Hyelaphus → Axis (genus) – The genus Hyelaphus has not been widely accepted, see references at Indian_hog_deer#Taxonomy -- BhagyaMani (talk) 07:35, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
Below I paste some relevant excerpts from my talk page: BhagyaMani (talk) 08:37, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, I was wondering if you were interested in helping me move the species currently listed under Hyelaphus into Axis, and make a genus page for it? Currently, all the former Hyelaphus species are marked under Axis per the ASM: the Calamian hog deer [1], Bawean deer [2], and Indian hog deer [3]. I was thinking of redirecting Hyelaphus to Axis (genus). Thoughts? 74.68.117.176 (talk) 20:46, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
- Redirecting the page to Axis (genus) is probably not the right choice, but it should be moved. -- BhagyaMani (talk) 06:51, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- What about about making the article about the subgenus (or Axis porcinus Group of GG-2011), at least for now? That would be consistent with Meijaard & Groves (2004), although not Pitra et al (2004) (possibly due to mistaken identity). I assume more recent studies studies support the Chital-Hyelaphus clade and Axis as used by the IUCN and ASM for the four species. However, an article for Axis (genus) is needed and it is probably best to move and expand Hyelaphus so as to keep the page history. This would need an uncontroversial deletion of the redirect. — Jts1882 | talk 08:02, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support, it looks a mess at the moment with Axis being only the Chital article, the Indian hog deer article still placing it in Axis and the Hyelaphus article saying there are 3 species but listing 2 while the Cervinae article lists 4. Is there an official mammal checklist? Something like the IOC list for birds.Quetzal1964 (talk) 10:14, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- The relevant checklist is still Grooves & Grubb (2011), also referred to by the resp. IUCN Red List assessors.[1] -- BhagyaMani (talk) 13:26, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- G&G recognise Axis annamiticus, which the IUCN and ASM don't. I thought there was agreement that the G&G revisions shouldn't be followed on Wikipedia as they aren't elsewhere. — Jts1882 | talk 13:43, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

- Unlike birds the mammals project is a bit in limbo. Formally MSW3 is still the project choice. In practice the IUCN redlist and more recently the ASM-MDD checklist are used, especially when in agreement. In this case all three agree. The proposal for Hyelaphus (in 2004) was probably too late for the MSW3 literature review cutoff, but doesn't seem to have been accepted. It wasn't included in Ungulate Taxonomy (coauthored by one of the proposal authors) and both the IUCN and ASM currently use Axis. The proposed species split also hasn't been adopted by the IUCN or ASM. There is no reason not to follow MSW3 here as the IUCN and ASM use the same. — Jts1882 | talk 13:40, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- The relevant checklist is still Grooves & Grubb (2011), also referred to by the resp. IUCN Red List assessors.[1] -- BhagyaMani (talk) 13:26, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support. For reasons stated above. — Jts1882 | talk 13:40, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support. For all the reason stated above, it is unquestionable. 74.68.117.176 (talk) 17:31, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support for reasons stated above, and also support making "hog deer" the new title of Axis porcinus Geekgecko (talk) 04:21, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
