The Wonnangatta River rises below Mount Despair, part of the [[Great Dividing Range]], east of {{VICcity|Mansfield}} in a remote [[state forest]]ryforestry [[Protected areas of Victoria#Reference Areas inside other Protected areas|protected area]], called the Wonnangatta River Reference Area. The river flows generally south by east, in a highly meandering [[watercourse|course]], joined by eleven [[tributary|tributaries]] including the [[Dry River (Victoria)|Dry]], [[Humffray River|Humffray]], [[Moroka River|Moroka]], [[Wongungarra River|Wongungarra]] and [[Dargo River|Dargo]] rivers, before reaching its [[confluence]] with the [[Wentworth River (Victoria)|Wentworth River]] and [[Swamp Creek (Mitchell, East Gippsland, Victoria)|Swamp Creek]] to form the Mitchell River north of the [[Mitchell River National Park (Victoria)|Mitchell River National Park]], in the [[Shire of East Gippsland]].
