Matter was a Chicago music magazine founded in late 1982 or early 1983. It published 15 issues, one every two to five months, through June 1986. Each issue had from 20 to 40 pages of content, printed on 8-1/2" x 11" heavy, semi-gloss paper, in black and white. Starting with issue 4, the cover had one additional color, always on the front, sometimes on the back advertisement. The entire publication (not including #1) contained about 950 pieces of editorial content.<ref name=RMA>{{cite web |title=Matter magazine |url=https://rockmagarchive.com/?page_id=128 |website=The Rock Mag Archive |publisher=rockmagarchive.com |access-date=9 May 2024}}</ref><ref name="TP">{{cite journal |last1=Payes |first1=Robert |title=AU Reviews |journal=[[Trouser Press]] |date=June 1983 |volume=10 |issue=4 |page=34 |url=https://trouserpress.com/magazine-covers-9/#read |access-date=9 May 2024}}</ref><ref name=SF>{{cite web |last1=Levine |first1=Evan H. |title=Matter Music Magazine – Volume 1 Number 5 (September 1983) |url=https://swanfungus.com/2008/11/matter-music-magazine-volume-1-number-5-september-1983/ |website=Swan Fungus |access-date=9 May 2024}}</ref>

Originally out of Evanston, IL, the magazine moved to Hoboken, NJ with issue #10, Sep/Oct. 1984. Until the last issue, the magazine dispensed with page numbers, and none had tables of contents. The focus of the magazine was on current Chicago area, Midwestern, North American, and British music and art that was not in the mainstream.<ref name=RMA/><ref name=TP/><ref name=SF/>
