Etymology
editEpenthetic variant of the earlier granciu. Possibly from an Occitan and/or Norman stratum, because of the palatalization and sonorization of the initial /k-/ sound. Ultimately from Latin cancer, cancrum (“crab”). Cognate with Catalan cranc/carranc, Occitan cranc, Galician cáncaro, (cángaro, cancro, cangrio), French chancre, Spanish cangrejo, Portuguese carango, Italian granchio, Venetian cancaro. Doublet of agranciu.
