overflows
Jan. 26th, 2026 03:33 pmStackoverflow, mathoverflow, and the like.
For years I've been having to fight some idiots, fresh PhDs on math, or fresh grads from some software engineering, disqualifying my questions, giving my answers '-1', and the like - that's in parallel with some very meaningful discussions with very respectable scientists.
But now it seems like most, if not all, idiots are gone. They are not earning points anymore on the website that is not popular anymore. And suddenly some of my questions that were having like '-1' ("is there a category of all categories?" (the obvious answer is "no", but there were a bunch of idiots trying to imposed a set-theoretical view, etc.))
So, I observe a couple of good results:
1) the general educational level of the general public might have improved, thanks to AIs that dominate the opinions;
2) idiots gone, we can talk now.
(And I'm still trying to find an example of a topos not having an underlying boolean topos. It's probably in the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Sketches-Elephant-Theory-Compendium-Oxford/dp/019852496X">Elephant Book</a>.On the current set of politicians leaving the sinking party

Roundup
Jan. 26th, 2026 08:57 pm🏛️ Was on leave from work today to run some errands related to government paperwork. I'm old enough that there wasn't a way to track your social security payments online when I first got my social security number, so I immediately ran into a wall when I attempted to make an online account last year because I didn't have any of the requirements to even set up an account. Fortunately, I got that all sorted this morning.
🌺 TIL that TWINENGINE (the anime's producer) has been uploading weekly chibi Jigokuraku extras! They're pretty short but they do give additional insight into characters' relationships with one another. Ju Fa and Tao Fa seem to be favor one another more than I thought they did, and it was nice seeing Choubei teasing Touma like the gremlin older brother that he is.
🎨 Ended up spending an inordinate amount of time this afternoon/evening fiddling with my layout. Turned all my entry links into rainbows (1) to represent the zone as it's portrayed in Sk8 since I decided to go TadaAi with the layout images and (2) because why not? Implementing the gradient took me long enough, then I had to fix everything I accidentally broke in the process (entry tag colors, crosspost link colors, etc.).
❄️ I think I'm going to give up on trying to catch up with the rest of the
snowflake_challenge days. I wasn't able to keep up with the regular responses because Life Happened and I've lost the drive to go back and answer the prompts for the days I missed.

Snowflake Challenge #13 - communities

Challenge #13
TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.
I don't participate in communities much, I'm mostly a lurker. Lately my preferred lurking space is Reddit. I like the way you follow not people but groups (subreddits), the slightly old-fashioned interface, the convenience of threaded comments, and most of all, the variety, breadth and depth of the content.
There is an active (or relatively active) subreddit for almost any interest, mood or app!
( linkspam )
and that's just a tiny bit of what's out there. (Not all of the listed above are fandom-related, but heck, whatever keeps your creative gears spinning ;)
Also, it's easy to group subreddits into your own themed lists, and browse a specific theme whenever you feel like it. Actually, I mostly just drop to my main page and scroll for a while.
Perhaps Reddit is not a proper "community", as the atmosphere is not always warm and friendly and supportive, and some users are rude and obnoxious, and the interaction is mostly on specific subjects and not with specific people, but I suppose this is my personal usage pattern as a lurker. And TBF, real communities take a lot of time and effort to participate in, and I usually just don't have so much energy in my mental space. (Snowflake Challenge is pushing me in the best way though ;)

Easy come, easy go
Jan. 25th, 2026 09:03 pmOn Thursday, a dead mouse appeared on the ledge outside of my second-story window. How did it get there? I certainly don't know. That mouse was either placed there, poisoned, or diseased: a healthy mouse knows not to hang out on an exposed ledge in subzero conditions. And it wasn't passing by casually, since there's no reason for a mouse to be there, so it was either out of its mind on poison or infection, or something put it there. But what could have left it? A bird of prey? They don't land on the window ledge, it's too flat and not big enough. Nothing goes there, except for the occasional small passerine bird.
Given that it's freezer temperatures outside, I was not going to open the casement to reach toward a corpse in front of the fixed window panel. It can stay there for now.
Yesterday I was looking out into the backyard in advance of today's monster snowfall, and the mouse was gone. Maybe it was stashed...but I can't imagine by what.
Shadowbringers Recap Part 8: The Hills of Amber
Jan. 25th, 2026 06:33 pmThis is incredibly long because I've faithfully transcribed ALL the dialogue that happens during this part of the game (with the exception of a mini-game and some dialogue choices; I only have the answer for one choice, not both. I'll fix that later.) Get a drink and something yummy, then get cozy because you'll be reading a while.

Recap from last time! SPOILERS for Shadowbringers
During our last recap, Vauthry had sicced his sin eaters on Lakeland. The battle was fierce and there were quite a few casualties. The Scions regroup in the Crystarium’s Ocular to discuss future plans, all in agreement not to give up the fight.Alphinaud has had no luck finding the Lightwarden of Kholusia, while Alisaie has heard a few rumors about Amh Araeng’s Lightwarden but dare not investigate on her own. Still, Alisaie’s information is not concrete, leading Minfilia to suggest traveling to Nabaath Araeng to call back the original Minfilia, as her powers would allow the Scions to easily find the remaining Lightwardens.
Thancred is dead set against this course of action, but Minfilia is persistent.
Sensing your concern, Minfilia reaffirms her commitment to her chosen course of action, and asks that you trust her judgment with an earnestness worthy of her namesake. She then departs—presumably to make her preparations before joining Thancred at the gates.
After a short wait, Minfilia arrives at the appointed place and declares her readiness to depart. But before proceeding, you give her one last opportunity to abandon her chosen course. Her emphatic reply leaves little room for argument, however, so the group turns its attention to the question of how best to pass through Amh Araeng unnoticed. At Alisaie’s suggestion, you decide to split up—sending her, Alphinaud, and Y’shtola to the east to distract the Eulmoran Army while the rest of you take the western route to Nabaath Araeng.
As you near the gate to Amh Araeng, you realize you are not the only one contemplating the ordeals that may lie ahead. Hearing Thancred’s quiet plea for assistance in protecting Minfilia, his trepidation could not be more obvious.
You speak with Hardyss, who grants you passage through the gate—perhaps against her better judgment.

*Points to my previous post about how MAGA wants to be able to legally shoot us in the streets.*
Jan. 25th, 2026 04:32 pmThat was what the Epstein files were really all about. MAGA supported Trump in the first place because they thought he would eventually mandate the persecution and murder of all of the people who disagree with them. MAGA assumed the Epstein List or the Black Book or whatever would be full of prominent Democrat and Liberal names, and ONLY that, and that this would finally give them the justification the needed to be able to execute on sight anyone identifying as Democrat or Liberal or Leftist.
But since Their Guy is Suspect #1, they're now actively against the release of the Epstein files. They've pivoted to just letting the ICEstapo carry on with killing people on a whim. The fact that ICE has not been sent to occupy any border states with higher immigration statistics proves that was never about immigration, any more than it was about "saving children from trafficking" because their guy is trafficker and rapist #1. And now the proof is right there in their faces, and now they can't just rationalize it away.
But it's always been about them just wanting to be able to execute us at will just for disagreeing with them about the economy, disagreeing with them about civil rights (i.e. that everyone should have them), for rejecting their cruelty and hypocrisy, for rejecting their racism, rejecting white supremacy, rejecting their warped misappropriation of a 3000-year-old Levantine storm god (which I have, for the gods of pre-Roman Britain and France) and for gently asking them to put on masks during a global pandemic. That's all it has ever been about. That's what all of their bullshit rationalizations about immigration or "saving the children" are about. Always has been.
Rest in power Renee Good and Alex Peretti, and everyone else victimized by these thugs whose names haven't been revealed or aren't being mentioned right now. You never should have been martyrs. We can't let their murderers get away with this.
Current mood.

Jan. 25th, 2026 09:59 pmReading. ( Scalzi, Tufte, Duncan )
Writing. Introduction continues to take shape. Word count hasn't gone up much, but that's partly because I am doing a reasonable job of Whacking Down A Bunch Of Words and then reassessing and deleting...
Listening. More of The Hidden Almanac. I continue to fret about not keeping super great track of it, which is in part because I seem to be extremely prone to going to sleep if it winds up on in the car...
Playing. We are finding an Exploders Inkulinati run alarmingly straightforward. Learning Continues.
Sudoku also continues to eat my brain. :|
Cooking. Dinner tonight included: another attempt at the Roti King cabbage poriyal, this time with more coconut, which I think has worked v well; a... loose attempt at a generous interpretation of Dishoom's gunpowder potatoes (no lime, no spring onion yet, no leaf coriander, not new potatoes...); and some pomegranate molasses-tamarind-yoghurt-chaat masala goop to sit some paneer in.
Earlier in the week I ticked a couple more things off the Cook (Almost) All Of East project (kung pao cauliflower; mushroom bao); this evening I have also had a first stab at recreating the Leon spiced tahini hot chocolate, which was Very Acceptable.
Eating. Finally managed to get a meal at the Viewpoint restaurant at Whipsnade (we keep not going at a time when it's open); mildly disappointed by the sourdough pizza, probably because I have a vague memory of a previous incarnation having aspirations to Fancy Restaurant, which I think the current set-up doesn't. Still v pleasant to eat food I didn't cook sat looking out over the Downs, though.
Exploring. ZOO.
Growing. I do not understand where the sciarid flies keep coming from but I am so, so, so over them. I am SO over them. WHY is the lithops container SUDDENLY FULL OF THEM.
That issue aside: lemongrass continues to have Leafs! If (if!) it keeps going like this I'm going to wind up needing to dispose of a bunch of plants via Freecycle/Freegle, goodness. Physalis still not doing anything visible. Ancho chillis almost but not quite All The Way Ripe.
It is almost certainly time to start sowing More Things but I think perhaps I will hold off until after I've had a chance to apply some nematodes...

Speaking of scifi, we dropped Paramount after the latest season of Strange New Worlds, partly because of CBS's actions, partly because too many subscriptions and we're trying to cut back, partly because Amazing Race was yet another season of known-quantity reality stars instead of reasonably-believable normies. But we did get to watch the first episode of Starfleet Academy because they made it available on YouTube. And yeah, while I agree the preview made it look like "Star Trek: Dawson's Creek," as

Done Since 2026-01-18
Jan. 25th, 2026 02:05 pmSo, while I accomplished a few things -- I'll get to those later -- I'm not going to mark that as my mood because there is so much more that I was supposed to have done, and because of what's going on in Minnesota. (Just 50 miles north of where I went to college, which isn't really relevant but affects my mood nonetheless.)
I only managed three walks, all under a kilometer, but one was a st/roll with N, trying out Roman-the-Roamate. That will lead to a couple of reviews, eventually. I did rather little practicing, but sang a couple of songs during Eurofilk on Thursday, which counts. I also, at long last, retrieved Nova's old mirror drive and installed it. And downloaded a couple of tax forms.
I did more cooking than usual, too, because G was on vacation in Amsterdam. And got mostly-good news from my cardiology appointment -- basically I have a "typical hypertensive heart", but no valve problems or backflow. A little more detail Tuesday.
What didn't get done was, basically, anything that required communication. The main one here is getting Scarlett-the-Carlet serviced. (I did try email and web forms to a couple of promising-looking places, but got negative or no response. I'll have to call.) There's also some writing that needs done, both emails and reviews (see above and here). Also trip planning -- I really ought to get to Seattle in time to renew my driver's license, which expires mid-March.
Ok, links. I do not seem to have any links for the nightmare going on in Minnesota; I probably should archive some of that footage before it goes down the memory hole. But if you're there, or anywhere else where there's an ICE storm, you'll find a lot of useful stuff Friday and Saturday. Friday has whistle info, and Saturday has Melt the Ice hat: r/AntifascistKnitting. There's also a crochet pattern, and some of the history behind it.
Finally, from Saturday, Democrats Successfully Strip All Anti-Trans Riders From Final Appropriations Bills, ‘The powerful have their power. YMI -- ODB: 25 January 2026
Jan. 25th, 2026 07:33 amODB: Be Like Jesus
January 25, 2026
READ: 1 John 3:1-3
We all . . . are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory. 2 Corinthians 3:18
The tall passenger seemed to unfold as he stood up in the aisle of the small regional jet. Then I noticed the title of his boldly displayed book: Be Like Jesus. A few minutes later, I saw that same man push others aside to grab his bag off the waiting trolley. Be like Jesus? I didn’t know if he was truly a “brother” who knew Christ, but I was dismayed by this display of selfishness that misrepresented Jesus.
As my feet hit the escalator, I saw the man again, book cover still visible. The words then elbowed my own heart. Be like Jesus, Elisa. Don’t judge. I wondered, was my presence emanating anything of Jesus?
Becoming like Jesus is a transformational process—a metamorphosis—of God growing His character in us as we yield to His ways. Paul wrote that believers in Jesus “are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18). John marvels at how hard this is for us to understand—much less achieve: “Now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him [in purity], for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2-3).
As the escalator spilled us out, I glanced again at the book. Be Like Jesus—the words took on new meaning for me and redirected my gaze to my own heart and life.
— Elisa Morgan
In what way do you long to be like Jesus? How can you cooperate with His work in your life?
Oh, God, how I want to be like You! Please have Your transformative way in my heart.
