Etymology

From Middle Low German duchtig, from Old Saxon *duhtig, from Proto-West Germanic *duhtīg, cognate with German tüchtig, Dutch duchtig, English doughty. Derived from the noun *duhti (“fitness”) (cf. German Tucht), a noun from the verb Proto-Germanic *duganą (“to be useful”), cf. Danish du.
