During the war, Valkenburg was an opportunist. In 1942, she helped Jews find a hiding place in her own house on the Van Ostadestraat for financial compensation. When she was arrested for this in 1943, she started working as a {{ill|Vertrouwensman (Tweede Wereldoorlog)|lt=V-Frau|nl}} for the occupiers. In order to avoid prosecution, she had to report Jews to the notorious {{ill|Bureau Joodsche Zaken|nl}}. It is said that she betrayed several dozen people in this way.
Valkenburg moved to Zuider Amstellaan in 1943 after a fellow collaborator had been executed by the [[Resistance during World War II|resistance]]. When she moved, she met the handyman Joop Bom, who used the alias Gerritsen,{{sfn|Shorto|2013|p=274}} with whom she had a relationship and married on 16 November 1943.{{sfn|van de Water|2022}} The couple worked together betraying Jews for profit.{{sfn|Shorto|2013|pp=273-274}}
After [[Dolle Dinsdag|Mad Tuesday]], Valkenburg fled with her partner to [[Bergen op Zoom]], where her sister lived. The couple was arrested there, after being informed on by her sister, on 31 March 1945 and taken to the Meilust internment camp .
