Hartmut Jahreiß obtained his Ph.D from the University of Heidelberg. His thesis was on the the spatial distribution, kinetics and age of stars near the Sun.<ref>{{ cite Book | title=Die räumliche Verteilung, Kinematik und Alter der sonnennahen Sterne | author=Jahreiß, H. | work=Diss. Jahreiß is best known for his collaboration with Gliese on the publication of new editions of the Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars in 1979<ref>{{cite journal

Jahreiß remains very active in the cataloging and study of nearby stars, preparing the new Hipparcos catalogs<ref>{{ cite book | title=Hipparcos Input Catalogue, Version 2 (Turon+ 1993) | authors=Turon, C.; Egret, D.; Gomez, A.; Grenon, M.; Jahreiss, H.; Requieme, Y.; Argue, A.
