Etymology

edit

Perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *gwel- (dwelling-place, hole), and cognate with Latvian guōļa (nest, lair). Outside of Baltic, compare Old Armenian կաղաղ (kałał, hole, hiding-place) and perhaps Ancient Greek γωλεός (gōleós, hole).[1]
