===Etymology===
From {{inh|nl|dum|ruuch}}, {{m|dum|ru}}, {{m|dum|rou}}, from {{inh|nl|odt|*rūh}}, {{m|odt|*rū}}, from {{inh|nl|gem-pro|*rūhaz}}, {{m|gem-pro|*rūhwaz}}.
The original stem ended in ''-h-'', which disappeared between vowels, giving {{m|odt|*rū-}} in the inflected forms in Old Dutch. This then gave rise to an alternative uninflected form {{m|odt|*rū}}, which developed into Middle Dutch {{m|dum|ru}}, {{m|dum|rou}}, modern Dutch {{m|nl|ruw}}, {{m|nl|rouw}}. The original uninflected form was back-formed to {{m|nl|ruig}} based on other words with ''-ch'' in the uninflected form and ''-g-'' in inflected forms, similar to what happened to {{m|nl|hoog}}. ===Pronunciation===
