The original stem ended in ''-h-'', which disappeared between vowels, giving {{m\|odt\|rū-}} in the inflected forms in Old Dutch. This then gave rise to an alternative uninflected form {{m\|odt\|rū}}, which developed into Middle Dutch {{m\|dum\|ru}}, {{m\|dum\|rou}}, modern Dutch {{m\|nl\|ruw}}, {{m\|nl\|rouw}}.
