Background of the Ru-Sib Wiki Escapades

Dear Amir, I note that in the debate over the deletion of the "Sibirskii Govor" encyclopedia, ostensibly driven by your worldly and humanistic interest in the preservation of languages, you have defended the motives of the perpetrators of some rather offensive, off-color material that so deeply pervades the whole nature of the insulting hoax (though this may be a mistaken implication given your enthusiasm for the project itself). I thought you might care to read some of the interesting remarks in the 12:27 am Dec 31st posting in the headquarters of the "Siberian language" movement -- ie, Yaroslav Zolotaryov's livejournal. Here's the link: http://samir74.livejournal.com/

Certainly some odd speech coming from such high-minded promoters of a minority's rights. 209.244.43.57 05:57, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

There's nothing special about that entry.
Стеб is a word that is being used more and more in Russian and i noticed that its acceptance in literary language is rising.
The word жид doesn't offend me at all. From etymological point of view it is the Russian pronunciation of יהודי. There are bad people that try to use it to express their hate for Jews. I believe that Samir is not one of them.
And if you're talking about the implication that Jews conspired to kill Saddam, then come on, get a sense of humor. To be fair - i agree that Samir should also improve his own sense of humor if he wants to convince people that his linguistic work is serious. But i won't form my opinion about this fun linguistic project on a joke in a blog. "Siberian language" project is more than a blog.
By the way, who are you, anonymous editor who writes in very good English? --Amir E. Aharoni 11:30, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, his sense of humor, if we can call it that, does leave much to be desired. I find little humor at all given the context of the journal -- Samir's blog buddies (particularly) sure have a fascination with swastikas and Jew-bashing. I appreciate your compliment regarding my English, although it's not much to boast about, as I am an American (of Jewish background, born in Belarus; I do find your interest in it highly commendable!) 63.215.27.199 21:29, 1 January 2007 (UTC) (this is me again)

OK, their interest in Nazism is somewhat weird, but they all know that i'm Jewish and none of them offended me in any way.
I always said that the quality of Zolotaryov and co.'s linguistic work could be better, as well as their jokes, but i nevertheless respect it, because nobody else is doing it.
Thanks for the compliment about Belarus.
It would be nice if you would open an account. --Amir E. Aharoni 06:27, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

--Amir E. Aharoni 08:28, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Popov

No, I haven't missed it. I'll take a look at it later today, I promise. Sorry for not acknowledging your inquiry earlier. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:47, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. --Amir E. Aharoni 14:48, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
OK, done. I did it the right way, however :) Since we are supposed to always disambiguate by patronymic (occupations can be used when the patronymic is unknown, or in addition to patronymic when there is more than one person called FN+P+LN), I moved the composer to Gavriil Nikolayevich Popov and the politician—to Gavriil Kharitonovich Popov. I then pointed both Gavril Popov and Gavriil Popov to the Popov disambiguation page (it wouldn't make sense to create a separate dab page for "Gavriil Popov" as there would only be two entries). I also straightened out the backlinks. Hopefully, I didn't miss anything. Thanks for spotting this, and let me know if I can be of similar assistance in future!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:59, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

3 Rockfourths or 4?

Hi Amir,

I figured we could negotiate over this instead of getting into an edit war. Maybe you know something that I don't, but as far as I can tell, Yaki Gani is now an official member of Rockfour. On the myspace page, he is listed as a band member, and if you look in the booklet for Memories of the Never Happened, he is listed along with the other members of the band, not under 'guest appearances'. Also, if you look at this interview: http://www.skplus.co.il/talk/Talk160507.html , Yaki's name is signed at the bottom along with the other three. Finally, I think the fact that they've stuck with the name 'Rockfour' gives at least a strong presumption that they are not a three-piece.

paka and lehishtame'a, Rotem

[forgot to sign] Nigel Napalm 19:06, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

One of my friends is a close friend of Issar and he said that they are very firm on remaining a three-piece.
But i won't go to a dirty edit war because of that :)
Let me please check my copy of the booklet - IIRC Yaki is listed as a guest, but i might be wrong.
Also, they are three in the gigs posters and they are a three-piece on the stage in the Goes Around video (i saw it once on Music 24, it's pretty nice). On the other hand, i have no idea how does Yaki look like :) --Amir E. Aharoni 08:36, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I am not in their elect social circle, but I am aware of the other evidence. My guess is that they are presenting themselves as a three-piece for the Israeli market, where the original three are known and loved, etc., but they are officially a four-piece for the international market, because of the absurdity of having a power trio named 'Rockfour'. What ultimately settles it for me is the mySpace page, where Yaki is listed as a band member- and there's a picture! Because the 'intended audience' for the wiki page is people who don't know about the band, I suggest we leave Yaki in, which is less confusing, unless someone finds a quote from an interview or some such thing which definitely states that they are a three-piece.
I liked that video, too. Are there other good Israeli music videos from recent years? I'm limited here by what I find on google video. Fortisakharof's last one was great also (though not so much the rest of the album).
Nigel Napalm 15:33, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
The closest i ever got to Rockfour's "elect social circle" is spilling a glass of wine on Issar's girlfriend (unintentionally).
What you are saying is actually interesting - if they are marketed differently in Israel and abroad, then it's valuable info for an encyclopedia. You are welcome to add it, but only if you can describe it well and without original research.
As for the the booklet, then it is indeed cleverly worded - Baruch, Marc, Issar with Yaki and then a list of guest appearances.
I don't know much about latest music videos, Israeli or international, 'cuz i don't have a TV at home, and for the most part i don't miss it :) I've seen Goes Around at someone else's house. The last video that i really liked was There There in 2003. Oh, and Efrat Ben Zur released a great video from her latest album (although unfortunately it was not for the song on which Rockfour played).
Maybe without a TV i miss a lot of good stuff, but i also regain a lot of time to do more interesting things. --Amir E. Aharoni 20:26, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, that Ben Zur video was great. Funny that no one bothers to make the Ben/Bat distinction with last names anymore.
I agree with your edits. You should change it on hebrew wiki as well- my computer doesn't have hebrew support (and I think I've forgotten how to spell!).
My guess about the marketing is definitely original research- actually, from what I can gather, their story of trying and (to a certain degree) succeeding to get marketed in the states has some interesting bits to it, but they have not been very forthcoming. For example, their first proper american release was the compilation Another Beginning, which has a pretty lame track-listing compared to the two english albums which came before it (no "Forest Woods" for god's sake!). Why? Also, their first english release was an ep in the late 90s, which has since been buried in every version of their biography- so all the sources in order to put it on the wiki page are gone. I am guessing that there was some drama with the american label (Rainbow Quartz), which they have since left, and obviously something big happened with LuLai which they're carefully talking around. And why is that Dungen, who do a much weirder and not quite as good version of the Supermarket-era sound- in Swedish!- are so much more successful? Divestment from israeli rock? Maybe someone will write an interesting book about it in ten years, when egos are no longer at stake, "Rockfour: Politics of Pop".
Nigel Napalm 04:46, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
What EP are you talking about? I heard about an unreleased record that had English versions of Haish Sheraa Hakol classics and a bunch of English songs that ended up on Supermarket, OFD and FFO (IIRC, Funny Paper and One Side of an Egg were there). I think that it wasn't released because of a copyright conflict with Danny Recht, which may explain the separate publishing comment about "To the End" and the line "rights are still reserved" in that song, which is really Sof Haderech with different lyrics. But these are just wild guesses.
Or do you talk about something else? I have all the CD singles from Supermarket and OFD. One of them (Wild Animals?) had a bunch of great covers (Eight Miles High), but all of them were re-released on FFO. --Amir E. Aharoni 14:14, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Several years ago I read in an interview (which has since disappeared) that they released (or at least prepared) an english ep before the live record, but that they were later embarrassed by the quality of the singing because of LuLai's inexperience with english. It is mentioned, poorly, in this very poorly written article: http://www.pitch.com/2002-06-20/music/rockfour-peace/ . I would guess that "One Side of An Egg" is from this record, as it sounds most like the Barrett-heavy new material from the live disc, and the english is kind of crazy.
It is also true that they re-recorded all of Ha'ish in english, but didn't release it because of copyright issues with their label. I guess that this has something to do with Recht, now that you bring it up. That is from this interview: http://www.airwavesback.com/gouge/features/interviews/rockfour.html . The problem with all these facts is that they are confusing without some of the connecting details. For example, are these two records related or even the same? As I say, maybe someday a book.
Nigel Napalm 20:52, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Hey, in case you are still following this minor matter, I have changed it back to Yaki being a full member of the band, because since we had this debate, they have given a dozen interviews in which he is described as a member.Nigel Napalm 17:23, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi! Can you translate this article to Hebraish Wikipedia? It's very personal place for me. Please. Poznaniak1975 20:37, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi,
I'd gladly translate it for you, but this article is very short and the policies in the Hebrew Wikipedia are pretty strict about short stubs. Can you at least add how many people live there with link to a source?
Also, did Jews ever live there? It will make the article relevant for the Hebrew Wikipedia, even if the village is very short. --Amir E. Aharoni 11:34, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

In a recent edit to the page International Police Association, you changed one or more words from one international variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For subjects exclusively related to Britain (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. If it is an international topic, use the same form of English the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to the other, even if you don't normally use the version the article is written in. Respect other people's versions of English. They in turn should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. If you have any queries about all this, just ask anyone on Wikipedia and they will help you. Thank you. -- Whpq 12:47, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

No problem,
But next time you just revert an article because of that, check that there weren't any other changes that the editor made.
Also, please add headings when you write on talk pages. Thanks. --Amir E. Aharoni 13:10, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

I suppose that it falls under WP:SELF - meta is a sister project.

please help

hi i'm new. i became aware of an energy drink called Verve and attempted to post it to a wikipedia page called List of Energy Drinks - it was missing from the list of drinks like coffee, Red Bull and Monster.

i was able to post information List of Energy Drinks. i noticed the other beverages were 'active' links to additional pages in wikipedia so i attempted to make a new page about Verve.

there doesnt seem to be a problem with the entry of Vemma Verve! on the List of Energy Drinks page...except that I will go in later and remove the exclamation point.

several problems have begun and i am simply trying to make a valid entry. it is not my intention to market or deceive or spam this encyclopedia. i think it is valid information that an energy drink exists.

please help if you can. problem 1. the title was vemma verve! energy drink. that got editted by somebody to vemma verve! actually that isnt good because it doesnt appear that the ! exclamation point is valuable in searching and the title should not have that.

problem 2. the vemma verve! was tagged by one kind member who asked me to look at new user guidelines. he withdrew his concerning post/request for deletion and i was thankful for his guidance.

a second member has now tagged the entry Vemma Verve! with notability and

source.

i added source but it may be insufficient because i didnt 'tag' the location of text in reference to the source links below. Also I didnt add the section Source, i have external links. wow! could it be that simple of an error...the title of a section. hmmm?

so i've been reading about notability. the trouble is that it just went on the market this month. its new. that doesnt disqualify its existance but it limits the 'discussions' that are online.

how do i post information on a new product without having the source or content be from marketers? there is not an FDA report on this product and I was unable to locate lab or test results online. It may be premature or even unavailable.

problem 3 Regarding sources... just for giggles, i searched a top engine and got more than 1000 responses.... i dont know the validity of these sites. i know a few sites are legitamite. the manufacturer owns them. i listed those sources in the entry. How do i post a reference tag in the document body - would that satisfy the show source concerns?

my full intention is humbly comply and provide meaningful and valuable information to a community. i have a great deal of respect for both members who are commenting on my site. I have to admit, i am used to a more congenial method of contact, discuss and understanding but i am a responsible poster and would like to do a good job here. perhaps i should have asked for your help BEFORE posting the NEW page.

thanks for any help you could provide. i am a very willing student and would even value your editorial comments or contribution. cheers

Living people

Hi -- I note you've created a couple of articles about living people without tagging them as living. It's not obligatory, but it is important, per WP:BLP, because it widens the pool of people who patrol the page for contentious or even libellous additions. You can tag an article by adding either {{Blp}} or the WikiProject Biography {{WPBiography}} template with the "living=yes" parameter to the talk page. In general, I am against fancy signatures, but you are free to make one for yourself, if you want it. I suggest that you take a few minutes to read this: Wikipedia:Signatures.
If you like the design of some user's signature, you can usually look at it's source. Just click 'edit' and see how he/she wrote it. --Amir E. Aharoni 13:39, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

I would like to be adopted, if possible. I am new here, and would love to make my way up as an editor. I have done some edits already, and have one page under my belt. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Parser bird ptic.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Parser bird ptic.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 14:42, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Russia FAC

Could you tell me what you think of the Russia FA Candidature?

Could you tell me if it's alright to ask people what they think about a candidature - I know you posted in June in Talk:Russia - and you are the only one I'm asking.

What exactly does being adopted entail?

You speak a lot of languages with different writing systems, wow!--Dwarf Kirlston 21:33, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Adopted - it means whatever you want it to mean :)
Basically, it means that i welcome new users and that they can count on me to help in their efforts to get used to reading and editing Wikipedia.
Russia FA - i'll take a look. I think that it's OK to ask users about a candidature as long as they have something to do with the issue in question. Asking me about Russia is OK, because i was born there, i speak Russian and i often edit articles related to Russia and USSR.
I speak a lot of languages? Thanks for the compliment ... i'm just curious. Besides, once you know Spanish, it isn't much effort to learn Latin, Italian, Catalan, French, etc. (At least to read them; Speaking is harder.) --Amir E. Aharoni 22:23, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Thankyou. I appreciate it. It would be nice to have someone I could count on. --Dwarf Kirlston 02:48, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

REM and Dres[s] code

I worked on REM disambiguating the links. Most of them intended to R.E.M. (band).

I requested a move for "Social aspects of clothing" to "Dress code" but it's my first time. Could you tell me if I am doing it right? thankyou--Keerllston 14:05, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

R.E.M. disambig - way to go. I've done some of them a long time ago, but many links were added since then.
Dress code renaming proposal - you are doing it correctly. You may consider adding the {{move}} template. Notice, however, that you are not the first user that proposes this - it looks like it was already discussed on the talk page of Social aspects of clothing. I don't think that i'm qualified to express my opinion on the subject, as i hardly understand the social aspects of jeans and t-shirt :). In any case, after you read the previous discussions, feel free to be bold and do whatever seems right to you. --Amir E. Aharoni 15:07, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Soviet Russia

I have gotten myself involved in a bit of an edit war with User:Mikkalai over Soviet Russia (disambiguation) In particular whether Soviet Russia should redirect directly to Russian SFSR. Could you help me out? should I request mediation?--Keerllston 18:31, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Don't get into edit wars, especially not with User:Mikkalai :)
Seriously, there's the "three-revert rule" - 3RR. That's the policy; however, you'll do a favor to yourself if you'll adopt the 1-revert rule - in any case of the slightest argument go straight to the talk page and don't edit the article.
I'll check out this case. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:01, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
We reached a compromise on the inclusion of Russian Reversal in Soviet Russia disambiguation, but as you can see from edit history of Soviet Russia not on that. I thought I and Mikkalai had reched consensus that it should lead to Soviet Russia (disambiguation) but he changed his mind I am aware of the 3RR and have Reverted twice.--Keerllston 19:25, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
I tend to agree with Mikka here. I don't think that it is possible to decide what is the "prevailing" meaning of "Soviet Russia", but it is not so important, because the {{redirect}} template ("Soviet Russia" redirects here. etc.) helps the reader to find what he needs. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 20:13, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm... I actually had not reverted twice in one day but rather not even once. I thought the 3 Reverts were for the entire history, rather than for a day, I have done my IRR with a note to explain on the talk page
I believe that "Soviet Russia" is similar to the term "Bolshevist Russia" which does not redirect to RSFSR Given this, I
I am considering working towards an article on the term "Soviet Russia" on par with this consideration. What do you think?--Keerllston 20:57, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

How do you become an administrator? Is it worth it?  Idontknow610  (WANNA TALK??) 6 December 2007 —Preceding comment was added at 16:10, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Take a look at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. To become an administrator you should be an experienced editor. There is no defined rule on how experienced you need to be, but the general rule of thumb is that you should be an editor for at least few months and you need to have at least a few thousands of edits in main (article) space (editing user pages and talk pages usually doesn't count). Also, you will need to prove that you have practical experience with advanced Wikipedia procedures, such as deleting pages, finding and warning vandals, merging pages etc.
An administrator is not very different from a regular user. Everyone can create new pages and edit existing pages (except a few protected pages, which are very rare). An administrator can delete a whole page and undelete it, and also block and unblock users (this is usually done when they vandalize pages.) If you are not an administrator, but you think that a page should be deleted, use the procedure at WP:AFD (it's a bit complicated, so feel free to ask me about it.) If you think that someone is vandalizing pages and you want to report him, read the instructions at WP:AIV.
After you have experience with all these things and you think that you can perform these things yourself, you can nominate yourself for adminship at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. If you will become a good editor, someone may notice you and offer you to become an admin.
Is it worth it? I am an admin myself; I use the special permissions sometimes, but i am not a "full-time" admin - i like writing articles more :) When you are an advanced user, having the permissions is nice, because it sometimes allows you to be more effective, but you can certainly live without it in the first few months. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:09, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Pan American Christian Academy

This article in Wikipedia Pan American Christian Academy is written like an employee wrote it, for it uses words like "our" and it brags about itself. Should I correct it?--Idontknow610 19:53, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Of course you should correct it. Well spotted! --Amir E. Aharoni 21:11, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

How does it look now? Does it need some more changes, or is it OK?--Idontknow610 21:47, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Your edits were good. I improved it a little more and changed the {{POV}}} template to {{Primarysources}}, which describes the problem with the article more accurately.

WikiProject

Hey, can you explain to me whats a WikiProject and how you become a member of it?  Idontknow610  (WANNA TALK??) 19:11, 6 of December 2007 (UTC)

Start at Wikipedia:WikiProject.
A WikiProject is a loose group of wikipedians that coordinate their efforts about writing articles on a certain topic. They may have a list of articles that need to be written, they may have proposed style guides and standards for writing about a topic, they sort articles on that topic according to their quality so weaker articles can be improved etc.
You don't have to be a member of a project to write about that topic, but if you are a member, it may give you ideas on where to go next.
To become a member of the project you usually add your name to the list of members on the project's page, but remember that the important part of being in a project is writing articles. Having your name listed is secondary. --Amir E. Aharoni 08:24, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Adoption - Murpheous

Hello Amir, would you be willing to take on another adoption? I'm interested in copy editing, verifying content, and adding new content. I consider myself a very quick learner, especially when it comes to technical matters. I don't need much instruction on how to do things (e.g., linking to other articles or inserting templates), but rather when to do them. Much of what I want to do seems to be similar to many of the edits I've seen in your contributions page. I am a full-time non-traditional student, so I don't have an abundance of time, but I would like to contribute whenever possible. Thank you for your time. Murpheous (talk) 18:34, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

I'll gladly adopt you.
The first thing that you should know: The best way to start a new conversation on a talk page is to press the little '+' at the top of the page (between "edit this page" and "history"). This way it's easy to insert a new heading.
So, do you have any particular questions? If you're looking for some routine Wikipedia work, the best place to start is the Wikipedia backlog. If you want to know when to do any of the things listed there, then the answer is "do it right now" :)
If you don't find anything interesting to do there, feel free to ask me for more ideas. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:36, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Colon in the Swedish language

An editor is wondering how important it is to include info about the colon in the Swedish language article, and "What person who does not read Swedish will need to consider the use of the colon in Swedish?"[2] Since you initiated this topic in the talk page, would you mind responding to the questions? Thanks! –panda (talk) 21:36, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Why does it matter that i only deal with Kamer? I was the one who opened the article and wrote more than 90% of what is it today. Kamer exhibited in the biennial like other artists. Category:Paeoniaceae

Hi Amire - at the time (over a year and a half ago) there were not enough articles to justify a separate category for it (and there still aren't really, either; only 61 subcats+pages). There are still only 7 Paeoniaceae-related articles, which isn't enough to justify their own category, it would only make finding them and checking 'Related changes' more tedious. When Category:Saxifragales gets close to being too large (200 subcats+pages), then Category:Paeoniaceae can be re-made to split Category:Saxifragales up into more manageable categories. - MPF (talk) 16:09, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

No need to apologize, you don't have to be too professional on talk pages.
Feel free to ask me for any help. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 05:41, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! Really greatful. One first question: I see on several homepages, people have little boxes that say "This user is from England", etc. How can I get some on mine? Shapiros10 (talk) 12:03, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

In general, to see how any user did anything at his userpage, you can simply read the code of that user page.
Those little boxes are called "userboxes". For general information about userboxes see Wikipedia:Userboxes.
For userboxes related to location see Wikipedia:Userboxes/Location.
If you have any question about these pages, ask me.
A little tip: Take a few minutes to read Wikipedia:Userboxes and be sure to use the design tips there. Many newcomers to Wikipedia tend to put a lot of userboxes on their user page, which is OK, but only as long as they are in good order. Of course, you can put pretty much anything you want on your user page, but order in you user boxes will help you make a good impression. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:55, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Seems interesting, but how do I write it in HTML?Shapiros10 (talk) 22:13, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

You don't need to write it in HTML. When you see something written in curly braces {{like this}}, this is a template. The template does all the HTML work for you. So, for example, try putting this on your user page: {{user United Kingdom}}. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 22:24, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Ah! Didn't know about the template thing. I'm american, so i don't think I'll put a UK Userbox. Shapiros10 (talk) 00:23, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi,
I'll gladly adopt you.
Feel free to ask me anything. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:37, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Oh Thank-you, I will Gladly accept your offer for adoption. Oh, Thank You so much. Do I have to Change my user Page now? That Bit where it says I'm asking for adoption? Thank you Ever So Much Listsvery (talk) 13:45, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, you should probably remove that, unless you're not happy with me and want more people to adopt you :) --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:21, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello, I did it and changed it to a ' This user has been adopted by Amire80' box. I have just created a page, can you check it out for me and see if it's ok. it is called 'Electric Gardens' I don't know how to make a direct link to it. Listsvery (talk) 14:51, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Your page looks OK. It's great that you added sources!
To make a link to an existing page, put its name in double square brackets, like this: [[Electric Gardens]].
You should add every page that you create to a category. If you're not sure to what category you should add the page, try looking for an article that describes something similar. For example, i looked for Glastonbury Festival and found that it's in the Music festivals in England category. You can see the categories to which an article belongs at the bottom of the page. To add a page to a category, just put this at the bottom: [[Category:Music festivals in England]]. Go on, do it now and see what it does. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:16, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Oh, cool, that's for that, it made it into a catagory, thank-you. My new wikipedia friend user:pollyplayhouse has helped me tidy it up and make it look good. But it says that it needs clean up, does that mean that they are going to delete it or change it. i hope they don't, io have put alot of hard work into it and i think that i've made it pretty good, seeng as i have been to the festival twice, I understand it needs a bit more detail, but i can add that at a leter dat. Listsvery (talk) 16:45, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

If someone says that an article needs clean-up, it doesn't mean that it's going to be deleted. The subject seems notable enough to me, and article about notable subjects should be improved and not deleted. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:40, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey. I have made a new page Peggy sue and the pirates could you just glance over it for me and tell me what you think please? Thanks Listsvery (talk) 18:26, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

There might be a problem here. On Wikipedia there are well-defined notability criteria: Wikipedia:Notability (music). Read it now. In short: Usually a band that haven't yet released an album is not considered notable, although there may be exceptions to that rule. If you cannot prove that this band is notable according to the criteria, the article will probably be deleted. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 18:54, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

But they have released singles, I forgot to put them on, you can see now. I have also referenced it, so that you know it is true. Listsvery (talk) 19:13, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

OK, this is better.
There are a couple of other things that you can do to improve it:
  1. Rename it to a title with proper capitalization. Probably it should be "Peggy Sue and the Pirates". To do it just click "move" at the top of the page.
  2. The list of bands that sound like this band looks too long and a little unprofessional. To get some good ideas about writing good Wikipedia articles about music, try reading Wikipedia:WikiProject Music. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:50, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the pointers.

  • I have shortened the long list of bands and made it look a tad more professional, I will try to add internal links to the remaining bands if they have pages about them.
  • But I can't find the 'move' button at the top of the page so that i can capitalise the article name properly. Will you give me more specific instructions please.

Thank-you Listsvery (talk) 20:21, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

The "move" button is supposed to be between history and watch/unwatch. But it is possible that you cannot see it, because you are a brand new user. Can you see it? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 20:30, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

No, i cannot see it. Will you Change the Capitalisation of the title for me please? Thanks Listsvery (talk) 20:34, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank You ever so much! Listsvery (talk) 12:06, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I have decided to make it my goal to deserve and be awarded The Guitarist Barnstar or The music Barnstar. And also, my new friend whom I met on wikipedia, User:Pollypenhouse is being accused of being a sockpuppet. What is a sockpuppet? Thanks Listsvery (talk) 19:19, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Good luck with the barnstars.
See Wikipedia:Sock puppetry. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:34, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I have made a new page: Jose Vanders, can you check it out for me please... Thanks Listsvery (talk) 20:31, 24 December 2007 (UTC) Yay, It's Christmas Tomorrow, Happy Christmas

Wow, nice going with the IPA transcription. You should brush up the spelling and punctuation, though. I recommend using Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer - it helps with spelling (but you'll still have to take care of punctuation yourself.) Get Firefox here: http://www.getfirefox.com/
A list of similar artists from MySpace is not a good idea, though. In general, giving MySpace as a source is frowned upon at Wikipedia. Anyone can set up a MySpace site for himself, so this is not considered a reliable secondary source. For an explanation about "secondary sources", read Wikipedia:No original research.
If you write a lot about indie musicians, be ready to questions about their notability. I supposed that you already read Wikipedia:Notability (music), but study it really well, because people will challenge articles like these. An artist who self-released an EP has borderline notability and it might be a problem. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 21:14, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks very much, But I doubt ill be writing any more articles, I have been accused of being a sockpuppet, what am I to do? I am not, I am not. I am just trying to help people learn about good music. I am not a sock puppet, I just want to help, and be like you... I am sorry, and thank you for your effots in educating me, I guess I'll be blocked in a few days just for being friendsly to that polly girl and whatever other reasons they think i'm a sockpuppet, maybe because I am a fast learner? I don't know! I am now off to argue with User:Whitstable about why he should not have deleated my Peggy Sue and the Pirates page as well as My Jose Vanders page. An adoptee

Just to let you know, I've issued Idontknow610 (talk · contribs) a warning about Wikipedia not being a social network. A vast majority of his edits have been socializing and working in user spaces and there are very few contributions (especially recent ones) to the main spaces. Perhaps you could have a talk with him? Thanks, Metros (talk) 18:08, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Joining a project

Amir; how can I be invited to join a userproject? Do I have to be a user for a certain amount of time? Shapiros10 (talk) 14:56, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

If you refer to a WikiProject, then you don't have to be invited. Simply find a project that interests you and add your name to the list of members. For a list of projects see Wikipedia:WikiProject.
It goes without saying that to create or edit articles about Israel, for example, you don't have to be a member of WikiProject Israel. As i see it, projects are useful for having lists of wikipedians that consider themselves experts on their respective subjects and for organizing task lists. --Amir E. iMedix

Hey Amire80 - I need help with Adding an article to Wikipedia without getting it deleted all the time.

I really need help with using wikipedia.

I want to create an Article for the website I'm part of. Each time I start writing the article, some Bot or person deletes it without me even understanding why.

At first is happened because I wrote the article at an early stage, when the website I wrote about was still closed for only invited users. Now the website is open for the public for a long time. and for some reason it still gets deleted every time I create it.

I'd appreciate you assisting me with guidelines or direct help to create my article.

I don't know how to contact you other than writing on this page. I guess in a few days I'll be checking my own my talk page to see if I got a reply from you there.

Anyways, hope this adopting this works cause I got a little hopeless regarding wikipedia.

Thanks a lot,

Hi,
Actually i'd say that this subject can have an article in Wikipedia, but you need to fix a few things.
As you created it, the article looks too much like advertising. The main rule must be that the article should be more about what others say about iMedix and less about what iMedix says about itself. For example, saying "utilizes advanced proprietary algorithms to provide highly relevant and reliable information" sounds like something that you are saying about your own product to promote it. Such description should be referenced by reliable third-party sources - for example, if your website was reviewed in a reliable journal or website and found to "highly relevant and reliable", then you can write in the article: "Journal X found iMedix to be highly relevant and reliable".
Another thing is references. It's good that you added references at all, but you added too much links. I think that links to Globes, Haaretz and VCCafe are enough to establish notability. Links to blogs, PaidContent and your own press releases are not so good, so you shouldn't add them. See Wikipedia:Citing sources, Wikipedia:External links and Wikipedia:No original research (especially the part about "Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources") for more information about links and references which are proper for Wikipedia.
Good luck. Feel free to ask me more questions, if you run into problems.
One last little thing: When you writing on talk pages on Wikipedia, sign your name by writing --~~~~. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:12, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Adoption - Nayfesj

Hello! I am in need of some help - I am trying to start an information page for a young emerging band from Wales - but my page keeps getting deleted by people. Are you interested in giving me a hand? thank you, nayfesj--Nayfesj (talk) 15:48, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Please read Wikipedia:Notability (music). If the band about which you want to write doesn't fit the notability criteria, then there cannot be an article about it on Wikipedia. When the band will become notable enough according to that page, then you can write an article about it. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:32, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
