Etymology

Borrowed from Classical Persian اَشْرَفِی (ašrafī)[1] with the metathesis of Classical Persian /ɾ/ and /a/,[2] from Arabic أَشْرَفِيّ (ʔašrafiyy). First attested in c. 1769 as Middle Hindi اشرفی (aśrfy).[3]
