Other Drugs Mentioned: Cannabis (Marijuana)

Cannabis also known as Marijuana, Weed, Grass, Ganja, Pot… etc. Has been recognized by the University of Maryland’s Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) as a stimulant, depressant and hallucinogen because of the different effects it can create in people. Marijuana the drug is usually dried leaves and other parts of the plant that is either inhaled or ingested orally, inhalation of the drug causes those engaging in it to be affected almost immediately with the effects lasting around 3 hours, while ingestion of marijuana usually takes about half hour to 1 hour for it to show its effects and can last for quite a while. According to more than one source Tetrahydrocannabinol better known as THC is a chemical or cannabinoid that is the reason one gets intoxicated when partaking in marijuana it is also stated to be both mind altering and addictive because it mostly puts those who partake in it into a euphoric and relaxed state of mind, while causing those who overdose on it to experience more unpleasant states. The physiological response that marijuana produces are; increased heart rate, increased hunger, in coordination, memory and learning disruption, paranoia and anxiety, problems with thinking, problem solving and judgement.

Marijuana is an illegal drug that is slowly becoming medically and recreationally legalized because of its medicinal properties but it is still illegal in some states and it is not recognized for its medical properties federally, as seen in the case of Gonzales v Raich (2005). New York is one of the states that has legalized marijuana medicinally but with restrictions applying so as not to be confused with others who do not qualify for medical marijuana and are thus willfully breaking the law by possessing any amount of marijuana be it to use or sell.
