''Jackdaw'' is a [[metafiction]] account, supposedly by the author (or by another author of the same name), who receives a commission to write a book about the Irish painter [[Francis Bacon (artist)|Francis Bacon]]. During the execution of this challenging commission, Thompson develops a sexual fixation on one of Bacon's models, seeks release in the pursuit of increasingly unusual sexual practices, and has a mental breakdown. Meanwhile, as his family struggles to understand his obsessive and puzzling behaviour, a bizarre flesh sculpture appears in Thompson's basement, reflecting both his own state of mind and his possession by Bacon's influence.
