The Wonnangatta River rises below Mount Despair, part of the [[Great Dividing Range]], east of {{VICcity|Mansfield}} in a remote [[state forest]]ryforestry [[Protected areas of Victoria#Reference Areas inside other Protected areas|protected area]], called the Wonnangatta River Reference Area.
