Dutch

Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Dutch (deprecated template usage) ruuch, (deprecated template usage) ru, (deprecated template usage) rou, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Dutch *(deprecated template usage) rūh, *(deprecated template usage) , from Template:proto. The original stem ended in -h-, which disappeared between vowels, giving *(deprecated template usage) rū- in the inflected forms in Old Dutch. This then gave rise to an alternative uninflected form *(deprecated template usage) , which developed into Middle Dutch (deprecated template usage) ru, (deprecated template usage) rou, modern Dutch (deprecated template usage) ruw, (deprecated template usage) rouw. The original uninflected form was back-formed to (deprecated template usage) ruig based on other words with -ch in the uninflected form and -g- in inflected forms, similar to what happened to (deprecated template usage) hoog.
