The Karate Barnstar may be awarded to editors who've made significant contributions to Karate-related articles.

The barnstar will be hosted at Wikipedia:WikiProject Karate. Mountaincirquetalk 15:09, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mountaincirque There is already Template:The Martial Arts Barnstar @WP:TBARN, but since your proposal is to be hosted there (WikiProject Karate) and not here, there is no need to ask here. Jerium (talk) 17:28, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

New barnstar design request: Scripting barnstar

I would like to request someone to create a new barnstar for outstanding user scripting. This is inspired by a wonderful new script that revolutionizes the ability to convert the numeric reference names generated by Visual Editor (like ":0") into meaningful names (like "Lastname-YYYY"). This is a game-changer for fixing such articles, and deserves a barnstar. I looked through the entire list of barnstars, and was very surprised that I couldn't find one aimed at someone who has designed an exceptionally useful new user script, or made major improvements to an existing one. Can someone help?

The tricky part, I guess (I'm not a graphic designer), is figuring out how to get the "scripting" idea into the design. I had a look at icons from this Google image search, I also tried this search at Commons, and the most common motif there, was this sort of scroll-paper idea, with the top and bottom rolled up a bit, like   or  ; or maybe a completely different approach, with something incorporating some lines of code, like a faded version of   ? My understanding is, that user scripts are limited to being writen in javascript, for which a commonly understood abbreviation is "js", but I don't know if that's a hard rule that will never change, so I'm unsure about using 'js' in the design; maybe someone could weigh in on that point. Any ideas for a new scripting barnstar? Mathglot (talk) 21:01, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mathglot I came up with Template:The Scripting Barnstar. Jerium (talk) 23:28, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Jerium, thank you for this. I'm uncertain about the "</>" image. Here's a link to the actual javascript code in that script, just as a sample of the look-and-feel of Javascript (which I'm not familiar with). It doesn't seem to use angle brackets much, or at all, and I wonder if that inset image is a good one to bring "scripting" to mind? I'll try and find a WikiProject or other page where scripters hang out, and ping a few people who might know. What do you think? Mathglot (talk) 23:59, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I like Template:The Scripting Barnstar. </> is immediately recognizable as HTML to anyone that does website programming. Up to you, of course, but I think that one is usable :) –Novem Linguae (talk) 15:41, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Pinging regulars at WP:JAVASCRIPT: @Novem Linguae, Qwerfjkl, Fred Gandt, and Writ Keeper: for your opinions on what might be a good graphic element to add to this proposed barnstar. (The reason for the direct ping instead of leaving a feedback request at the page, is to hopefully keep from inviting User:N****g to his own surprise party  . Also invited Graphics Lab folks.) What kind of graphic do you think would be a good one to add to a star or star-like image, to get across the idea of scripting? If scripting really is just javascript, maybe a "JS" inside one of those curly paper scroll thingies? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 01:26, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yeah the </> would be more appropriate to indicate markup. I've long considered if to be the most important word in high level coding (scripting), as almost everything we do will at some point require some flow control. Curly braces {} and semicolons ; are very codey. How about a good old foo; we code wranglers love us some foo. Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 02:08, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
What about this, then?

if (isFoo) {
   return bar;
}

Might be illegible in the context of a sub-image overlaying a star, but maybe illegibility doesn't matter: it's kind of like Lorem ipsum, it's not there to really be read, just to look right (sort of). Or would a graphic (non-text) element be better? Mathglot (talk) 02:32, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ooooh. User:N.....g. Skillz 😎 How about: {⭐}? Wiki scripting encompases templates, modules and JS predominantly. Braces are common to all three. Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 02:36, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Fred, not a bad idea; still hoping for more feedback from Graphics or Scripting folks to see what other ideas there might be. If we go with your curly idea, how big would you make the curlies? A barnstar is pretty large (see examples at Wikipedia:Barnstars), would you blow the curlies up to full height of the star, or something less? Also, what about the star itself as far as colors, designs, even shapes? Mathglot (talk) 00:57, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Definitely wait for other feedback 👍 Something like: {} ? Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 01:44, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Ex Google+ user? 😉 I was 🤷‍♀️ Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 01:54, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Fred, can you add some brief and very faded js code behind the star, maybe "if Foo { dot dot dot newline something something" to see how that might look? Doesn't matter if it's large enough to be easily legible, and should be faded enough that it doesn't interfere with the image, but just dark enough you can make it out if you stare at it. Mathglot (talk) 01:56, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

This is a ternary conditional statement meaning if ( foo ) { return bar; } else { return baz; }. Any good? You know these aren't images right? Probably easier with GIMP or PS (I was just trying to save the upload)

{
foo ? bar : baz
}

Mathglot What font did you use? Jerium (talk) 11:39, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I believe that was Arial bold. I'm pretty shaky with "Paint", I'll have to go back and try to verify that. Will get back to you. Mathglot (talk) 18:59, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Mathglot I uploaded a new version according how you wanted, had to "eye-ball" your design as best as I could. Jerium (talk) 19:58, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Cool, thanks! Awarded, and now added to the list. Mathglot (talk) 07:24, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I had an idea for an award given to Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians who's contributions have been recognized after their passing for GA's/FA's/DYK's/whatever. A very simple award, but I'd like to think a needed one. I like Astatine (Talk to me) 21:11, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Demt1298 I like it. I wanted to make some adjustments though; make the umbrella bigger, tamper with the color, and add a shadow for a more 3D look and better visibility overall. I also made a version that better correlates with the userbox I created for the task force, but I haven't uploaded it. Jerium (talk) 16:54, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jerium Please make the adjustments to it in commons and then put the new version here. I will appreciate the assistance. Demt1298 (talk) 16:58, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
