Inherited from Old East Slavic володѣти (voloděti), from Proto-Slavic *volděti (to rule), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *walˀdā́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁dʰh₁-, from *h₂welh₁- (to rule). Doublet of владе́ть (vladétʹ), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic. Cognates include Ukrainian володі́ти (volodíty).
