Hoyles began her career as a schoolteacher[[secondary school]] teacher,<ref name=whoswho/> later becoming an academic. In the late 1980s she was co-presenter of ''Fun and Games'', a [[prime time]] television [[quiz show]] about mathematics.<ref name=kav/>
