at the moment for me to handle while dealing with my real life at the moment. So I withdrew the nomination. Their two large demands were that the article needs a through copyedit, more references, and perhaps more information. I'd greatly appreciate it if you could copyedit the article, as I usually have three great guys to do so. One is on a wikibreak, and one just won't message me back. Would you mind if I messaged you again towards the time that I'm going to nominate the article again for FA status, just to see if you can do another run-through (if I've added more info)? The Filmaker 13:56, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, before you do that. As a side favor, could you run over to this article Pilot (House episode) and copyedit it for me real quick. As you'll see it's very short and I'm working on it to be an FA as well (as we don't have any episode featured articles). Let me know if you have any ideas for more info I can give. The Filmaker 18:49, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hey, not to be a pest, but I'd really appreciate it if you'd run over that article on the House Pilot and spend the five-ten minutes to copyedit before you work on the Episode IV article as I'm done with the Pilot article right. Plus, the Pilot article won't take too long. :) The Filmaker 03:01, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- No offense taken. But which article are you talking about, the Pilot, or the Episode IV article? If you're talking about the Pilot, than I can see this because I'm trying to find as much information as possible. I've spent hours trying to find the original ratings for the episode when it premiered but I keep finding the ratings for the Season Three premiere. Go figure. The Filmaker 14:01, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually IMDb is not paticularly reliable. I only use it occasionally for references. Still, no it does not carry ratings for the paticular episodes of television shows. The Filmaker 22:44, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- So what were you talking about with Pilot when you said you found quite a bit of information to be "omitted". I can't allow alot of the show's general information into the article as the article is specifically about the episode and not the show. This what I've been able to scrap up. Or was there something else you were thinking of when you mentioned this? The Filmaker 02:00, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Copyedit Episode IV
[edit]So dude, I just got done with Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope again. So would you mind copyediting for me before I submit it for FAC? Also, if you have any suggestions for the FAC before I submit, just post them in my talk page or the article's. Thanks. :) The Filmaker 04:38, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- This is the only thing I think I overlooked. If you could insert this into the reaction section, between Ebert's quote and Pauline Kael's quote.
- Vincent Canby called the film "the movie that's going to entertain a lot of contemporary folk who have a soft spot for the virtually ritualized manners of comic-book adventure."[1]
- Hey dude, are you working on the article? I only ask because you said you only had yesterday and the day before to work on it and since you simply uploaded my quote, it implied that you didn't have anything to change in the article (which, yes, I find to be highly unlikely). I'm just a little worried as I'm having a bit of trouble getting people to copyedit for me. So if you could just drop me a message and sooth my worries, I'd appreciate it. :) The Filmaker 02:36, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hello once again, dude. Could you let me know how far you are from completion. I ask because another editor is willing to work on it now, but he's aware that you are working on it. If you're not too far, I can go ahead and let him start. If you're going to be done within the next day or two, I'll have him back off till then. Let me know, and thanks. :) The Filmaker 03:33, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- If that's the case, I'll let you know that I've got a few ancy people who want me to submit the article for FAC. So here's what I'm thinking, Deckiller is really interested in copyediting it. So I'm going to have him copyedit and then I'll submit it for FAC. While it's up for FAC, and when you are able to copyedit at the end of the week. You can copyedit it as well, based off the version that Deckiller has come up with. For your sake, I'll give you a day to send a message and disagree. But I hope you understand, I've been trying to get a copyedit done for close to a month now. And I've been waiting on yours for two weeks. I fully understand that you have your exams to worry about, which you should over this. But because of your exams, I'm going to have Deckiller copyedit and than you can copyedit over his while it's up for FAC. How does that sound? :) The Filmaker 13:45, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

a few questions
[edit]Hey man, thanks for adopting me. How old are you btw? No offense, but your picture makes you look like you are in highschool. Nevertheless, you seem to know how to use the wikipedia format especially well, and I am struggling. A few questions came to mind:
First, how do I archive my talk page when it becomes time to do so?
Second, what software should i get to make editing easier?
Third, how do I upload pictures?
Fourth, how can I make a counter work to see how many edits I have? I have tried a few, but they failed (and now I dont even remember what they were called).
I have more questions but I don't want to burden you right now and perhaps I can figure some of it out on my own. Thanks for your help. PStrait 04:20, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
If I put a "nonsense articles" tag on their talk page, then the user must have created an article that appeared to be nonsensical. It's not showing up in that user's contribution history because it's been deleted. There's no easy way (that I know of) to determine what that deleted article was. I wasn't the only one who left a warning for Magicpoo on that date; note [1] this warning message (erroneously left on the user page instead of the user talk page). Talk pages are for discussing the articles. Your changes showed teh beginnings of a pattern that would compromise the discussion pages. If you want to change your sig dynamically great, (go into preferences select raw and paste this in
"Duke of ,"
).

MedCabal
[edit]Hi, we have a heavy backload of cases at WP:MEDCAB and since you are on the mediator list I thought I would request your help. Thanks! --Ideogram 10:48, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
The best way to learn is to jump right in, but if you want to co-mediate with someone else I'm sure anyone currently mediating a case would be willing. In particular Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2006-11-18 Singapore Changi Airport has already asked for a second mediator. --Ideogram 19:38, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks for offering to help! Firstly, I don't know, maybe it's just me, but that sig using gets awfully long when dealing with subpages (as you can see at the mediation page), I don't suppose you could change it (perhaps if you want to keep it, just for the duration of the case? It'll be weird to see "The Duke of Mediation Cabal/Cases/2006-11-18 Singapore Changi Airport" all the time heh). First thing is we'll have to notify the participants involved. Personally I like to ask them to give their views on the discussion section at the same time. – Chacor 02:06, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- Right now I'm waiting for responses from all the parties. This way we can get a better idea of what the dispute exactly is. – Chacor 05:37, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads-up. I've been fairly busy in real life recently, so haven't had much time to work on the case. I'll have a look, cheers. – Chacor 12:41, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

WP:ADOPT
[edit]Hi there,
As a current Adopter with the Adopt-a-User program there has been some ongoing developments that we would like to bring to your attention.
A new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you may have found useful as an Adopter, as well as recount any experiences that you think may help others. If you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.
Also the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user, on offering adoption please change the Adoptme template to Adoptoffer on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking.
Furthermore numerous Adopters have been adding their details to a list of users available for adopting, to offer a more personalised service and allow new users to browse through and pick their own Adopter. The quickest way to adopt though, is still to contact users at the Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.
Finally - thanks for all your hard work, keep it up - and if you have any general questions or suggestions about the further development of Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User please bring them to our talk page. Cheers Lethaniol 13:52, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Kenny.gif)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Kenny.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Participation Drive
[edit]League of Copyeditors participation drive!
[edit]Dear League member,
We've started a participation drive for the remainder of February. If you can, please help clear the backlog by adopting the following goals each week:
- Select an article to copy-edit from the backlog. After your copy-edit, list the article in the articles ready for final proofread section.
- Select a different article to proofread from the articles ready for final proofread section.
Thanks for your help! Rintrah 09:36, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies
[edit]Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of unassessed articles tagged with WPBiography. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. Thank you! --Ozgod 20:52, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Everybody needs a break sometimes, and that might go for WikiProjects as well. But the WP:Biography newsletter is back from its hiatus, and the project is healthier than ever. With more than 250 active members and upwards of 20 admins, we are one of the biggest projects on wikipedia. But size doesn't matter - or so they say. The true measure of a wikiproject is how much it contributes to the betterment of wikipedia. Which means adding your name to the rolls wasn't enough. If you haven't already, it's time to step up and help out the project. Volunteer. Contribute. So take a look at the to-do list in this newsletter, and let's get going. If you've just joined, add your name to the Members section of Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy! Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 2 – April 2007). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Wikiproject Actors and Filmakers
[edit]Hey see my proposals at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Actor and Filmmakers and the main WP Film and Biography talk page. Know anybody who is interested? Actors and all film people articles need a body on wikipedia to upkeep them asthey need more focus -it would be a part of Biogrpahy and Film. If you are interested or know somebody who would be, please let them know and whether you think it is a good progession for the project or not. Please leave your views at the council or biogrpahy main talk page. THanks ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 14:48, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
The article is inching towards an FA status and is being reviewed for a second time by peers. But, it still needs much copyedit (especially with citation template and dating web citations). A wholesomely coherent style of English and a completely cohesive flow of the article is mightily required at this point. I have also tagged the article for sopyedit, and have posted a request with Wikipedia:WikiProject League of Copyeditors. Please, help. Aditya Kabir 16:08, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Since the last newsletter, through the efforts of multiple bots and all who participated in the Spring Assessment Drive, the project has expanded greatly and at the time of writing encompasses over 350,000 articles, just over 1/5 of the whole of Wikipedia - something to be proud of? However, almost half of these are marked as stubs, and only with the continued effort of us, the 300 and those not part of the project can all of these articles be improved - though as statistics show, this is already happening... If you've just joined, add your name to the Members section of Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy! Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (May 2007). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!
Would all members who are also admins, and who have a reasonable understanding of advanced template syntax, please ensure that they have WPBiography on their watchlist? The template is fully protected now.

The newsletter is back! Many things have gone on during the past few months, but many things have not. While the assessment drive helped revitalize the assessment department of the project, many other departments have received no attention. Most notably: peer review and our "workgroups". A day long IRC meeting has been planned for October 13th, with the major focus being which areas of the project are "dead", what should our goals be as a project, and how to "revive" the dead areas of our project. Contribute to the discussion on the the new channel (see below) We decided to deliver this newsletter to all project members this month but only those with their names down here will get it delivered in the future. This is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue. Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned or post news on the next issue's talk page
Lastly, a new WikiProject Biography channel has been set up on the freenode network: Our thanks to Phoenix 15 for setting it up.

hi
[edit]League of Copyeditors roll call | |
Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there. The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors. |

WikiProject Stargate
[edit]You're listed as one of our contributors, but recent inactivity in the project has led us to be rather short on mottos. Currently, the schedule only has mottos up to August 12th, and that's only because I just spent half an hour or so filling them in! In order to make sure the project doesn't fold in, we need your help coming up with ideas for new mottos, commenting on active proposals, closing finished submissions, and your input on a new proposal to re-use some of our older mottos when we run out of new ones. Hundreds of editors see our mottos every day; if you can, please take some time out of your normal editing and drop by to help the project out. Thanks for your time. - Indeed, seek oversight, and in the future ask one person instead of many if you can't find the answer. Andre (talk) 05:45, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
- One easy way to do that is to email User:Oversight. Angela. 07:30, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Your signature
[edit]It's a cute trick, but it is rather confusing, and could be seen as impersonating. Do you think you could switch it off, please? --Dweller (talk) 09:56, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- Doubt it. If consensus agrees, I will, but until then, there is no policy preventing me from doing this (as far as I am aware...) and so I shall not. If you want to organize a vote, feel free to have anyone in support of my changing my signature immediately below this message. Ta. The Duke of Hunterd 11:35, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- Don't take it personally, but I completely agree with Dweller's criticism. Consider that your message on my (Tapatio's) talk page was signed "Duke of Tapatio." What am I supposed to think of that? Tapatio (talk) 15:14, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- Consider it done. :) Hunterd is back! 20:00, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, no! I'm going to miss the cleverest signature around. It's nice of you to be so accommodating, though. Best wishes! GreenGourd (talk) 00:25, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Geophys
[edit]Regarding the difficulties applying geophysics to Australian archaeology you mentioned in Talk:Geophysical survey (archaeology):
I realize that in most places GPR, Mag and Res. are the most common techniques. However, down here in Australia, geology significantly limits the use of these techniques. This is particularly true for where most of my work is done... in the state of Victoria. There's a lot of clay (GPR is out in most places), it's all volcanic rock (Mag is out), and with the current drought, there's very little water in the ground (Res is out)! I realize that this is an extreme irregularity, but the more experimental techniques (as you would call them) are basically what my career will rely on.
Your situation is not irregular at all. In North America, we face a very great diversity of physical environments, and the conditions you mention would be typical of much of the western US. The same could be said for the Middle East. What we have found is that these dificult conditions can often be overcome with an adaptive approach based on a thorough understanding of the archaeological record and the physical environment, and of the way both are expressed in geophysical data. Often the results may not make a pretty picture, but can yield information relevant to archaeological questions. In other cases, it is probably best to accept that your archaeological questions might best be answered with non-geophysical approaches.
I would not categorically say that mag is out in areas of volcanic/igneous geology; in some cases I have had outstanding results. I have used resistance with at least intermittent success in very arid conditions. If you really can't use res, conductivity may work. How about susceptibility?
In any case, It is always a challenge to adapt to site-specific conditions, and it has taken decades here to adapt geophysical methods to environments and an archaeological record very different from those found in Britain and Europe. Tapatio (talk) 17:27, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
