editEtymology
editFirst attested as hemsere in 1210. Etymology unclear. Tentative etymologies include a compound of Old Dutch eem (“water”) and heri (“sandy ridge”) and a derivation from Proto-Germanic *Amizwari (“people of the Eems”). The mid-word -t- is a later insertion.
