Law enforcement in Madeira is, mainly, the responsibility of the national police forces and services of Portugal. In Madeira operate:
- Public Security Police (PSP) Regional Command of Madeira - responsible for urban and rural preventive police;
- Portuguese Republican National Guard (GNR) Territorial Command of Madeira - responsible for customs, border and maritime patrol;
- Polícia Judiciária (PJ) Funchal Criminal Investigation Department - responsible for the criminal investigation;
- Foreign and Border Service (SEF) Regional Direction of Madeira - responsible for imigration control.
There are minor police services dependent of the Regional Government of Madeira like the forest police and the sanitary, food and economical police.
The several police forces in Madeira provide security for the Portuguese archipelago's 797 km² of territory and population of 253,482.[1]
