Hi Erkan,

I've noticed that you've been using the UTC time on your userpage I've just transfered the coding to a Template page Template:Time the coding is the same and nothing's been changed but it'll probably neaten the userpage and it maybe useful to some user's. Terra 12:27, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Section 56

edit

Hi Erkan,

I've Changed Section 56 - on the talkpage you've asked for an updated version, and I've changed the writing is there any improvements you think I should do to it, if you want you can change some of text. Terra 19:17, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
It seems more shortened than before. And I still wonder a little about the name, because a name should be significant and tell already about the coming content. Anyway, have fun with it - that is what makes contributers stay longer here - it is a wiki. ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 12:53, 26 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Erkan, Do you know if its possible to make this: German WB/WV flyer as an internal link? (I mean, not with plain links). i.e., is there a way to do interwiki-interlanguage links? e.g., something like... de.wikibooks:Wikibooks:Wikibooks_bekannter_machen/_weitere_Vorschläge#Aushang German WB/WV flyer PS. I like the flyer! Can we translate to English? What is the format? -- Jtneill - Talk 14:26, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

The link would be then: German WB/WV flyer (for all wikimedia projects you can see the abbreviation code e.g. here: Main Page/Sisterprojects 0.5).
The texts on de.WB are also on GFDL, so translation should be allowed, if you keep to the GFDL terms. But the flyers itself maybe under another licence (you can check this on the flyer then).
the format is svg, if you ask b:de:Benutzer:heuler06 he will send you the svg file. I have an older version which I also could send you ? ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 15:20, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Probationary Custodian

edit

Hi I was wondering if I could become a custodian on a trial? Businesslawyer 13:48, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Some may consider it as spamming yes but it wasnt meant for that. I have created a page about it but I havent finished it yet. At scribblewiki I hope to have it as successful as the wiki foundation. I am in the process of adding and creating the templates for it. I hope to have this done by the end of August and it will be a fully functional website. I am looking to recruit users that is why I was creating articles and also telling people about it on their talkpages. As for wikiversity I want to revert vandalism and also block users who are messing around and breaking the policy. I really want to become a Custodian. Businesslawyer 14:04, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Chats

edit

Hi Erkan - no, the chats I organised didn't materialise - mainly due to my rushed time suggestion in the end. Only JWS turned up explicitly aware of and interested in a chat - we just chatted informally instead (and also with others who turned up at either time I suggested). However, I'd like to organise one - better, with feedback - and soon(ish). I've just been busy with a paper recently - hence my lack of participation - but that's done now. Talk to you soon... Completition status tags

edit

Heh, this project looks like Wikibooks. Where are the advantages and what is the aim?--Juan 07:08, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I guess you reference about Category:Completed resources ? Well, I would like that the knowledge about a learning resource gets from the individual's heads into WV (this saves time when searching). Recent example: someone visited de.WV chat and asked for some reference courses at de.WV - but I only gave him the ones I knew about. The other ones which I didn't know about so good I couldn't give. So for me a categorization helps to find something better - at least better than before being uncategorized. Now atm there is discussion ongoing between participants at en.WV how to classify. Of course some things can't be classified good/correct/enough. But any categorizatino/classification can be changed afterwards (even if you classify it with - "not categorized"). People should not forget: we are a wiki and that changes. ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) PS: Tag a learning project with completion status !! 23:35, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: beta wiki closure

edit

Hi Erkan, what I meant was that the vote doesn't seem to be attracting any new comments/votes, and it's clearly in heavy favour of a "keep". I just thought that site notice was too cluttered - you can reinstate it if you feel it's best. Cormaggio talk 18:48, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merci for the explanation. Since the proposal's time has not yet ended and we are not sure that on the last day more people show up who support the closure of beta I am putting it back. Hello again. I had a few queries regarding categorizing:

  • What is its purpose?
  • How is it done? (subcategories too)
  • How can I check that pages in my school are categorized correctly?

I am willing to wait for the answers as I am aware these may require detailed answers. Go raibh mile maith agaibh 09:05, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

to
1: What is the purpose of categories?
2: How do I add an article to a category? (also that page in total gives a lot of info), also see Wikiversity:Categories
3: What means "correctly" ? In my view that is relative. Someone may like it more abstract, someone more detailed, someone wouldn't add it to a certain category I would add, ... Mostly I'd say by qualitative analysis and if you see after 5 years nobody changed it, it may be a sign that it is "correct" or people didn't bother to "fix" it :-) Though I am sure that there are also tools to help you with (on commons for files there is a tab called "find categories" - see e.g. here). ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 16:49, 18 June 2008 (UTC)----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 16:49, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your answers to numbers 1 and 2. I found the answer to 3 already but i worded he question wrongly. I just wanted to know if you are reading an article could you tell what categories it belonged to. I know now that you can. How are you doing?--Daanschr 18:04, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am ok. A bit stressed by my job at the moment. Thought that working with people for 40 hours a day would improve my life. But i realize that social contact only matters when there is deep sympathy. Something that lacks in a common working place. I think i miss the school where i worked three months ago. The job was boring and sometimes hard, but there certainly were great rewards, something that i miss entirely in my present job. Don't know what to do now. I think i stimulated one of my colleagues to stop working here as well. She wants to live at a beach on the Dutch Carribean island Bonaire where she went on holiday. Which is much better that working your ass of at a Dutch ministry (of the government).--Daanschr 18:16, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The history atlas didn't went well. I had less enthusiasm about it than earlier on. It has to do with previous examples of when i tried to start something up. The lack of participance was a major problem. SB_Johnny and JWSchmidt want to restart my first project w:Wikipedia:WikiProject organized debate. I am much more positive about that project. Especially because it is focused at little rewards and a long startup of decades. A debate will be announced a year in advance. So, everything is slow and hopefully solid because of it. An idea behind it was that some political parties in Holland and Belgium took 30 years to become a success. Take the Socialist Party, it was founded in the late 1960s and now after 35 years 1 in 6 Dutch voted for it. A very long startup period, but with an idea that had a good chance to work.--Daanschr 18:41, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Issue of Concern

edit

I was roaming through the uncategorized pages and this page is causing me concern as it sounds like medical advice. Diabetes is a serious illness and I don't think this site should be involved in providing medical advice. I don't know the entire policies just yet but I think this should be removed. Do you agree? Donek (talk) - Go raibh mile maith agaibh 22:57, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't think a disclaimer would properly cover us for this sort of material. Even if we were covered, the publicity from an unfortunate event relating to advice would be detrimental to our reputation. I would like to remove the entire content now, but maybe keep the page. I can edit later after the other things I want to do. The main concern is that it refers to the reader in the second person as if the reader has diabetes. I know it's not very wiki to delete original content, but we have an ethical duty to remember that people can reach that page without reading the disclaimer via a search engine or other directions. Donek (talk) - Go raibh mile maith agaibh 23:13, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I looked up what you meant by argument but i am none the wiser. Are suggesting that we put it up for debate, that the auhor was just suggesting a different perspective or something else. Excuse my ignorance :) Donek (talk) - Go raibh mile maith agaibh 23:26, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Starting a course for my students with wikiversity

edit

hi erkan i would ike to put together a course on wikiversity. i have read through all the basics and it seems very interesting but i am still unsure how to begin and how precisely the course would operate. Some guidance would be really appreciated.

Since I have now not so much info about what you read and what the course is about, let's try this:
  • If you like you can create an account so others can msg you on your talk page (which is fixed, not in some cases varies with an IP).
  • About operating: that depends totally on your context - there is no general formula, but you could have a look how others approached this - some have given here also feedback: Wikiversity:School and university projects. You can roll the ball here by editing a page or creating a new one: Wikiversity:Adding content. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, anything can be reverted or page names moved, ...
  • Probably not all of your questions are answered yet (since I can't read your mind), so feel free to ask. In general it is advisable to ask not only one person but many, so you could write also at the Wikiversity:Colloquium and I personally advise the Wikiversity:Chat since you might get interactive responses. Using the Search function on the left side might also helpful.
  • I gues smost of the times the initial start is the most difficult, so here I say: shoot your questions or use the chat - I am there today at least for another hour. ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 20:55, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just in case, ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 20:57, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Erkan

Briefly, we would like to create a system with interactive study, each individual at his / her own pace, effectively teaching themselves all about Judaism. The student chooses what they want. A questionnaire will analyze what their motivation is to learn - became religious and want to understand, no Jewish background but want to study, want to study and not have to commit etc and offer tracks based on their needs.

Each track is then studied in a particular semester so that a social networking group can form around a topic, be it Jewish history, philosophy, learning hebrew, how to learn Talmud or relationships. The group is moderated by a professional mentor.

Interactive technology is employed in the form of videos, audio, text, animation, assignements, projects etc.

The challenge now is that the amount of data needed is tremendous and we also need to obtain the information in presentable structured format. To pay people to do it would be far too expensive and unrealistic. Enter the idea of a wiki. If we could somehow muster the power of people out there to enter the information into wikis, we could hope to end up with a very comprehensive database.

The question is how to motivate people to write and to transfer the info from tacit knowledge into implicit knowledge. Also, why would someone want to contribute to such a wiki?

A possible solution is wikiversity - each individual enters their talks, stories, articles, video lectures, maybe even animations and we have this huge database. But it would not yet be useable. We nned the wikipedia style of people contributing to central article that have all the info. And we have to recognize their contributions through some kind of ranking and loyalty system.

Whatever the case, once this is done comes the first part, which is a navigation system for people wanting to learn.

That is the idea we have thus far in brief. As you can see it is still very raw and we would like some professional input.

I value your input.

Thank you for the additional input. Some links regarding this I'd like to offer is:
Since religious topics get sometimes controversial I'd also recommend strongly these pages (if you like add your opinions):
>We nned the wikipedia style of people contributing to central article that have all the info. And we have to recognize their contributions through some kind of ranking and loyalty system.
Could you be more specific here what you mean ? Contributions by anybody can always be seen over a special link (e.g. yours) and users can mention on e.g. their user pages to which learning content they contributed etc. In general: Wikiversity differs in some ways from Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects, see e.g. w:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-05-09/Wikiversity interview, here, Wikiversity:What shall we do with Wikipedia?
>professional input.
Well, I am not a professional, I am - as you - a contributor here who uses this wiki, but I can share my opinion. It'd be nice if you could create a user account (then also IPs are not obvious) and present yourself/your group and your ideas there also, so future participants you interact with can find this info and you don't have to retype. I will put this also in the Colloquium so you get more input.
So, where are now then ? I'd say start a learning resource and let's see in practice how it looks like and how this wiki can help you to flow to the learning experience. ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 22:01, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Elections

edit

Hi Erkan. I think we need an uninvolved bureaucrat to take a look at our custodian elections and declare Gbaor's a success and Terra's a "not-at-this-time-please-try-again-later". Or does your bureaucratic sense of consensus see it differently? --McCormack 15:59, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Account

edit

Hi Erkan,

I've gone ahead and created my new account which I requested per changing username request, will it be possible if you could erase all of my userpage and subpages on my Terra account, I'll no-longer be using it - especially on Wikipedia, if you need confirmation I'll respond to this comment on my new username account. Terra 09:18, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hello Terra, for deletions on WP please ask an admin there. Just to make sure, your deletion request that would be these pages in total then:
Terra
Terra/Awards
Terra/Global-Borders
Terra/New Pages
Terra/Recent Changes
Terra/Sandbox
Terra/Updates
Terra/UserBoxes
Terra/Userpage Template
Terra/archivemessage
Terra/monobook.js
Terra/signatures
What shall we do with the talk + archive pages ? see [2], ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 17:59, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Please erase them, including the talkpage & archives, I'm now under a new username which I requested to use on the Changing Username page. Terra 18:34, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Even it is your personal name space, I dont think so it is a good idea to delete talk pages as other people also edited them and you should ask them if they agree with deletion. Remember also, that deleting your user page doesnt mean killing and acount so it will be still in here. Maybe, you can just vanished your userpage and place there a template or note, that it is not active any more.--Juan 08:05, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Terra, please put the deletion template at the pages you want.
In general, if you want to start fresh here, just forget the actions in the past (account Terra and others) - continue as you would like with the new account, ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 08:18, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Due to Juan's comment I've decided to leave a redirect link to my new username. Erkan, please don't erase the subpages on my Terra account as in the future I may need to look at them for reference - as to what went wrong previously., and hopefully I won't make that same mistake again Terra 18:24, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Horbury high school

edit

Yes this is a real school, coincidently it isn't far from my hometown, although there isn't a Wikipedia article about it. However, per What Wikiversity is not, content that is effectively an encyclopedia article should be on Wikipedia. I would suggest that this has probably been posted here by mistake and was probably intended for Wikipedia. Adambro 20:50, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Erkan,

I am having doubts about the topic. I think it would be better for the project if we learn about something other than learning itself. Also, wiki-related learning is better served, if the learning is on something other than learning on a wiki. It might be that we can get a large participance, but i don't think that those who attend will be interested in learning about something other than learning itself. My idea behind this project is to get people interested to move from one topic to another and to spend lots of time in the process in order to gain an in-depth understanding of a topic.--Daanschr 16:31, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am trying to think of a topic, that we both might enjoy.

I read a book for my studies about France during the enlightenment. An oppressive society with absolute state rule based on a strong army and church slowly transformed into a liberal state. The state tried to use coercion, but that didn't work and had to give way.

Maybe we can do a topic related to German romanticism. Especially the cosmopolitan kind. Or maybe the British poet Byron, or Shakespeare.

Or maybe something completely different.--Daanschr 16:53, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Daan, it is a wiki and we will see what people want - probably will take more than 1 chat session to find this out.
As topics: let's see what we can come up with on Saturday - I have here already two topics I want to finish still: Thucydides and the Three Kingdoms :-( ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 17:59, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

What if we read Thucydides in a different way? We will both read the rest of the text and than we talk about it and edit some articles on Wikipedia. Than we will have finished Thucydides and will be able to move to another subject. Or choose a subject related to Thucydides?--Daanschr 20:09, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

We could talk about that also on Saturday. After the progress we made would be a waste to not continue. ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 21:08, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I will eat with my family this evening. Perhaps we can chat now, or tomorrow?--Daanschr 12:28, 19 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
