The 2012 election in this constituency attracted media interest as long-serving MP, national political figure and three-time presidential candidate [[François Bayrou]] appeared to be facing unprecedented difficulty. Until 2002, the mainstream right had not stood a candidate against him, and in 2007 the candidate of the [[Union for a Popular Movement]] had withdrawn in his favour in the second round. Any candidate obtaining the votes of at least 12.5% of registered voters could advance to the second round.
