Cognate with Old Saxon sweƀan, Old English swefn (English sweven); the Indo-European root also led to Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos), Latin somnus, Old Irish (deprecated template usage) suan, Old Church Slavonic съпати (sŭpati) (Russian спать (spatʹ)), Latvian sapnis.
