All or Nothing is the third studio album by British R&B singer Jay Sean and was released on 23 November 2009 in the United States as the singer's American debut album[5] as part of the Super Monday mass album release in the US.[6] The album will be later released in the United Kingdom on 30 November 2009 under Jayded Records and distributed by Island Records.[7]

"Down", featuring label-mate Lil Wayne, was officially released on 30 June 2009 in the U.S. for digital download as the album's lead single. It took the number-one spot on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 at the week date of 17 October 2009. The album's second single, "Do You Remember", has debuted at #27 in the Hot 100.[8].

Background and conception

Jay Sean has been active in the British Asian and Global South Asian markets for six years now, and put out his second studio album, My Own Way, independently in Europe and India in 2008, and has played for crowds over 50,000 while on tour. It quickly brought him to the top of the European R&B charts, sandwiched between names like Ne-Yo and Mariah Carey. His video for the album's first single "Ride It" hit more than 10 million views on YouTube. Eventually, that success caught the attention of Ronald "Slim" Williams, the CEO of Cash Money Records, commenting, "Ten million views and this kid is not in America?" Adding, "For him I think he felt, I want to help this kid, and he needs our engine, that is Cash Money Records to take him to the next level."[9]

On 15 October 2008 at the MOBO Awards, Jay Sean announced that he had signed with the American Hip Hop record label Cash Money Records. He explained "It's always been a dream for me to sign to an American label. And it’s great to be accepted by the best in the game."[10] It was suggested that a remix was produced for his single "Tonight" with Lil Wayne, as Cash Money Records intended to use the song to introduce Jay to the American market. However, when Jay was asked about the remix he answered, "Actually, that was just a rumour. There’s no truth in that unfortunately."[11]

Recording and production

On his first interview in America with MTV IGGY, Sean announced that he was recording five new songs for the album, one of which was his American-debut single with Lil Wayne, titled "Down" and confirmed that the album will be releasing in Summer 2009. However, it is now expected in November 2009, and will have a whole new set of songs and a couple of Cash Money family featurettes. He has discussed a possible collaboration with Akon during the Grammy Awards in 2009, and has recorded a song with Nadine Coyle of Girls Aloud and another with Keisha Buchanan of the Sugababes.[12][13] He is also in the studio with Jive Records recording artist Livvi Franc and label buddy Jared Cotter recording a new song.[14] Kevin Rudolf is also set to make an appearance.[15]

The only confirmed track for the album is "Down" and the rest of the track list is still uncertain.[16] Sean described "Down" as "a fun, very easy track something to pump in your car or be played in the clubs". Another song, "War" is about "battling with anybody, whether it's your girl, family or another country never solved anything, the song is about real life". [17] Jay also said that he has recorded a song with his label mate, Drake, called "If I Ain't Got You", but however Drake haven't featured, who was mean to be the second single, but "Do You Remember" was chosen as the second single.[18]

On 28 October 2009, Jay Sean posted a twitter message referring to a collaboration with a legendary UK artist.[19] Later he confirmed the artist to be Craig David.[20][21]

Release and promotion

Jay Sean released the Deluxe Edition of My Own Way exclusively in the U.K. Initially, the Deluxe Edition was set for release in the U.S., but Cash Money executives insisted that "the album has been out for a while, and on the Internet, so let us make something new for America."[22] The album was tentatively titled "My Own Way (U.S. edition)", but was later confirmed that "the album is called "All or Nothing", and will feature songs with Birdman, Drake, Kevin Rudolf and Lil Wayne".[23] The album was originally confirmed to be released in the end of the Summer 2009, then October and finally was the release date confirmed and will be released on November 23, 2009.

He was invited to perform with Justin Timberlake at "The Justin Timberlake and Friends Concert Benefiting Shriners Hospitals For Children" on 17 October, 2009 where he performed an acoustic version of "Down".[24]

Singles

  • "Down" was chosen as the lead single for the album. It was released to U.S. radio stations on 31 May 2009 and was officially released on iTunes on 30 June 2009. The song debuted at seventy-two on the Billboard Hot 100 before it started to climb the chart. After several weeks of remaining within the top five, "Down" reached number one, overtaking the long run of the Black Eyed Peas' record-setting single, "I Gotta Feeling".[25]

Critical reception

Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian gave the album 3 out of 5 stars, stating, "The only signs of Britishness are the drum'n'bass foundations of If I Ain't Got You and a duet with ex-Sugababe Keisha Buchanan on Far Away – a performance of such weediness that it could only be by two Brits. Interestingly, a collaboration with Craig David, Stuck in the Middle, is much more vigorous. The rest is glossy, super-catchy R&B that should finally establish him in the UK."[31] Neil McCormick of The Telegraph also gave the album 3 out of 5 stars, stating, "You'll find no evidence of his London or Punjabi roots on Jay Sean’s formulaic third album, but his sleekly effective R’n’B pop has made him arguably the most successful British urban artist ever. His single Down topped US charts this year. Sean specialises in structurally concise, melodic, romantic songs delivered in a clear, sweet voice to a gushing, synthetic backdrop. Bland but effective."[32]

David Jeffries of Allmusic gave the album a rating of 3.5 out of 5, stating that "All or Nothing is a strong U.S. debut for this Akon-meets-Chris Brown-styled singer, one that takes advantage of his suave back catalog and the hip new possibilities now possible via Cash Money."[1] DesiHits gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, stating that "Jay Sean's smooth vocals and emotional lyrics make his album a treat for all."[2]
