Lappi
See also: lappi
Finnish
editEtymology
editFrom Lappa- + -i (compare lappalainen). There are two main theories on the origin of this word:[1]
- Swedish lapp (“patch”), as a calque of a Sami endonym vuowjoš (seemingly derived from the same word whence also Lule Sami vuojvve (“patch (of textile), gusset”))
- related to lape, (dialectal) lappea, originally in the meaning "remote place" (compare Moksha лапш (lapš), Erzya лапужа (lapuža, “flat”))
Pronunciation
editProper noun

- Any of a number of small places in Finland outside Lapland (named for ancient Sami residence).
