Formerly, the area of the cities of [[Rikuzentakata, Iwate|Rikusentakata]] and [[Ōfunato, Iwate| Ōfunato]] were within the borders of the district. At{{as present,of|2019|06|01}} the district consists only of the town of [[Sumita, Iwate|Sumita]] with a population ({{as of|2017}}) 5,228 people, with a density of 553415.6 peopleper km² and an area of {{convert|334.84|sqkm|sqmi}}.
