For much of its history the street has been lined with warehouses, and in 1861 Scovell's warehouse caught fire, resulting in the largest peacetime fire in the [[Port of London]].<ref>[http://www.portcities.org.uk/london/server/show/conMediaFile.7221/The-Tooley-Street-fire.html The Tooley Street fire. - Historical events - Port Cities<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref>.
