Thanks for your interesting description of Elliott Fitch Shepard on the Signpost! I did want to point out, however, that the Fifth Avenue Stage Company was a stagecoach business. Shepard didn't want stagecoaches running on Fifth Ave on Sundays (presumably especially because his house was on Fifth Ave).--ɱ (talk · vbm) 15:31, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ha! Thanks for that. I assumed too much! It did seem a bit odd, though, to have a company specialising in stage machinery operation! Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 17:23, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

AJF

edit

Hi Xanthomelanoussprog, Thank you for looking into this.

About Dina- Dina received her MFA in illustration, but she has worked for the past several years at an art jewelry gallery. Her work there was a crash course in art jewelry, and she eventually was hired by AJF for certain writings (usually donation requests and things of that nature). Most of the actual content AJF publishes is written by art historians, curators, professors, and makers. Art jewelry (or jewellery for the europeans) certainly is an incredibly small field that has clung to analog ways for far too long (probably due in part because EVERYTHING about our field is so physical). Personally, as someone who was trained both as a metalsmith and art historian, I am acutely aware of the problems that our field now faces. I am personally invested in helping digitize the field in order to help preserve it for the future. I started with AJF because I felt like they had one of the strongest cases; they are an incredibly respected and influential non profit in our field. The content they publish both online and in print only has a few competitors (friends?), mainly Metalsmith Magazine, American Crafts, and Current Obsession. As someone who teaches both metalsmithing studio classes and design history at a University level, I know how important these publications are to not only myself, but to my students education. AJF publications are widely used in academia. I am starting to become really frustrated that there is such a gap between what we as a field know, and what I can prove to Wikipedia..... Clarefinin (talk) 22:10, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

It's not that small a field! A local auction house here managed to sell two brooches (or, for the Americans, pins) for $58,000 each (including commission). The designer of the brooches has their own featured article, but not an article on their jewellery. Hint. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 08:19, 12 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wood in Beer

edit

Hi are you sure about this? It doesn't seem to be in the article. ϢereSpielChequers 20:31, 13 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Step 6 on the Budweiser site's explanation of the brewing process; unfermented wort is added to the brew for an extra fermentation to carbonate it, and then it's aged on beechwood chips for 21 days to "mature the flavor of the beer". So ostensibly a bit like storing red wine in oak barrels, to add an oaky flavor note. Mmm… beechwood Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 20:53, 13 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
OK so the ingredients include rice and a trace of wood, but where I come from if you say something is made from x and y you expect that those will be the principal if not sole ingredients. "Ingredients included rice and wood" would be true and probably have the quirkiness the signpost is presumably looking for. Equally with the prizes, there may well be a case of bud in addition to $198,000 but the money is the more important bit, the case of bud doesn't seem to be in the article. ϢereSpielChequers 21:14, 13 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
$198,550. I should have put that figure in, as the precision of it tickled me. As the race is "designed to promote Busch Beer" there's probably quite a few cases involved! I had a bottle a couple of days back, sweet with a hint of honey. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 21:46, 13 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Do anything you want. What I would like to do is to do something more on the Capon chapel and also Simpson, but I'll need to do some thinking. I can't think of anything to say about Goya's goat. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 19:10, 21 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
That goat is difficult, no? How about something like: Goya was a peculiar artist who in his paintings mocked the clerical institutions and ridiculed the stereotypes of witches and their grotesque side of their festivities and ceremonies. He used grotesque figures that he made to look even more with the use of the lose brushwork, the grotesque faces provides a scary, frenzied, atmosphere to his pictures. Or something like that.... --Hafspajen (talk) 19:18, 21 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • About Jeves..."As you wish sir" to Bertie, but behind the mask he is pulling the strings, most often succeeding to put poor Bertie in an even bigger mess, thanks to his sightly sinister machinations, than Bertie originally got himself into.
I know what the article' say, but actually Jeves is quite often gets Bertie quite in a mess, while he is so called solving the trouble .... And Jeves is rather rude, in fact. Dunno if you noticed, but he gets him in quite a bit of troube. Bertie he often loses out on Jeves sightly sinister machinations, like he has to pay a lot, and is generally is getting quite in a bit of trouble before things are fixed and such.
Everybody is sooo impressed by Jeves, but if you read the stories, (I suppose you did, I guess) then you notice that he is rather mean, and rather unreliable. Hafspajen (talk) 12:35, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Okay, changed it. I watched the series but haven't read the books (same as Mapp and Lucia). I rescued someone's journal yesterday from a junk market; he was a student 1953-1955 at Queen's College, Cambridge. The ones I have are the coloured one-inch 3rd series so on a smaller scale. The archive maps look as if they've been scanned from poor-quality photostats- the centre of Weston is quite a mess! I think the originals would have been engraved on copper sheets and transferred to steel plates for printing. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 11:14, 1 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Okay, here's what I've done, in case you need to do this in future. It took 20 minutes, and only needed the bot's laid content to make work.

  • Copy list into Notepad. Search replace "* <b>[[:" for nothing.
  • Search replace "]]</b>" for "<br />"
  • Add "<gallery mode=packed heights=225px>" at the top, and "</gallery>" at the bottom
  • Put into FP section after "Twenty-one featured pictures were promoted this week." There should be nothing else besides this in the FP section.
  • Save.
  • Have a copy of the gallery to look at open as you do the editing in the next step.
  • The captions are the name of the nomination. THEY WILL NEED CLEANED UP, THIS WILL NOT TAKE LONG, BUT IS NOT OPTIONAL. Replace all captions of the form "Obvious filename.jpg" with an appropriate caption. Sometimes just removing ".jpg" and a few other words will get a decent caption, other times you'll have to check by clicking on the image.
  • Add links to all captions, usually just by putting brackets around appropriate phrases. Don't worry - you can fix any redlinks later
  • Add any necessary italics to captions.
  • Save, review gallery once more. Fix any redlinks.

CDDG Page regarding Neutrality and Deletion

edit

Dear,

I have made sure to cite almost every single line on the page of CDDG. Can you please let me know what is the process required to remove the mark for deletion note and the dispute of neutrality. Your help is greatly appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wissamraji (talkcontribs) 07:41, 16 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Wissamraji. The deletion review hasn't been closed yet (it has to be closed by an administrator) so the note shouldn't be removed. The disputed neutrality notice is perhaps due to you being seen as connected with the CDDG- i.e. you will have a conflict of interest between serving the interests of the organisation and writing an article about them on Wikipedia. The article is then seen as promotion or advertising. Also bear in mind that the article should be explanatory- you've listed various projects, but the CDDG members are not the ones funding the projects, or physically working on them (as far as I know). But explanatory using reliable secondary sources (what someone not a member of the organisation and who is a reliable narrator has written about the CDDG). I've posted on Drmies' page asking for other editors to give their input so hopefully you'll have some further opinions on the matter. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 08:01, 16 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

CDDG Page

edit

Dear Xanthomelanoussprog,

I read your comments with the other editor about our page and about our organization. Yes, we are a small organization with 21 members and not 12 and I am the president who is actively involved in the wikipedia page. I never mentioned in the table that we funded the projects but rather I am mentioning the funding sources. I believe Dremeis is taking the issue personally since my last edits on Samir Geagea page and how I challenged a sentence that is not true there. What more citations do anyone need for our projects. I am citing each and every project and using Google translate or any other translation program, one can easily see our involvement as technical assistance in the projects. we are an NGO that supports technical assistance of projects given by major donors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wissamraji (talkcontribs) 12:50, 17 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Dear Wissam Raji

I apologise for the tone of my comments- the problem is not with your organisation but that all articles must be derived (in the main) from reliable secondary sources. Otherwise it would be easy for a commercial organisation or for an individual (such as a writer or artist) to use Wikipedia for their own promotion. For example Lebanese Forces had a section on its navy, which had a strong element of propaganda (I tried to rectify this). Drmies has to deal with a lot of these types of promotion, so he has a jaundiced view! I don't know about the Samir Geagea page- I have had a look at the source. It says "Asiri also praised Geagea for holding a news conference in which he defended statements by the Saudi Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh, who said it was religiously legitimate to destroy churches in Kuwait because the Arab Peninsula should not see a "meeting of two religions.”" There's two parts to this: Asiri wrote a letter in which he praised Geagea for defending statements by the Mufti. Secondly the Mufti said it was religiously legitimate to destroy churches. It doesn't follow that Geagea defended that statement- it would be better to go to a report of the news conference. I can't see that the ambassador would include that in his letter. p.s. don't forget to "sign" your messages with four tildes "~". It will automatically generate a signature. Hi, you just need to quote from reliable secondary sources (even one will do- an industry newsletter or periodical, and not something published by your company) with a reference. You will have a problem with Conflict of interest though if you are working for or with the company. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 15:57, 6 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Does this article meet the guidelines of being a reliable secondary source? http://www.bighospitality.co.uk/Business/La-Tasca-and-Soho-House-appoint-CVS-to-carry-out-business-rates-appeals-ahead-of-huge-hikes Sirdreamer (talk) 14:09, 9 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Doesn't look too bad- although I suspect the source of the information is a press release from CVS. On the other hand, the info's going to be accurate- however the bit about "new research from CVS" regarding delays in processing business rates appeals costing hotels £13 million might be a guesstimate on the part of the company- according to Hotel Magazine there's 45,000 hotels in Britain- I doubt CVS contacted them all! Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 17:37, 9 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi, it does look like a press release and I agree with your reservations about the research! I will keep looking for an article. I have found a resource which I think would be perfect but it's part of an online magazine so doesn't have a direct URL. Would this suffice? Sirdreamer (talk) 10:39, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
You mean the magazine is a PDF? In the end (and this is off the top of my head as it were!) it's just a matter of helping the reader to find the original source- thus "it came from such-and-such magazine, issue XX, page YY. Try the various citation templates, which are in a drop-down menu at the top of the editing window- you have a sandbox which can be used for experimenting. I can't see a problem myself with using CVS press releases, as it's probably not an area where there's going to be a lot written about the subject by third parties. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 11:07, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I will add the above citation is as a reference. Will you see my resubmission? Thanks Sirdreamer (talk) 13:17, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Had a brief look- will look again tonight. The firm not only does business rates but also assists in negotiating lease terms for occupiers of commercial premises and reduction in dilapidations liability. Thing is, their actual operations will be covered by commercial confidentiality- they give a figure of £600 million saved by their clients, but there won't be a breakdown of that figure into where the savings were made. (Hope that makes sense!). Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 16:00, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Striking that out- found some case studies. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 16:04, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks that would be most helpful. I went to add the citation, but the page has now been deleted. I still have a version in my drafts. Should I edit that one? Sirdreamer (talk) 16:47, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Another potential link here - http://www.housewareslive.net/cvs-secures-business-rates-reduction-for-procook Sirdreamer (talk) 17:03, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

That link is a bit too promotional ("ProCook accountant Tom Owen said: "We pride ourselves on providing the best possible priced products to our customers. That's why we instructed CVS to see if they could reduce our rates bills, to ensure our customers would not suffer with inflated pricing.") It's also unclear- the article says that CVS was instructed by ProCook to reduce rates across their chain of 32 shops, but the assessor only studied one shop. CVS reduced the rates bill by £30,000 per year; at a guess that's across the whole chain. ProCook's turnover is about £12 million a year- so if they pass that saving on to their customers, they can drop their prices by 0.25%. Hmmm… Also curious is that ProCook's turnover equates to £375,000 per shop. A local charity bookshop near to me has a turnover in excess of £100,000- sell your shares in ProCook now Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 08:12, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for the feedback. I can't thank you enough for all your help. I added in the bighospitality link to the drafts - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Commercial_Valuers_and_Surveyors. Should I resubmit now? Will you do the review? Thanks Sirdreamer (talk) 09:57, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

I'll have a look later- about eleven hours from now (got to go somewhere). Looks good. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 10:15, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ha, please don't rush home to review my wikipedia! Thanks again for your help. Sirdreamer (talk) 10:32, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
If CVS' workload is mostly appealing against Valuation Office Agency assessments, it'll be worth putting that in. The BigHospitality page states that successful appeals can give companies a rebate on their rates for up to five years; thus there's a time limit. Unfortunately the VOA page doesn't seem to have much on business rates. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 07:45, 12 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks again for your advice. I have added the info regarding the VOA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Commercial_Valuers_and_Surveyors. Do you think I should resubmit? Thanks Sirdreamer (talk) 14:50, 12 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Done! Many thanks Sirdreamer (talk) 09:34, 13 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, sorry to bother you. Just wondering if you feel the page is suitable and ready for resubmission? Thanks Sirdreamer (talk) 15:50, 16 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, no problem! I've been going through the references, and the Bristol Post one was written by CVS_Surveyors (which presumably is CVS) and reads like an advert. According to the Telegraph article, This 'secret' and 'scandalous' business rates shake-up will cost small firms millions, appeals made in April 2015 and after are only backdated to April 2015. Mark Rigby's quoted as saying that there were 206,000 properties whose rates had not been appealed, with the possibility of £1.72 billion in refunds being lost due to the change. I don't know whether that deadline came into force- it must have affected CVS' business. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 16:44, 16 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for having a look over and improving some of the sources. I imagine the Bristol Post allowed CVS to upload the article, or maybe they did it like a guest blog and that's why 'CVS Surveyors' is the author. I have found this link which is better: http://www.egi.co.uk/news/eg-awards-2014-the-winners/. I can't find any links (apart from CVS owned) which illustrates CVS' client base to go with the Aston Martin reference. I'm not sure about the deadline, I think it did come into force. Any more thoughts? I will make the above amends. Sirdreamer (talk) 17:02, 17 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, as per above. I have amended the sources with two new ones which are completely independent. I have also taken out the reference to Aston Martin as I can't find anything online. Thanks for your help. Any further thoughts before resubmission? Sirdreamer (talk) 11:50, 18 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, sorry for the tardy reply. As far as I remember, the article was declined on the grounds that CVS wasn't notable. Now I think they are notable- their business is based on a defective UK business rating system and they appear to be the most prominent of the firms working in this area. You could submit the article- if it gets declined I'll have a go at adding to it to try and make the case for notability. I'm a bit busy with RL at the moment (it reduces my "thinking capacity"!). Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 12:03, 18 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Don't worry, you have been more than helpful. I really can't thank you enough. I will resubmit before the end of the day. Sirdreamer (talk) 15:21, 18 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Just to add to the above. When I went to resubmit the page, wikipedia asked me to contact the person who initially declined my submission, which I have done here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Waggers Sirdreamer (talk) 17:11, 18 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion declined: Penchal reddy

edit

Hello Xanthomelanoussprog, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Penchal reddy, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not blatantly vandalism or a hoax. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. -- GB fan 15:24, 13 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Then Prod or AFD is the way to go. Or you retag it with more of an explanation either in a |reason= parameter in the CSD tag or on the talk page. I will let another admin evaluate it if this is the path you want to take. -- GB fan 15:56, 13 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

It's been recreated, and GB fan seems determined to let it stand. Personally I think crap like that could be construed as "damaging to the encyclopedia". Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 13:46, 21 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
You are wrong. I do not believe the article should stand. This time you tagged it with WP:G4 and that only applies when it is deleted after a deletion discussion. As the deletion log clearly states, 12:40, 14 December 2015 RHaworth (talk | contribs | block) deleted page Penchal Reddy (Multiple reasons: speedy deletion criteria A7, G11) (view/restore), it was speedy deleted, so G4 does not apply. If the AFD, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Penchal Reddy, was allowed to run and it was deleted then we could use that. I wish that AFD had been allowed to run so this would be a done deal. -- GB fan 13:50, 21 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
To answer your question about the A7 tag, I am not saying that the A7 tag did not apply. I have commented that I did not believe it was a blatant hoax the first time you tagged it and I commented this time that it is not a recreation of an article previously deleted after a discussion. I also commented that I would like to have seen the deletion discussion go a little bit longer and have it deleted per the outcome of the discussion so that we don't have to worry about anything other than using G4. -- GB fan 20:14, 21 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
On a cursory first reading the facts given in the article appeared to be implausible hence I tagged it as a hoax rather than promotion. There seems to be evidence that Reddy does exist and that he does run a business- however the article seems to me to be intended to give credence to certain untruths, and was possibly more damaging than the normal promotional article. What your actions did was to delay the deletion of the article- I tried to tag the second creation with A7 after you removed my tag but the Wiki software prevented it from being tagged- how the other editor managed to tag it I don't know. Christian Goller

edit

Hi. Since you wrote the article about Christian Goller, i'd like to bring to your attention, that Goller is suspect of another Cranach art forgery, that has been reported by the press during the last 14 days. The Venus, dated 1531, from the collection of Prince Hans Adam II. of Liechtenstein, who bought it from Colnaghi for EUR 7 mio. in 2013, and that has been seized by the french police at the beginning or march, might also have been painted by Goller. There is quite a couple of press articles, mostly in french. The latest article i could find has been published in autrian newspaper Der Standard yesterday and is in german: [8]. Maybe you might like to update the article about Goller? 2003:6A:6D19:88E6:3D24:ABA2:49FA:AB1B (talk) 10:18, 20 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Bed now, then work, then if no one else has done it, I'll write em up. (BTW I am informed there is demand for dashboard/cube doll versions.) Yngvadottir (talk) 19:45, 19 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
May not have been a copyright issue- this article suggests that it wasn't, but got interpreted as such. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 20:40, 19 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Tunberg article / Veteran's memorial / Perspective of jurors

edit

Hi. Thanks for your edits and explaining the controversy surrounding the memorial. It really adds to the article. You mentioned what Reed thought of the memorial, but not what jurors Woods Davy or Thomas Rhoads thought. They're two respected people in the art world and look at art from a different perspective than the layman. Thank you.Cstwct (talk) 18:38, 29 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of User:Xanthomelanoussprog/Murray Fredericks

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on User:Xanthomelanoussprog/Murray Fredericks, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Private Passions

I'm looking at this thinking, do we do this? Then again, I suppose it's not much different from our exhaustive coverage of South Park... Drmies (talk) 01:35, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • The programme's a "highbrow" counterpart to Desert Island Discs- Berkeley plays the whole of the piece of music instead of the excerpts used on DID, and refers to the guest several times by their full name, to make sure you know who he's talking to (usually some cultural worker I've never heard of). Desert Island Discs has similar listings, broken down into several separate articles by year. The earlier version of the article (before Fundamentalbase added details) refers to a listing given in a book about the series, which is (I suppose) where the first version of the table was derived from. I don't know where Fundamentalbase got their information from- I can think of three sources e.g. the BBC, Michael Berkeley or a private enthusiast. "That which is not physics is stamp collecting" (Ernest Rutherford). I think that the coverage is useful, but the mentions of performers could be removed since for the most part it's Berkeley who chooses the version of a piece. I hope this reply makes sense, as it's 4 a.m here. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 02:42, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Bror Utter form of name

edit

I'm part of a museum group working on Fort Worth artists, and I'm wondering if we could shorten "Bror Alexander Utter" to "Bror Utter," the form of name he is mostly known under. I am poised to make a significant expansion of the article and wanted to get this matter settled. Thank you.

If you're thinking of renaming the article, then it's probably best not to- a search for "Bror Utter" gives a link to the article anyway. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 09:46, 6 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Clumber Park Walled Garden by Alexander Brownlie Docharty.jpg.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the image description page states the source and copyright status of the derivative work, it only names the creator of the original work without specifying the status of their copyright over the work.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the original image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Thanks again for your cooperation. Felix QW (talk) 20:25, 16 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
