Etymology

edit

Inherited from Old Czech kól, from Proto-Slavic *kolъ. Probably connected with *kolti (to chop), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kálˀtei, originally from Proto-Indo-European *kel-.[1]

edit
  • IPA(key): [ˈkuːl]
  • Hyphenation: kůl

  3. (volleyball, slang) post supporting the net
    Synonym: sloupek
