Powell most likely joined [[Port Vale F.C.|Burslem Port Vale]] in the autumn of 1884.<ref name="kent">{{cite book|last=Kent|first=Jeff|title=Port Vale Personalities|publisher=Witan Books|page=238|year=1996|isbn=0-9529152-0-0|url=http://www.amazon.ca/Port-Vale-Personalities-Jeff-Kent/dp/0952915200}}</ref> His first recorded game was in a 6–1 thumping at [[Blackburn Olympic F.C.|Blackburn Olympic]] on 1 November 1884 in a [[exhibition game|friendly]].<ref name="kent"/> The next year he was a member of the sides that won the Burslem Challenge and shared the North Staffs Charity Challenge cups in 1885.<ref name="kent"/> He was rather callously given the [[nickname]] "Pull-it" after badly disjointing a [[knee]] in a 4–1 defeat at [[Crewe Alexandra F.C.|Crewe Alexandra]] in a Football Combination match on 20 October 1888; the injury was so severe a [[Physician|doctor]] had to be brought onto the [[Football pitch|pitch]] before Powell was carried off.<ref name="kent"/> Once recovered he was mainly used as a [[reserve team]] player and was released from the [[Athletic Ground (Cobridge)|Athletic Ground]] at the end of the [[1892–93 Burslem Port Vale F.C. season|1892–93]] season.<ref name="kent"/>
