In August 2004, it was announced Paramount Pictures had acquired The Killer's Game from Intermedia, an action thriller script originated by Rand Ravich and based on Jay Bonansinga's novel of the same name.[1] Prior to being initially acquired by Paramount, directors such as John Woo, Alex Proyas, Renny Harlin and Wolfgang Petersen had considered directing it.[1] Simon Kinberg performed rewrites on Ravich's script.[1] The title Godforsaken was also considered during development.[1]

In December 2015, it was announced Broad Green Pictures was in talks to acquire the rights to The Killer's Game.[2]

It was announced in May 2023 that J. J. Perry was set to direct the film, with Dave Bautista, Ben Kingsley and Sofia Boutella set to star.[3][4] In July, Ice Cube, Pom Klementieff, Scott Adkins, Drew McIntyre and Marko Zaror were among new additions to the cast.[5][6]

Production began in July 2023 in Budapest,[7] having been granted an interim agreement waiver to proceed with filming amid the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[8]
