Etymology
editThe origin is unknown.
Čubinov compares with Georgian კოპი (ḳoṗi, “bump, lump on head; rawhide thong”).
Hiwnkʿearpēyēntean derives from the verb կափուցանեմ (kapʻucʻanem, “to cover, shut, close”).
Bugge posits earlier *կողպ- (*kołp-), inherited from Proto-Indo-European and cognate with Bulgarian клепа́ч (klepáč, “eyelid”), кле́пка (klépka, “eyelash; eyelid”), Old Church Slavonic по-клопъ (po-klopŭ, “lid”), Ancient Greek κόλπος (kólpos), Proto-Germanic *hwalfą.
Patrubány (apud Ačaṙean) and J̌ahukyan 1967 connect with Ancient Greek σκέπω (sképō), σκεπάζω (skepázō, “to cover; to protect”), σκέπας (sképas, “covering, shelter”), Lithuanian kepùrė (“cap”), Russian чепе́ц (čepéc, “cap”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (“to cover”).
J̌ahukyan 1987 lists the word among the unetymologized i-stem nouns for which an Urartian origin can be sought.
According to J̌ahukyan 2010, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeh₁bʰ- and related to կապ (kap) and կափ- (kapʻ-).
Ačaṙean leaves the origin open. The problem with the Indo-European proposals is that they assume irregular consonant shifts for Armenian.
