Dreamwidth is an online journal service based on LiveJournal. It is a code fork of the original service, set up by ex-LiveJournal staff[1] Denise Paolucci and Mark Smith, born out of a desire for a new community based on open access, transparency, freedom and respect[2]. Their diversity statement has been widely praised for its inclusivity[3][4] and one user has been quoted as saying "I think DW will be a better place with all the advantages of LJ but fewer of the disadvantages ... this is a different group of people than what we're dealing with on LJ these days."[5].

Accounts
There are four types of accounts available at Dreamwidth. The most basic is the Free Account, which requires an invite code to be created, muchlike in the early days of LiveJournal. Above this are two kinds of Paid Account; Paid and Premium Paid. They both offer the same features, but Premium Paid offers a higher level. Finally, there is the Seed Account, which is similar to LiveJournal's Permanent Account. Dreamwidth held two Seed Account sales providing a total of 400 Seed Accounts on the launch of open beta to raise money for the first year of operations[8]. It was intended that no more Seed Accounts would be sold, but due to problems with the payment system during the first sale, a third and fourth sale were announced for May 7th/8th 2009[9]. At this time, a further 200 accounts will be sold in total, with 100 going on sale at 9pm EDT on May 7th, and the final 100 going on sale at 9am EDT the following day.
