History

Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons was established under Phat Fashions LLC in 1999 as an extension of the urban menswear brand Phat Farm. Upon being presented a Phat Farm t-shirt made for female consumers, Kimora recalled saying: "I would never wear this. It is very athletic and basic, scaled-down pieces of what a guy would wear." So Simmons stepped up as Baby Phat's designer, creating a collection she would wear: sexy jeans and tops adorned with a curvy cat logo inspired by her pet cat, Max. [1]

Baby Phat’s first show took place in 2000 as an extension of Kimora Lee’s then-husband Russell Simmons’ Phat Farm and overarching Phat Fashions label. Naturally, it drew in the hip-hop community that was so embedded in his label, Def Jam Recordings: not many can boast of having Aaliyah sitting front row, or Lil’ Kim modeling a rhinestone, logo-emblazoned sheer bikini under a faux-fur coat as they make their debuts, but Baby Phat’s legacy was cemented from the very beginning. [2]In 2004, the company expanded to selling a custom Motorola i833 mobile phone sold exclusively at Bloomingdale's. The limited-edition pink, diamond-studded flip-phone was available for $699.99.[3] In the same year, Simmons also created a new shoe line for Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons to include stilettos, wedges, boots, and toddler shoes. Influence

Influence on the fashion industry

Baby Phat's celebrity fans include Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Chrissy Teigen, Kim Kardashian, Christina Millian, Britney Spears, Missy Elliot and Monica (many of whom sat front row during her Fashion Week performances or attended the highly sought-after after parties. [5]

Alek Wek and Devon Aoki modeled, as well as Carmen Kass and Eva Herzigova.[6] Lil' Kim walked the runway. Cam’ron wore all pink in the front row.

Explaining her choice of models on the Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons runway: “It's very deliberate," she says. "It includes people who are sometimes forgotten but are great models - they have fierce walks and bodies, strong girls, but they might sometimes be a size bigger than the other one who was a size 800. They have more 'hip,' more color, more bang to their personality. It's what I represent culturally in society: all colors, all women, all shapes and sizes." [7]
